Skidaway Students who were taking advanced biology and others who were interested who had passed first- year biology were eligibile to be chosen to go to Skidaway Island to experiment in marine biology. The study of the ecological nature of the area was made by studying the marshlands. Students learned that everything affecting the ecology of the area centers around the marshlands. If pollution kills the cord grass, then there is nothing to hold the beach, and the land will wash away. Boat traffic in the area is heavy, and most of the pollution turned out to be oil from boats. By studying crab burrows one can learn many details about the area. Each type of crab species has a different burrow and different type of debris in the burrow, so it is possible to determine what type of crab lived in the burrow. Crabs dig to the water line, and it is possible to construct a topographical map of the area by looking at crab burrows. Core samples made from the shoreline to the maritime forest line were also x-rayed and studied to help determine the structure of the marsh and what kind of animals lived in the marsh. 1 ■-
