K 1-ff' HSHLHR Q H Vernon Bradford has served faithfully since his election last September as the efficient head yell-lead- er of the college through the football and basket ball seasons. This is his third year in the college. He is a member of the student government. He takes a leading part in arranging and playing in those preliminary basketball games which are the delight of the college students. In his freshman year he was the runner-up in the college tennis tournament, and last year he was a member, of the tennis squad. Ver- non has served several semesters as sports editor of the Whistler and is associated with those organizations in the college which stand for progress and character. VERNON BRADFORD Basketball Out of nearly new material Coach M. A. Collard this year constructed a cage squad which compiled one of the finest records made by an Ozark Wesleyan team in any past year. Only one game did this team lose in the official basketball season, and only one Ieraptice game, played early in December with the varsity team of the Pittsburg Teachers' o ege. A In spite of the fact that Pittsburg buried them under a one-sided score. the Lions ,- set such a fast pace in the January-February season that they completed their schedule with an average of 22 points a game as compared with an average of 28 points for their , opponents in the eight games of 1929. This splendid average was good for seven victories an one de eat. . U The best game of the season was probably that. with the Northeast Oklahoma -' Junior College on the local court. On this occasion the Lions taught their opponents so r much .about basketball that Northeast defeated them when a return game was played' at ,, Miami.. Another. feature of the season was a two-day trip to Bolivar and Jefferson City. j At Bolivar the Lions administered their second punishment of the year to the Southwest gi . Baptist College, 36 to 31. The following night at Jefferson City, the Jefferson City Junior .LL College Bears were victims of the highest score made by the Lions during the year, 23 to 43. The two victories over Bolivar this year evened an old score with the Baptists who defeated the Lions twice in 1927. 4' At the opening of the second semester the Lions lost their captain and star guard, Vic ,. Woods, who did not re-enter college. His loss was keenly felt the remainder of the season. ,,:. Collard, who is completing his second year as the tamer and trainer of the Ozark Wesleyan Lions, has established in this time a strong friendship and good-will for his department and for himself among the students and faculty members of the college. With the exception ol foot-ball, he has sent unusually strong teams into the field to represent Ozark Wesleyan. 'Ihe basket- ball team was one of the fastest in the dis- trictg the 1928 track team made an excellent record, and the 1928 basketball team gave a good account of itself. Coach Merrel A. Collard received his A.B. degree at Missouri Wesleyan of Cameron, Missouri, in 1921. In the intervening years between 1921 and 1927 when he became the O. W. mentor, Coach Collard was coach at Fairfield fIll.J High School, head coach at Central Wesleyan College, at Warrenton, Missouri, and spent one year in the automo- bile business in Carmi, Illinois. He served in the army during the World War with the rank of sergeant. As member of high school and college teams he compiled an enviable record. COACH MERRELL A. COLLARD Football The Lions should win nine football games next year. In 1927 they crashed through to one victory in seven starts. In 1928 they tripled the 1927 performance by hangingup three glorious triumphs in eight games. If the Lions will only repeat this feat of tripllng the previous season's victories each year a history-making team ought to appear on the field next year. One of the most notable events of last grid season was the Homecoming victory of the Lions over the Fort Scott Junior College, 13 to 6. This game was one of the most in- teresting battles seen on any gridiron in the district, featured by the offensive punch of Ozark Wesleyan. Another worth-while game was at Muskogee where Ralph Ross dashed 85 yards to Bacone's 1-yard line after intercepting an Indian pass on Ozark Wesleyan's 14- yard line. When Carrie McBee went over for a touchdown a few minutes later the Lions earned a 6 to 0 victory over their Indian rivals. The Lions had the satisfying experience of burying another ancient rival, the the Southwest Baptists, under a landslide, 37 to 0, on the Ozark Wesleyan field. The Miami game which opened the season should have gone also to Ozark Wesleyan, for the Lions showed much more power than the Miners. O, W. C. lost the ball on its own 3-yard line in the last five minutes of play when a touchdown would have produced at least a tie. There is certainly no criticism to be made of the Lions who took part in the games nor of Coach Collard for any reverses during the season. It is impossible to build a for- midable football machine with only 15 to 18 men out for practice each evening. All in all it was an entertaining season, win or lose. Ben Jarrett, quarterback, led the Lion's scorers with 18 points for the season. Otis McGaughey, fullback, was second with 13 counters and Fred Allen, halfback, accounted for 13. The other points were McBee, half-back, sixg Kenneth Lytle, end, six, Ralph Ross 'half-back and end, one. +++g++444+++++++4++4+++ +g,I929,ig J 3++4+4++4+4++++4+4++++p4: . Page Seventy Nine
