The initiation of the freshmen was the beginning ofthe proof of our new-found powers and privileges. We were no longer freshmen, just out ofjunior high school. We knew our way around, and were just a little contemptous of those new-comers who didn't. This year has been a half-way mark for us, and we were more than a little startled to realize that instead of four long years in front of us , there were only two short ones--that we must get every little bit of good from them now, for they would never come again. KA 5 g I, T l J, SPORTS an integral part of the American way of life and a part of our school and our year. Our sports build bodies, but more important they build character, confidence and self-control. From the first time we are on a softball or football team down in the elementary school, we work at sports and love them for there's no thrill quite like winning a race, or sinking a beautiful shot, whether it's in the P.E. class or the dist-rict play-off. 5' Our athletic plant is reputed to be one of the best equipped in all West Texas. Always expanding, the campus has grown rapidly inthe past few years. Lion Stadium andthe Davidson Memorial Gymnasium have both been dedicated within the last few seasons. Each is equipped with the best materials available. Coupled withthe buildings in which we do most of our studying, our athletic plant provides a well- rounded program in our school life. MISS RETA BALLINGER CROWNED FOOTBALL QUEEN Every Friday night in fall brought a football game. We sat in icy winds and warm breezes to watch our purple and gold teamn. The Lions didn't win many games, but they played hard and clean, as evidenced by the tie with Eden for the Glasscock Sportsmanship Award. Some people thought our student body needed a little more football spirit, that maybe we could have yelled a little louder for the Lions. Nevertheless, we loved 'em and backed 'em because they were Our Team. iw 345 :N gh., X ,4 Yxif Vlfjl. X v- ' L Reta was crowned football queen at the annual football banquet. The team gave her a handkerchief auto- graphed by all of them, a bouquet of roses and serenaded her--a little off key--with Let Us Call You Sweet- heart. FALL BROUGHT FOOTBALL l Aw. ' I FOOTBALL!!! We worked hard and maybe loafed a little. We laughed and had our bad moments, too. We thought, talked, read and dreamed football. We had our jokes about practice and training, about other players and the funny things that happened. We might have even joked a little when we won the Glasscock Award. But we were proud of it and of our team. It was all part ofthe 1951 football season. The results of this election were kept a deep, dark secret until the announcement was made at the banquet. Tom Piner and Charles Garlitz were chosen to lead the Lions in '5Z. Tom is a junior, has lettered in the backfield for three years, and was one of the tri- captains this year. Charles is a sopho- more, has lettered for two years, played various positions inthe line and this year was named to the second all-district team. FOOTBALL MR. BRAY COMMENDS THE 1951 TEAM ON THEIR Mothers of the team members did most of the planning and work that made this year's football banquet such a big success. The place cards, which were made by Clay Adams, were caricatures ofthe team members, and all the guests received leather autograph books in the shape of footballs. These gota bit battered before the evening was over from the countless names each collected. The speeches were good, the jokes funny, the food delicious--Mr. Pelto Said the apple pie and cheddar cheese was his One Touch of Minnesota. And of course there were the words that have become OHS folklore, which were uttered by Kootsey Smith when the boys were asked to introduce their dates: I brung myself. I-Ie was always dependable in a tight spot and wouldn't choke. Very good as a defensive ball player. Bobby was a Senior. TOM PINER proved that basketball is still halfdefense by making the Eldorado All-Tournament team on defense. We think Tom did aswell job both offensively and defensively. Tom was a Junior, so has one more year. S awk- .ai 2 BILL MANESS was the boy with the eye, When he shot, the big boys who were to rebound went down to the other end of the court. No sense in rebounding a ball after it sails through the hoop. Bill was a Juniorg his talents will be depended on next year. BILL SCHNEEMANN was our scorer this year. With his rebound, pivot, and jump shots he pushed through more points than any other player this season. A hustler and a rebounder, he was one of the boys who made our double post offense click. DON COOPER a good rebounder, and a real hustler on aloose ball. This was Don's first year out, and he dida goodjob. Next year, as a Senior, he should prove to be doubly good. JOE BAILEY Drive, drive and keep driving was Joe's motto. You can see that he carried this out, by getting 131 freethrows. Joe was a Senior and will be missed next season. 