DR. HOWARD E. IMHOF Superi itll' t. ' ..t: I l l i ntendent of Schools As I sit by my office window looking out at the first signs of spring, l cannot help but see a similarity between a sturdy growing tree and the learning process. The tree grows from a small beginning. A young seedling's growth depends upon the soil that feeds it, the climate that surrounds it, and the human care with which it is tended. Its life depends upon the quality of its root system and its contribution to the world - either as a fruit- bearing tree or a shade tree - depends on the diversification of its branches. The learning process begins when a baby opens its eyes for the first time. The good food, the richness of the environment, and the loving care of the parents enable the child to grow in physical stature and in knowledge. The teachers help with the cultivation of the mind. The depth of knowledge, like a good root system of a tree, enables the student to develop stability, character and purpose. The breadth of knowledge, like the spreading branches of a tree, enables the adult to make worthwhile contributions to society. As Seniors in the year l962, a year which will have a most notable place in history, I hope that your roots are deep and your branches firm in order that you may withstand the pressures of an almost inconceivable world of tomorrow. May each ring of growth on your trunk of life bring you happiness. twficdlf

i .533 ,SF os Principal RICHARD E. NODELL -X. The Eyes are Windows of the Soul John Greenleaf Whittier All of us recognize beauty. Your Oysterette emphasizes outward niceties of our campus where you've been for some years. Appearance usually indicates inner attitude - neat homes and carefully tended grounds denote self respecting and prideful owners. The open window often proves inner neatness and good order, too. Like buildings, people have outer shells and grounds which may reveal the inner per- son. By behavior, and often through the eyes, the picture is made even more complete to chance observers. What picture passes through the windows 'of your soul? Do you meet each day with a grin, each person with a smile and greeting as you pass along hall or street? Smiles beget smiles and friendship, too! Can you be pleasant even when troubled, or are you one who challenges all about you, one who suffers imagined hurt from fancied whisperings or rumors? Have you learned to meet these with a laugh? Have you learned to let the happiness of living each day shine through your eyes, to let this inner glow greet each person whom you contact? A comelylouter self may bring you distant admiration, but a happy inner you will bring you friends. What impression on others do your eyes make for you? lnner brightness, spreading out and all about you, pictures your true self for those who want to know you best. Beauty is said to be skin deep, cultivating the inner beauties of self respect and friendliness should be part of your plan of living. The look in your eyes will do the rest. ' sei
