5. .9 4. . H L H R 5. .g. 4. -3. .3 4. 4. . ., 4. .g. lege are men and women of this character. At the last session of the Board of Trustees in June 1928 the program to raise one million dollars was authorized and Dr. Louis M. Potts, Vice President, was named as the Director of this program. At the session of the St. Louis Conference held in Butler, Missouri, last October the Board of Education of the :QL Conference approved the Million Dollar Program and asked the churches of the Conference to support it to their best ability, The Million Dollar 4, Program Committe is headed by Attorney Allen McReynolds of Car- thage as General Chairman: Judge Frank L. Gass of Carterville, Mo., Vice-Chairmang Mr. O. E. Proctor of Carthage, Chairman of the Carthage City Committee, Dr. Louis M. Potts, Vice President of the College, Director. Secretary, and President Wm. Wirt King. Under the leadership of these men the Program has gone steadily forward and as .g. the Ashlar goes to press the Million Dollar Program is well past the half . Way mark with 3S525,000.00 subscribed. The very gracious and generous 5 ff gift of Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Green in the amount of 3S150,000.00 has P swelled the total to the above figure and greatly encouraged and heart- ' ened those connected with the College and its financial program. By June 1,1930 a total of one million dollars is expected to be raised. 4. v . x v Under the Committee organization a staff of experienced and able workers is being used in securing these funds. Reverend R. N. Jones has been with the College since July 1928 and has been a real force in helping our friends make their gifts. Reverend Leland H. Koewing joined the Million Dollars Program staff in October and since then has been in the Held collecting old pledges and securing new ones. His en- thusiasm and consecration have won many friends and a goodly number of substantial gifts. Miss Emma Knell, a much loved Carthage woman who has served in many community and state projects of philanthropic nature, has been giving her fine abilities to this Program and at present is leading the Women's Auxiliary in their Carthage canvass. We are i, happy to report that the Women's Auxiliary with Miss Knell as leader .- has been a vital factor in the success of the Carthage canvass. Mr. Orie -2- Snyder has been representing the Million Dollar Program under the 'lx insurance plan and although he has secured gifts of other nature his lx Qi.: . . . . . . . . 13-. chief concern has been in Writing insurance contracts. Publicity in any -1. ,:, financial campaign is essential and Mr. Maynard Durham, of Carthage, 0 A has been directing the publicity most satisfactorily. To all of these we give due credit for whatever success has been attained and as the Pro- .v gram advances their usefulness will increase. In order to stimulate interest on the part of the students in the Million Dollar Program an essay contest was held in which some twenty- -5' one students participated. The subject of the essay was, The Value of :if the Million Dollar Program to Ozark Wesleyan College. Prizes in the amounts of 32000, S10.00, 55.00, 33.00, and 32.00 were awarded the win- ners in respective order. Miss Thelma Marsh, a sophomore, has the distinction of winning first prize, Mr. Lawton Stukey, a senior, secondg ,, Miss Ruth Linn,.a junior, third, Mr. Arthur Mitchell, a junior, fourthg and Miss Bernice Merrill and Miss Virginia Irwin, juniors, tied for fifth place. The essay of Miss Marsh, winning first place, is herewith pre- sented to the readers of the Ashlar, - 5. . -.. J . .g. . ,. ,. , . . .,. l'1 .
