Snwggtgangigtwgafagtgt ASH!-HR in 4? , . , . J . +5 rounding country must realize that as' Ozark Wesleyan grows in size an importance W scholastically, she is just as sure to grow in the excellence of her athletic teams. Basketball started differently this year. The first game was won. vrhile the season ended in defeat. But this team proved just as successful and iust as Well known. The team was knownlespecially for its fighting finishes. those last quarter spurts by a team, apparently beaten, that refused to acknowledge defeat. It was this lcind of play that made athletics the name for Ozark Wesleyan that it has. It is interesting to note that of the six games won during the season. four were victories snatched from seeming defeat in the last quarter. And in the Bacone' Indian game, the team came from seven points behind to within one of tying the score in the last few minutes. The basketball team also was coached by Doctor Moon, and it was captained by Garrett Cummings., who not only was a good player. but by, his example inspired his men to play hard. Seth Gibbons was chosen to lead the Lion Quintet for 1927. Seth is a forward who was high point man of the team, a man who can shoot from any angle or distance. and has a wicked eye for the basket. He should be an invaluable man next season. . ' But these two major sports were not all that students of Ozark Wesleyan engaged in. Girls participated in basketball, two bowling teams represented the college. one 'of college girls and one of college teachers. The teachers were champions of the Women! League. Many of the students played tennis on the college courts. I All this merely goes to show what a hold that keen competition in the field of athletics has on college life. It is coming to mean more and more to the youth of Amer- ica. and rightly so., for it is fine training for other fields of endeavor. Best of all. it teaches not only the players but everyone else the value of clean. honest fighting against odds, the kind of fight that every truly successful man has to 'put up. We feel that athletics in Ozark Wesleyan has taught this lesson. Unless it has, it has not accomplished its-purpose. We hope we will always be able to say for O. W. C.'s teams of the fut- ure as we can of this year's, as one of the great coaches of America has said. 95W-QR e3i5i?g1..29rQ'e...4'9+Q'a..4'9t?5 GIRLS' BASKETBALL TERM HIS was the first year that Ozark Wesleyan College has had a girls' bas- ketball team since the college was moved to Carthage. A number of girls wanted to play and decided to have a team. So with the able assistance of Miss Nina Withrow, a girls' basketball team was formed. Miss Helen Travis was elected to serve as captain. and performed this duty well throughout the year . One public appearance was made by the girls' team. when they played a prelimin- ary to the boys' game with Mountain Home College. This game was with the Carthage Business Girls, a team of all-stars that had playedifor years. some of whom with large colleges. The O. W. C. girls were beaten in this contest 13-8. 1 But with no reward in sight., no games to look forward to. no college letters to earn, these girls night after night practiced and held on. so that in the future Ozark Wes- leyan may again have a team of which she will be justly proud. Without the untiring efforts of those who begin a work, the achievements of thosefwfho follow would be im- possible. In the future years. champion teams of Ozark Wesleyan will be able to look back and say to these pioneers., Well done, you good and faithful servants. We are are proud of this team. These pi oneer S were composed of: Miss Ninn Withrow. Coach Helen Travis, Captain. Forward Elizabeth I-Inrleston.