5-ififitevfgfs f!f2ii'5E.2 mgm..s snoii CHARLES GARLITZ made the All-Tournament team at Big Lake by playing a magnificent game against San Angelo. He was just a Sophomore, opponents look Out in the next two years. VIRGIL, MACHADO Four point Virgil could always be depend- ed on to get four points or more. Virgil is a Senior and his graduation will be a loss to the squad. SCOTT HICKMAN had toughluck this year. He missed two tournaments and four games because of ill- ness, but when he played he ate the opposing team up with his left-hand jump shot and his rebounding. WAYNE KUYKENDALL. another eye who could shoot from any place and hold his own against anybody under any conditions. Wayne is a Junior, and should be one of the most valuable men on the squad next year. WILBURN CONKLIN started a little late, but toward the end of the season he had developed a terrific one-hand jump shot Wilburn is also a Junior, and should show much improvement next year. In North Elementary and South Elementary the fundamentals of a smooth functioning Stu- dent Council are learned. In Junior High we use our know how to really get a voice in the rules, activities, etc. of our school. ln High School, the Student Council selects the annual staff and decides much about school elections, in additionto giving the administration and faculty the stu- dents' viewpoint on various problems. Everyone worked hard, and thanks to this work and Mrs. Hull's determination, the costuming, setting and timing were perfect. Everyone laughed especially hard at farmer Adam Pottle of the long, lank body and country drawl. And Junior Play there was Miss Ketura Katt, who swore by her ouija board. The show, directed by Mrs. Janie Hull, the stage decora- tions by Saunders, and music by the OHS dance band, was one of the department's biggest and best. Everyone enjoyed it and there were some lovely clothes shown. Some ofthe prettiest formals for spring dances in many a season. Handsome escorts, too. I Juniors Fete Seniors . . . 3 N The Juniors honored the Seniors with their annual banquet and all-school dance on April 25. They gym was changed into a garden in springtime, complete with maypole and fountain that flowed red Wine . The Junior mothers worked all day transforming the gym, and putting the finishing touches on the very beautiful garden scene. The Juniors themselves contributed their share of the , I . . Work, for they made the hundreds of sparkling-stars which . ,rv formed the canopy overhead. The banquet guests were seated at small tables arranged around the fountainin the garden, which made a striking arrange- ment. The food was delicious, and everyone had fun. Each boy thought his date was the prettiest, naturally, After the last dance, we wove the maypole and tore down the balloons, for souvenirs. They chose Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. Virgil Machado played the part of Lane, the butler, while LarryGraves had a similar role as Merriman. Reta Ballinger was Lady Brack- nell, with Jo Ann Deaton as Gwendoline Fair- fax, her daughter, Norris Pogue as Algernon Moncrieff and Joe Bailey as Jack Worthing , were the heroes of the production. Kay Kirby was Cecily Cardew, Jack's ward, with Wanda Carden portraying Miss Prism, her governess and companion. John Greer was Rev. Fred- erick Chasuble. The play was well done--Norris and Joe seemed to especially enjoy their roles. They even seerned to fall naturally into the tradi- tional pose of that period. Mrs. Massingill and the cast worked hard. Mr. Harris and stage managers Bobby Womackand Pete Cisneros spent hours painting the stage scenery. We enjoyed this departure from the ordinary production of farce or slap- stick comedy, After it was over, . will 'JOAIP County Agent Pete Jacoby with the out- standing 4-H boys of the year, who re- ceived their awards in a special assembly. Our buildings have a reputation of being modern even though some of them were built thirty years ago. The Junior High is the oldest on the campus, the High School was built nextg and the two ele- mentary schools are of recent construction. This year saw the initial step in the con- struction of the new building which is to house a modern shop, hornemaking cottage, band hall, and the county's historical collection. Our buildings have been well cared for and with our facilities, receiving an education is much easier than it was in the past. Qin M- Tuesday evening, May 27, saw the graduation of one of the largest classes in the history of the Ozona Schools, when 38 students graduated from the Junior High School. Jerry B e a sley acted as master of cere- monies in a program presented entirely by the members of the 8th grade. A piano duet was pre- sented by Susie Schneemann and Martha Bailey, the class history was read by Georgiana Ball, and Carol Blackstone gave the class will. Ann Bag- gett played a piano solo, Dwight Odom rendered a baritone solo, and Carol Friend and Robbie Kuykendall joined forces to give the class pro- phecy. The fateful day finally arrived--Monday, May Z6- -Graduation Day. After twelve years of more or less hard work, eight Seniors said farewell to O. H. S. Those eight boys and girls looked lost marching down that aisle. The commencement address was delivered by Mr. W. T. Walton, vice-president and dean of students at Hardin-Simmons University. Sunday afternoon we were entertained in the Blue Room at the Roosevelt Hotel. The music and the floorshow were so delightful some of us came back that night. We had our picture made here, and at leastpartof our group seems to be having a good time. Virgil and Raul had dates else- where, so they missed being in the picture. Monday we pulled out for Galveston and had barely arrived before some went splashing into he Gulf. Others walked around looking for an musement park, no less. They found one, so ou can guess where we went that night. The Senior Trip The next morning, after a hectic night with a roller coaster,we left for San Antonio, via the San Jacinto Monument and the Battleship Texas. When we arrived in San Antonio it was too late to vis it an amusement park, but we were getting mighty eager to get home, so nobody really mis s e d it. Next stop, Ozona. Say, the old place hasn't changed much since we left, has it? New Orleans took our hearts, and any of the Seniors would return there at any time, if you will just buy them a bus ticket. We think it was one of the nicest Senior trips a class could ever have, and our thoughts will always return to this, the final event of our Senior year. .4-xvsnz.--.. 4 5 : G I-,51g:gL--7,5-.iii Y 5. f' H: Hr nf?
