We hope we've played them well. Now, in the 1953 Tattler, we have tried to present an accurate account of this act in our high school career. For many of us, this is the closing scene. We'll soon be leaving this play to take our part in another one. For those of us who are leaving, this Tattler is the last tie with our high school days. For the rest of you, it is only a resume of one act in an exciting four act play. We, the Seniors, hope you enjoy the entire pro- duction as much as we did. 4 QQ Yam THE PROGRAM PRODUCERS AND DIRECTORS ...... Mr. Vincent 84 Mr. Bostad .................... A PROD UCERS AND DIRECTORS 7 Every member of the Class of 1953 is familiar with Shakespeare's immortal statement in As You Like It that All the Worltl's a stage. Each one has played some of the parts. Other parts will follow. However, later on in his famous play Shakespeare wrote, 'lWhen my cue comes, call me, and l will answer. To be ready, to answer when the call comes, is one of the most important reasons for educational training. To play the part well, no matter what the assignment, should be the aim and ambition of each one. We feel assured that the members of the Class of '53 will continue, as they have in the past four years, to carry out their respective parts with credit to themselves, their parents, their school and community, and that wherever they find themselves in the years that lie ahead, they will he able to say, Wl1en my cue comes, call me and l will answer. BGSTAD ia Nam 9 W :atc an 'iyffjfzi Mk iilrwittfclit l Mftftfitlflfl M Secretaries Mrs. Dorothy Drifka Mrs. Ann McCallum NW Most of us will admit that people in general are more interested in themselves than they are in anything else. Education helps all of us to become interested in other things and other places. Education helps us to acquire the things we want and need. Education helps to give us a better background of training, a better understanding and a greater interest in things around us and in life in general. High school students are in the process of growing up, and I might add, growing up in very trying times. Wars and the aftermath of wars with their destruction of human life, wealth, and resources, inevitably leave their mark on all peoples. Wars with their accompanying destruction bring enumerable and challenging problems which will ultimately have to be solved by the youth of today. This is a challenge that must be met by you. Your high school education will help you to meet these challenges. Education signifies growth, both physical and mentalg and your growth has spread in many directions. You have grown in self-control and honestyg you know the difference between right and wrong. You have grown in your respect for proper authorityg you have grown in your con- sideration for others. You have learned proper mannerisms, and you have grown in your general behavior. Witli these growths comes a confidence that will carry you a long way in discharging your responsibilities to society and to help you to make the right kind of decisions in solving present and future problems. Good luck to all members of the class of 1953. A. G. Bostad A. Anderson, G, Hanson, F. Roman, Dr. W. G. Wlochinski, W. Ruff, T. Holthusen, P. M. Vincent. I.. Courtney, H. Friday, K. Hurlbut, l.. BOARD OF EDUCATIO All the world is a stage and we are the actors. ln America as in no other country, the stage has been set for making our high schools one of the greatest unifying forces in the world. They make our people one. Our public school system touches the life of every citizen. All Americans do not belong to the same church. They are not all members of one political party. They are not all engaged in like occupations. Their ancestors came from many countries of the world. They represent all the races of mankind. Every language which men speak may be heard on the streets and in the shops of America. The high school is an instrument of a society of free men. lt brings together the young men and women of a community, regardless of the economic or social status of their families, and without discrimination because of their cultural backgrounds. It provides an opportunity for each of you to develop your own talents to the utmost and to find your future career in a field best suited to your interest and capacity. No other nation guards more zealously the freedom of individuals and groups to go their own way . This freedom is recognized around the world as the American way of living. It has enabled us to avoid the dreadful influence of domination and mass mind thinking. You will appreciate this more and more as you grow older and face some of the more serious problems of life. As time goes on and you graduate from high school, we sincerely urge you to do your share in keeping the stage set so that generations to come may enjoy the advantages you are so fortunate to have. Hauber, S. jones, I.. Cook, R, Hoerter Bottom a--- D. Miller, A. Lang, D. Behrendt lt is the duty of the police cadets to find and eliminate safety hazards around the high school. Eight boys, two from each class, check on all the parking of bicycles and cars, on the over-enthusiastic ball players who use the lawn each spring, and do any other jobs that are neces- sary. These boys also sponsored an after-game dance. The officers were as follows: David Behrendt, presidentg Larry Cook, vice-presidentg Arden