No, I said, and he nevcr ,li an did. The summer before we came here, Billy was kicked in the head by a Q 'R mule, and after that he was afraid of hurting his head. But he wasn't yel- gg low, because he fought to conquer his fear. Then when that Broadwood T' fly fellow kicked him and he wasn' t hurt, his old spirit returned. The half ended 7-6. At the start of the half, Broadwood carried the ball to our ten-yard line but was again held for downs. Billy punted to the middle of the field. On the first play, Broadwood passed and their right half raced forty ya1'dS to a touchdown. They missed goal, score 12-7. They kickeil and oiir receiver was downed on the nine-yard line. Then Billy started hitting the line. Two, three, four yards at a clip, just enough to make the first down. For ninety-two yards he carried the ball practically alone, never fumbling that s'ini1y ball, never failing to gain, only to lose the ball on a pass that was grounded behind the line. Time was growing short, the team seemed to have shot its bolt, the game was lost. p Broadwood inimediately punted. After jockeying about in the center of the field and exchanging punts, Billy received the ball on our 25-yard line. Thirty seconds remained to play. He called for a pass, the last resort. The center's pass was low and wide. A tackler was upon him. Billy picked up the ball and started around end. The crowd rose to its feet. Ah! he was down! But no! He had eluded a frenzied grasp and was gone. Caps, hats flew into the air, the fans split their throats. On! on! Beating hearts soared high with hope. and plunged to despair as he was seemingly brought down. He had pivoted from clutching arms. On, and on! The finaligun Went off. But flying feet pounded on! A stiff-arm, another tackler left behind. And then, only one tackler remained, the safety on the five-yard line. Billy did not try to dodge. He struck that safety with the speed of an express, bowled him over and dragged him across the line for a touch- down and the game! U A mad student body assembled under our window that night.
