As students receiv- ing our education on such lovely grounds, we are emphasizing trees in this yearbook. Isaac Bickerstaffe- The Maid of the Mill The Class of 1962, with respect and affec- tion, dedicates this yearbook to Helen R. Blank, who for twelve years was our school librarian. For us who had the privilege of knowing her, the memory of her graciousness, her kindness, and her dignity will always en- clure. We were impressed by her unselfish- ness and by her lofty concept of duty. An inspiration and guide for our youth, a model of grace and integrity, Miss Blank bore the indelible mark of quality, which now and in the days to come will serve us as an inspira- tion and as a goal. i Dedication El ' - ix J., Ls! The first golden rays of sunlight are illuminating the sky in hues of lemon and rose. Suddenly the trees are chang- ing from mere silhouettes against a gray background to stately champions of beauty, glis- tening with animation. The waves on the waters ol' the harbor are sparkling in a crystal- line array as they find their way into shore. All of life is awakening with new vigor and vitality as it prepares to meet the challenges of a new day. As youth living in the United States of America, we are blessed with the opportunity of greeting each new day, not as a drudgery, but as an event to search out the secrets of life and enioy them. We are not familiar with severe poverty and disease. We do not know what it's like to sleep amidst the filth of a contaminated street, nor do we know how it is to lack enough energy to get up from that crude abode when daylight strikes. Let us then be thankful for what we have, and let us use our gifts wisely. For we, who are not blinded by squalid conditions, have an easier time seeing the sun shed its radiance upon the earth. Our undulled senses and souls can become aware of the magnificence of the universe anytime we lift up our hearts and minds to receive the splendor of all Creation. Your education has only commenced, Whether or not you enter one of our colleges or universities, you must keep informed. You must carefully study the world about you as you will be a part of important and far-reaching de- cisions. Furthermore, you must assume the responsibility for providing excellent education for future generations to meet their as yet unforeseen challenges. Our best wishes for happiness and success go with each of you. ff Seated, left to right: Dr. Howard E. lmhof, Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Lester L. George, President, Edward J. ' ..t: I l l i ntendent of Schools As I sit by my office window looking out at the first signs of spring, l cannot help but see a similarity between a sturdy growing tree and the learning process. The tree grows from a small beginning. A young seedling's growth depends upon the soil that feeds it, the climate that surrounds it, and the human care with which it is tended. Its life depends upon the quality of its root system and its contribution to the world - either as a fruit- bearing tree or a shade tree - depends on the diversification of its branches. The learning process begins when a baby opens its eyes for the first time. The good food, the richness of the environment, and the loving care of the parents enable the child to grow in physical stature and in knowledge. The teachers help with the cultivation of the mind. The depth of knowledge, like a good root system of a tree, enables the student to develop stability, character and purpose. The breadth of knowledge, like the spreading branches of a tree, enables the adult to make worthwhile contributions to society. As Seniors in the year l962, a year which will have a most notable place in history, I hope that your roots are deep and your branches firm in order that you may withstand the pressures of an almost inconceivable world of tomorrow. May each ring of growth on your trunk of life bring you happiness. twficdlf i .533 ,SF os Principal RICHARD E. NODELL -X. The Eyes are Windows of the Soul John Greenleaf Whittier All of us recognize beauty. Your Oysterette emphasizes outward niceties of our campus where you've been for some years. Appearance usually indicates inner attitude - neat homes and carefully tended grounds denote self respecting and prideful owners. The open window often proves inner neatness and good order, too. Like buildings, people have outer shells and grounds which may reveal the inner per- son. By behavior, and often through the eyes, the picture is made even more complete to chance observers. What picture passes through the windows 'of your soul? Do you meet each day with a grin, each person with a smile and greeting as you pass along hall or street? Smiles beget smiles and friendship, too! Can you be pleasant even when troubled, or are you one who challenges all about you, one who suffers imagined hurt