With this group were three chaperones, Miss Campanaro, Mrs. Manser, and Mr. Grady. The hrst important stop was made at Annapolis, Maryland, where we had lunch and made a tour of the famous Annapolis Naval Academy. Late in the afternoon, we made our next stop- Washingtcmti and the Hotel Carlyle. Wfe were tired but keen-eyed with anticipation as the background began to reveal the pictures on postcards and in history books. In the evening, the group split up to accommodate those who preferred to go swimming, to attend the movies, or to do some sightseeing. ? Tomb of lbe L'nknou'n Soldier x ak? 4? Tuesday, April 5rd, found us hungry for food and sights. After satisfying our hunger for food, the Parker Tour Service set about satisfying our hunger for sights. XVe started immediately after breakfast with tours through the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court Building, the White House, and the Capitol Building. After eating a hearty lunch, we toured the Franciscan Monastery, which is located outside of the city limits of Washing- ton. Then our buses sped us back to Washington, where we visited the Washington Monument. Full of pep, we walked up the 898 steps of the monument. Many even walked down the steps, while others took advantage of the elevator in the monument. After dinner, we boarded a large excursion boat for an enjoyable moonlight cruise down the Potomac River. On the boat, we met and chatted with students from many different schools. The morning of April 4th found us wondering what else there was to see in Wfashington. We soon found out. Beginning early in the morning, we toured the Pan American Building, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Smithsonian Institute. In the after- noon, we rode to the Arlington National Cemetery to witness the very impressive changing of the guards in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We continued our touring by seeing the Marine Corps War Memorial, which is the newly erected Iwo Jima Statue, and Mount Vernon, George Washington's home. That ni ht we were entertained at the Lotus Ni ht Club 8 i ' 8 by Alan Dale, the well-known recording artist. Room parties followed, then packing for home, and last, and probably least, sleep , Lincoln Memorial VQTYFQ' is fi Early Thursday morning, April Sth, we left Washington and began our journey back to Oyster Bay. On our trip north- ward, we stopped at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to see the electric map depicting the Battle of Gettysburg and to tour the Gettys- burg battlefield. After a brief stop for lunch in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, we once again sped northward. At eight o'clock the trip was officially over, unofficially it will never be over, because the photographs we took, the friend- ships we made, and the fun we had will keep the trip alive. Many thanks are due to our three chaperones, who contributed greatly to the many happy memories we have of Washington.