Lange, secretaryg jack Hauber, treasurer. Mr. Bostad and Mr. McDonald are their advisers in the high school. Sergeant Frank Barbers from the local police department also works with the boys. The attendance workers are those boys and girls who help Mr. Kuhl in the attendance office. This is an important job, involving a great deal of responsibility. The workers must pick up the attendance slips in the morning and at noon and keep an accurate record of the students who are absent. If a teacher neglects to mark .1 student absent, she later receives a little notice from the attendance worker. Each of them realizes that attendance records must be absolutely accurate because state aid to schools is based on actual attendance. The attendance worker can be proud that he is doing a worth while job. Top - D. Schulfer, D. Breitenstein, M. Hoag, j. Varney, H. Zenoft, Galccke. Middle - A. Peplinski, R. Soik, J. This is the story of a minister nd his family who have just moved to a new iarish. Moving was fung but when they walk nto the rundown, dilapidated parsonage at Lake- own, they receive quite a shock. The roof leaks. .n unsightly rug covers the floor, limp and faded urtains hang from the windows, and the furniture s in deplorable condition. Besides having the igly parish house to contend with, the Reverend Spence has to cope with all the parishioners who ry to run the church. XX'ealthy Mrs, Sandow is G. Becker, C. Knudtson, D. Breitenstein, l.. Nelson trying to get the foreigners out of town. Mrs. Digley, who has been choir soloist for twelve years, insists on keeping that position. Mrs. jelli- son and Mrs. Cambridge are great rivals in church work, and sparks fly whenever they are together. Wlmile the older folks are having their troubles, the young people also get involved in a few scrapes and have romantic troubles. Finally, all the prob- lems are solved. The Reverend Spence gets a new church and parsonage, the parishioners accept his decisions and decide to cooperate, and the young- sters straighten out their love affairs in time for a happy ending. 27 Standing - D. THE STAFF OF YOUR lfarly this fall, the N255 Tattler staff met for the first time. livery member was eager to get started and make this the best Tattler ever! WT searched and searched for a theme and finally settled on one. XXfe debated and worried over the cover. And then we got down to serious work. The layout staff had the first big job. It was their duty to plan every page. Then the photography staff took over. Their job was to see that the pittures were taken and given to the layout staff, who prepared them for the engravers. Near the end of the first semester, the business staff finished taking advertisements. Their next job was to get subscriptions. by this time the editorials were due. Thou- sands of words accurately describing the activities of the year had to be written. Wlien they were finished, the editorials were given to the typists who prepared them for the printers. The art editor finished the division pages, and the dummy was put together. Then it was off to the printer. Now everyone could relax except the editor who had to read proof when it came back. Putting out the Tattler has been a big job and a hard one, but the entire staff has loved every minute of it. '5 TTLER ,ff is Editor ............,.... Associate Editor ........ ..... The boys have been very successful in sportsg in fact, many of them have been on the varsity teams. The girls have been busy in a great many activities. The whole sophomore class has been well represented in forensics, clramatics, the Fair and Supper, and many other clubs and societies. Tom Whelihan was presidentg Mary .lo Breitenstein, vice-presi- clentg jane Weronke, secretaryg and Dave De- Keyser, treasurer. Moscinslci, Pres., D. Schull, At the beginning of this year everything was new and strange to the freshmen of P. Jacobs. Gradually their shyness wore away. They no longer bought elevator tickets nor got lost between classes. In a few weeks they became accustomed to high school routine and began to take part in its activities. The first duty of the freshmen was to bring boxes for the Homecoming bonfire. Soon they invaded the Sugar Bowl, took part in the Fair and Supper, and began to attend various school meetings. Each and every one of them has had a full and busy year. They are ready and able to lead P. j. Jacobs during the next three years. Freshman class officers: President ................. ..... If you are a music fan. you will be very gnthusiastic if some Monday, XX'ednesday, or Fri- .lay afternoon, you enter room 307 during fifth Jr sixth period and hear the beautifully blended voices of the Girls' or Boys' Glee Club. Both groups meet three times a week to prepare music for concerts and to sing merely for enjoyment. l'hey are often requested to sing for the Twilight Music Club or to participate in the Christmas and spring concerts presented by all the music or- ganizations in school. The Boy's Glee Club this year is small but select. These freshman and sophomore boys will soon be the backbone of our A Capella choir. The Girls' Glee Club is somewhat larger. Its members often prepare concerts among themselves to be presented in front of their classmates. In these performances you will find piano, violin, and vocal solos along with many duets and trios. This year Coach john Beste had