from fancied whisperings or rumors? Have you learned to meet these with a laugh? Have you learned to let the happiness of living each day shine through your eyes, to let this inner glow greet each person whom you contact? A comelylouter self may bring you distant admiration, but a happy inner you will bring you friends. What impression on others do your eyes make for you? lnner brightness, spreading out and all about you, pictures your true self for those who want to know you best. Beauty is said to be skin deep, cultivating the inner beauties of self respect and friendliness should be part of your plan of living. The look in your eyes will do the rest. Early in June, a month famed for romance and beauty, the class of '62 held its first formal affair. Our Junior Prom, Mood Indigo , was indeed an evening that will long be remembered. Surrounded by garlands of flowers and the lilting music of Vic Maffei, grace- ful and lovely girls and handsome escorts spent the night dancing under a star-studded sky. The Grand March, marking the beginning of the end of an excit- ing evening, revealed our queen to be Marty Reiner and her attendants, Anette Thorup and Marilyn Schwarz. With a touch of sadness, as our night ended, we tried to store as many happy memories as possible to keep with us for a long, long time. I could have danced all night. Our beautiful queen, Marty Reiner, and her lovely offend ants, Marilyn Schwarz and Anette Thorup. A pause for some punch. I don'f like that mustache! Let me give you one of my cards. For one evening the Vernon School gymnasium became a festive street in the exciting city of Paris. The music, provided by Richard Meisler, led the radiant girls and their handsome escorts through a most memorable evening. The climax of our affair was the Grand March and the crown- ing of a beautiful and happy queen, Randi Thompson. Her attendants completing the lovely trio were Ellis-Ann Oschmann and Bar- bara Massa. The evening progressed, and as it grew later, the crowd thinned, leaving to continue the gala event at a nightclub or a party. April 14, 1962, will, I am sure, be re- membered by many as an unforgettable event. lm so happy! We've worked and had our fun together Four years ago the Class of 1962 descended upon the hallowed halls of O.B.H.S. as enthusiastic fresh- men. lt was we who supported the games and'dances with our money and presence. To lead us into our first activities, we elected Susan Higgins, Rick Solomon, Christina Dean, and Larry George. We held our first dance, Mardi Gras, and had our first cakesale. As we entered our sophomore year and the' world of equilateral triangles and frogs, we chose Beccy Brown, Larry George, Chrissie Dean, and Peggy De- laney as officers. We continued to raise money to- wards our Washington trip by staging two dances and sundry cakesales. 1960-61, our junior year, will long be remembered as a year of intense last-minute campaigning and elec- tion of J.F.K. We, too, elected our officers, including Bob Cole, Rocco Ranaldo, Chris Dean, and Linda Zodda. We held a car wash, which although attended by only a few, proved quite successful, as did our cakesales and dances. Our .prom, Mood Indigo, was a financial loss, but a social success for the twenty-five couples attending. With the arrival of our senior year, our class ac- quired new unity and enthusiasm. We continued sell- ing newspapers, as could be detected by the groans of the carrier prior to homeroom, and we proved to be excellent salesmen of magazines and candy. The year was interspersed with various space orbitings by Glenn and Carpenter, to which we sat spellbound before T.V. sets during many canceled classes. We chose the leadership of Henry Steen, Marge Sampler, Cathy Boerum, and Marian Neidich for this important year. Our treasury mounted with two dances and one cake- sale, as well as the unforgettable Harvey. The year was illuminated with our long-expected Washington trip. Weary but happy after our arrival home, we finished the year with our last activity, the Junior- Senior Prom, Rue de Paris - indeed a night to re- member, along with four wonderful years. ffl V-- K Af A IRENA ANASTASIO Always First N Q, . A prime example is the fact that it rained on graduation day for the first time in about seven years. Even though it was damp and rather gloomy outdoors, spirits were high in the gymnasium, For an hour pre- ceding the official ceremony, the soon-to-be alumni busied themselves with congratulations and .frenzied dressing. As the time drew near for the actual gradu- ation procession, faces grew more and more solemn. For a previously iovial and clownish group, we were the soberest group of individuals alive fthough this didn't last longll After we had marched into the auditorium to the sounds of Pomp and Circumstance, played on the organ by Mr. Luckenbillpland had managed to follow Mr. Dodd's' directions concerning sitting and standing, we settled ourselves on the well-heated stage. The salutqtory address, given by Marilyn Callaghan, fol- lowed. Unexpectedlyh.