Individuality DEDICATION We, the 1974 PACESETTER staff, are honored to dedicate the 1974 PACESETTER to Mr. Ralph Newton. After working for years on the staff of the Atlanta newspapers, Mr. Newton came to Pace during its first year. He has aided many students in opening that first door. When Pace was fresh and just starting to grow, Mr. Newton even drove many students to and from school. He has done many things for Pace including maintenance supervision and shopping for both groceries and needed supplies. Truly, Mr. Newton has used his many talents to help keep Pace ' s doors open. Being smaJl but full of doors, Pace opens us to one another through new experiences Enter a door, meet a friend, join an activity, share a quiet moment. At Pace all you need to do is be yourself. FRIENDSHIP Harvest Bazaar Once again the many hours of hard work by the Pace mothers made the Harvest Bazaar a great success. Many people gave plants, toys, and time. Powder Puff Football |n. at r?- r-Β« ,. J J In spite of the rain and the hairy cheerleading on the sidelines, the Super Sophs defeated Marcus Mouchet ' s Maulers. The intramural program should help make f utvire upper school teams almost impossible to beat. Change of Pace Visitors from the Cambell-Stone retirement center in Buckhead helped bridge the generation gap by visiting Pace this spring. With Pace cheerleaders acting as hostesses, guests toured labs and classrooms talk ing with students and teachers about what is happening in schools these days. There were field day events and staged exhibitions of tennis, swimming, and gymnastics. After lunch, music was shared in the gardens. Dickson Brown and his Bluegrass Ensemble played and then the Campbell-Stone Singers sang for Pace. Fine Arts Week Pace strongly feels that fine arts are and should be a part of every person ' s experience. This second Fine Arts Week brought many fine performers and artists to Pace this year. The Ruth Mitchell Dance Company presented a fascinating performance of The Six Wives of Henry VIII. Performances by the North Springs High School Band directed by Herb Cox, the Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet, the Westminster Ensemble direaed by Frank Boggs, and the Boggs Academy A Capella Chorus directed by Leon Newman were appreciated by audiences during the week. A performance by singers Janet Stewart, Barbara Dean, Sam Hagan, and David Johnson of highlights from several different operas was particularly timely since Opera Week in Atlanta was just ahead. II llii Music Choral music was an outstanding part of the year. Beginning with performances of THE SOUND OF MUSIC and ending β– with a fine program the last day of school, many people contributed their talents to appreciative audiences. Robin was nominated for the Governor ' s Honors program. The Girls ' Trio received an ' excellent ' rating in the District 5 Solo and Ensemble Festival, and were contestants in the Kiwanis Kapers. The Boys ' Double Quartet earned an ' excellent ' rating in the Literary Meet and in the GMEA Festival. A Girls ' Ensemble was chosen this spring for their interest and musical ability, and they performed for the first time in the music program at the end of school. Directors Mr. Ralph Nolen and Mrs. Jane Murphy produced three oustanding shows after six weeks of rehearsal. Alan Pait directed the set construaion and lighting, and he managed the stage crew. The production was sponsored by the Pace Academy Parents ' Club. Even after the stage production was over, there were many requests for concert versions of the music. One of those performances was given at the Cambell-Stone retirement center. Our Town The Pace Players under the direction of Mr. George Mengen gave a very fine performance of Thornton Wilder ' s OUR TOWN. This was senior Randy Owen ' s last performance in a stage play as a Pace student, and he will be missed. .-.-.-.- jL. .... Faculty- Student Basketball Students were defeated by a tough faculty team. m v HkS Skidaway Students who were taking advanced biology and others who were interested who had passed first- year biology were eligibile to be chosen to go to Skidaway Island to experiment in marine biology. The study of the ecological nature of the area was made by studying the marshlands. Students learned that everything affecting the ecology of the area centers around the marshlands. If pollution kills the cord grass, then there is nothing to hold the beach, and the land will wash away. Boat traffic in the area is heavy, and most of the pollution turned out to be oil from boats. By studying crab burrows one can learn many details about the area. Each type of crab species has a different burrow and different type of debris in the burrow, so it is possible to determine what type of crab lived in the burrow. Crabs dig to the water line, and it is possible to construct a topographical map of the area by looking at crab burrows. Core samples made from the shoreline to the maritime forest line were also x-rayed and studied to help determine the structure of the marsh and what kind of animals lived in the marsh. 1 β– - Coin and Stamp Club SPONSOR: Mr. John Cogan Math and Science Club SPONSOR: Mrs. Paula Mallory The Math and Science Club took a field trip to the Georgia Tech Computer Center and got a guided tour of the entire installation. Students got to see card punches, card sorters, tape drives, and computer consoles in actual operation. Perhaps the most exciting and interesting part of the trip was programming questions into a computer and then seeing the responses on a television monitor. The Math and Science Club also sponsored a science fair this year, and many interesting projects were displayed. Awards were given at Pace, and Joel Kahn ' s project went to region and state competition. In the state competition Joel ' s projea won a third place award. The Pace Science Fair winners were: SENIOR DIVISION; First: Joel Kahn Second: Nancy Mezritch Third: Alan Piha JUNIOR DIVISION: First (a joint project) : Kingsley Dahl and Kevin Hatch Second: Charles Scurry Third: Betsy Garlington French Club Banquet The French Club had its annual banquet at Emile ' s this year. A.V.A. was also responsible for bringing together people from different cultural, social and economic backgrounds in an atmosphere of love and affection. The Inner City Tutorial group helped students at a Title One school in southeast Atlanta in various academic areas and also in art, music, and physical education. Art Club SPONSORS: Mrs. Connie Nations Mrs. Coopie Foshee This year the students who belonged to the Art Club were able to take a field trip to the Atlanta College of Art. The Art Club students also decided that the cafeteria needed brightening, so they designed and painted the mural which is now decorating the wall above the cold line. Members also did the hanging and judging of the art show for Fine Arts Week. The Honor Society sponsored the teacher ' s aid program this year. Seniors were assigned to faculty members who needed some help running off hand- outs and giving individual help to other students Interact, a service organization of Pace, has participated in many worthwhile projects this year. The club continued to suppon an orphan in Korea, and the club collected for the Jewish Relief Fund. Interact also held a Halloween carnival for both Pace and A.V.A. children. The highlight of the year for Interaa members was the convention at Callaway Gardens for old and new officers. Honor Society SPONSOR: Mrs. Barbara Hunter Interact Club SPONSOR: Mr. J. Third, Pace hosted its first tournament for novice debaters and won first place. Fourth, Pace placed first in state class B and placed first in the All-Class State Tournament.
