BOARD OF EDUCATIO All the world is a stage and we are the actors. ln America as in no other country, the stage has been set for making our high schools one of the greatest unifying forces in the world. They make our people one. Our public school system touches the life of every citizen. All Americans do not belong to the same church. They are not all members of one political party. They are not all engaged in like occupations. Their ancestors came from many countries of the world. They represent all the races of mankind. Every language which men speak may be heard on the streets and in the shops of America. The high school is an instrument of a society of free men. lt brings together the young men and women of a community, regardless of the economic or social status of their families, and without discrimination because of their cultural backgrounds. It provides an opportunity for each of you to develop your own talents to the utmost and to find your future career in a field best suited to your interest and capacity. No other nation guards more zealously the freedom of individuals and groups to go their own way . This freedom is recognized around the world as the American way of living. It has enabled us to avoid the dreadful influence of domination and mass mind thinking. You will appreciate this more and more as you grow older and face some of the more serious problems of life. As time goes on and you graduate from high school, we sincerely urge you to do your share in keeping the stage set so that generations to come may enjoy the advantages you are so fortunate to have. Education helps all of us to become interested in other things and other places. Education helps us to acquire the things we want and need. Education helps to give us a better background of training, a better understanding and a greater interest in things around us and in life in general. High school students are in the process of growing up, and I might add, growing up in very trying times. Wars and the aftermath of wars with their destruction of human life, wealth, and resources, inevitably leave their mark on all peoples. Wars with their accompanying destruction bring enumerable and challenging problems which will ultimately have to be solved by the youth of today. This is a challenge that must be met by you. Your high school education will help you to meet these challenges. Education signifies growth, both physical and mentalg and your growth has spread in many directions. You have grown in self-control and honestyg you know the difference between right and wrong. You have grown in your respect for proper authorityg you have grown in your con- sideration for others. You have learned proper mannerisms, and you have grown in your general behavior. Witli these growths comes a confidence that will carry you a long way in discharging your responsibilities to society and to help you to make the right kind of decisions in solving present and future problems.