inost of last year's hotkey team hatk with the exception of live players who were lost heeause of graduation. The putlisters opened xx ith a win at Madison West. They showed plenty of spark at the beginning ot' the season but then slacked off until the last game when they heat a strong Rhinelander team. They helped to tie up the conference with three wins and four losses. Ralph Banke was the high scorer for the year with eleven points. He was also elected Captain ofthe Year. Wrestling has proved itself to be one of the mst popular winter sports. lt was enthusiastically 'lcomed by a large number of boys this year. ie Panther grapplers again enjoyed an outstand- g season. The loss of lettermen didn't hamper : wrestlers. Led by the new wrestling coach, '. IDeWitt, they compiled a record of seven tories and two defeats. Both of the set-backs re received from the powerful Madison East m. The Panthers won the sectional meet and it .seven men to the state tournament. The cheerleaders participated in all pep assemblies, put on a skit in the Fair and Supper, had their own Homecoming float, and led cheers at the bonfire before the Homecoming game. Lois Nelson was chosen head cheerleader at the beginning of the year. The A Squad cheer- leaders were Carole Knudtson, Lois Nelson, Shirley Schliesman, jackie Viertel, Marlene Grubba, Eleanor Krubsack, Dorothy Steckel, and Margie Sturm. SPEEDY PANTHERS Every fall, the Cross Country team has been one of the first groups to hit the athletic field. Their training period is the same length as that of the football season. Again, as in the past, the Cross Country team has been hampered by the loss of lettermen. Lynn Thomson earned his letter last year. He was the only returning letterman on this year's squad. To earn a letter, the pros'-pective harrier must participate in at least two-thir s of the meets and turn out regularly for practice. Dick Hof- meister, Frank Leahy, john Lewis, Jim Whitman, and Dave Zinda earned their letters this season. '52 CHAMPIONS The Golf team of P. Jacobs High School had four out of five letter winning golfers from last year's squad - Dick Viertel, jerry Schein, Kenneth Kropidlowski, and Dick Hofmeister. The team started practicing in March under Coach Grode. The Panther linksmen had great hopes of continuing their string of twelve consecutive victories and again winning the Wisconsin Valley Conference championship which they won in 1952. This year's schedule included inter-squad matches with LaCrosse, Beloit, Waupaca, Wausau, and Wisconsin Rapids, as well as the conference and state tournaments. K. Kropidlowski, R. Viertel, R. Hofmeister, Mr. Crude. j. Schein, GOLF BASEBALL The baseball season was welcomed by a large number of boys. Drills started in early April under the direction of the new coach, Mr. Knapton. A small number of returning lettermen formed a nucleous for the Panther eleven. The lack of experienced players was overcome by a show of hustle and determination. As was expected, the Panthers again earned an outstanding record and performed well in Wisconsin Valley Conference and against other opponents. SWIMMING The completion of our swimming pool made possible the formation of an entirely new athletic group in school this year. This group -- namely, the water ballet -- was composed of girls who swam like fish, could do acrobatics and even ballet in the water! Of course, like anything else that requires perfection of form and grace, water ballet took hours of practice and hard work plus much imagination for creating of beautiful, funny, or graceful routines. The girls participating in the spring recital were C. Buggs, M. Buggs, S. Kli- mowitz, M. Rice, P. Kropelowski, J. Weronke, B. Copps, R. Wright, Y. Hebal, and B. Sorenson on the first team, L. Sarchet, S. Somers, S. Sea- graves, W. Freeman, R. Sorenson, M. Gruba, L. Blake, N. Newby, R. Willett, D. Sanks, and K. Greaton on the second team, M. Groenert, M. Bellinger, D. Hyland, K. Klish, V. Golla, S. Wil- lett, M. Krueger, and G. Speerstra as reserves. 1 1 is X TRACK At the time these lines went to press, the Panther track season was just beginning. There were only four returning lettermen among the 58 boys, mostly freshmen and sophomores, who reported to Coach Donovan for opening day practice. The returning lettermen, who formed the nucleous of the team, included Norm Ryskoski, Ralph Banke, jim Higgins, and Don Ryskoski, The thinclads had a chance to show off their new uniforms in the first meet, which took place at Wisconsin Rapids. During the season there were nine meets. With so many good prospects, every- one expected a very successful track season. TENNIS Although its season has not started at the time of this publication, the tennis team of 1953, under the direction of Coach Bob Davies, is look- ing forward to a promising season with most of their top players returning. The all-conference award was won by the team of 1952. This year we hope our boys can also win that title. The boys work hard every day after school practicing for the matches with Wausau and Wis- consin Rapids, our hardest opponents. The competition is keen but our boys will do their best. More notice should be given to the tennis team. This year let us follow them all the way through the season. e L -. . -.r 'N- , lg , . 51 Xl be 5 , ' R -saa RN M , 'Q We W T ,Q 1 x 'lx I T A D ' 1 'fl X Q., e egg H .