-I the first few seconds of the speech ran into comfetition with a two-year old who didn't'approve of hq ing to sit still. He voiced his com- plaint in quite a bloisterous manner, much to the dis- tress f all present. The next event, the presentation of the a ards, was a time of great surprise to all since none of us knew before hand who the recipients would be. Many a person stumbled forward with an aston- ished grin on his face to receive an award. The chorus, as they do every year, sang a selection that brought tears to the eyes of several seniors. Even though we were all happy to be graduating, the final- ity of it all did bring some momentary sadness. Follow- ing the chorus's rendition of The Halls of Ivy , Ricky Solomon gave the valedictory address, and by this time the child who had offered Marilyn competition had been quieted. The final act of commencement came at last - the presentation of our diplomas and Bibles. As each of us marched up to receive our reward for four years of work and worry, I am sure that a feeling of accom- plishment was present. After the ceremonies there was a general rush to the various changing rooms so that celebrating would not be delayed any longer than possible. Then the seniors of O.B.H.S. celebrated and celebrated and celebrated. Sunday, June 24, the graduation date of the class of 1962, ist a day that shall linger in our hearts forever. 'IT like . Ours is the tension at the foul line with the encouraging swats from teammates, the deliberate aim. We know team solidarity in the pre-game huddle, in the community-sharing of a dirty towel at time- out. Our sports life knows well long hours of training and all-out competition-the striving for excellence that produces champions. We are the Baymen-mighty, mighty Bay- men! Under the direction of a fine coach, Mr. Pepe, this year's basketball team had a good season. Since most of last year's players graduated, Mr. Pepe had to re- build a powerful basketball team. The Varsity team steadily improved, and, by the end of the season, our frisky five were playing superbly. One of the big games this year was the Floral Park game. Losing this game cost us the North Shore Division lV championship and tied us with Locust Valley for second place, A coin was tossed to determine which of the two would occupy the division's second place berth. Unfortunately, we lost the toss. Although Oyster Bay did not qualify for the county playoff, this year's team will be remembered for its spirit and teamwork. Special credit should be extended to Rocco Ronaldo and Mike Taylor. These two seniors led our team to victory many times. ln addition, we must give credit to two freshmen, husky Bruce James and agile Leander Willetts, and to frisky sophomore, Don Lowe. With these boys, along with several others, next year's team promises to be a very successful one. 's-at t - 4513 Jw ' ' . ' L ' , P 5 Aus tint! . Many hours of rugged practice are required of the boys who go out for Cross Country. Besides the fine spirit that the whole team demon- strated, two individuals displayed highly commendable ability. Henry Curran, who was undefeated in Di- vision IV, set a new O.B.H.S. 2.5 mile record. He took fifth place in the Nassau County Championships and was also one of the top ten boys who represented Nassau Coun- ty at the State Intersectional Cham- pionship Meet. Tom McCarthy, al- ways coming in right after Henry, averaged second place in Division IV and was first alternate on the county team. Although Tom gradu- ates this year, our team will still have Henry to help spell V-l-C- T-O-R-Y. i it Xxx ...xl X- S , W: SMR 35 C wi li H il. --.nn -. xi ,. Second row: Donald Lowe, Curtis Velsor, Casimir Rogus, Richard Rose, James Parr, Neal Nanzetta, Art Cheshire. Even though our track team was short of boys, its effort and endurance helped to win the North Shore Medley Relay Championship. In so doing, it broke a school record with Tom McCarthy running the half mile, Tony Kabel- ka, the 220 yard sprint, Donald Lowe, the 440 yard sprint, and Henry Curran, the mile. Henry, an outstanding runner, set a new school record for the mile: 4:37.3. Also re- ceiving medals for fourth place in the North Shore Championships and fourth place in the Nassau County Championships, he has shown exceptional skill. Credit should also be given to Casimir Rogus, who took first place for the shot put at the Novice Meet. We congratulate all the boys and look forward to a young and excit- ing team next year. .. s VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM First row, left to right: Chuck Sherr, Peter Murray, Peter Olsen, Paul Collins, Louis Di Gennaro.
