T. A. was organized in Feb- ruary, 1948, and this organization was named after the late Gardner Shugart. The club is composed of 16 boys and girls who expect to be- come teachers. The officers are: President, Shirley Roweg Vice- President, Kay Dennisong Secretary, Sue Henryg and Treasurer, Pat Ogden The Photography Club The Photography Club is concerned under all lights and condltions with various kinds of equlpment Each member attempts mastery of the darkroom techniques which include the developing and printing of plc tures The scientific and artistic background of photography is also studied -f primarily with the taking of pictures 4 4 - g - - - - FQ THE NATURE CLUB The Nature Club's project is to beautify the school grounds and they have planted grass seed and a few shrubs around the school Blue prints for the landscaping have been submitted by the Extension Ser vice of Maryland Univers1ty's Horticultural Department and the Parent Teachers Association has agreed to help finance the projects THE TUMBLING CLUB During the first semester, this club was sponsored by two students Jack Hohn and Ray Cross. The second semester it was sponsored by Mr. Melson. It is composed of students who are interested in gymnastics. We saw a fine exhibition of their tumbling skills on Parent-Athletic Night. The Eighth Grade Dramatic Club The Eighth Grade Dramatic Club has about Z0 members They produced a play about young Thomas Jefferson called 'The Three Royal R's for the one act play contest They have also prepared several other plays which they plan to give in assembly The1r main purpose 1S to give the members exper ience and self confidence before large groups of people Junior 3-Iigh Choral Club The Junior High Choral Club is composed of girls in the junior high who enjoy sing- ing. Their president is Shirley Havenner. These girls gave an excellent performance at the Christmas Candlelight service. Their sponsor is Mr. Lally. At the beginning of the year nearly all played checkers, but most of the members have turned to chess, which is now more popular. Uy ' ,V THE BAND After much plannmg and many h1gh hopes a band was started at Oxon Hxll thls year Consldermg the fact that 1t 1S new the band has been very suc cessful lt has played at a P T A on the Chr1stmas Program at several assernbhes and at a few basketball games THE SEVENTH GRADE DRAMATIC CLUB The Seventh Grade Dramatlc Club has over 40 members They produced the play Scotch Grace' for the one act play contest Naturally they were very dxsappolnted that they d1dn't w1n They have also done some radio plays whxch they are plannmg to gxve for the seventh grade classes The Sewing Club The Sewing Club of Oxon H1l1H1gh is one in Whlchthe girls enjoy participate ing very much The girls made skirts dresses clothes the most woolens children s clothes and doll The materials used were of difficult types such as plaids and taffetas The sponsor is Mrs Vogel and the President Shirley Critzer ugar and Spice Club The Sugar and Spice Club which was originally called the Cooking Club was organized in September 1950 It is the first girls' cooking club in the high school It gives the girls who haven't had an portunity to take cooking as a subject an opportunity to learn sornething about cooking The Supply Store Each year a group of students, selected for their trustworthiness and sense of responsibility, work in the Supply Store under the direction of Miss Sheridan. S. - 1 Surratts - 2 57 GIRLS' BASKETBALL The Oxon H111 Hrgh School G1r1s vars1ty basketball team s sxx game w1nn1ng streak was broken by Lackey by a score of Z4 Z3 Pr1or to th1S game we had defeated the Alumnl Freder1ck Sasscer Lackey Surrattsv1lle and Gwynn Park 1n two games We then went on to t1e Surrattsvllle 28 Z8 to w1n from Freder1ck Sasscer 1n a mornmg game Our fme record can be accredlted to the fact that we were very well coached by Mlss Moore and that a majorxty of our flrst strlng conslsted of older and more experlenced basketball players In plannlng the offenslve techn1que to be used th1s year 1nd1v1dual ab1l1t1CS were consrdered Theda Mrlstead and Earlamond Stewart were out order to supplement add1t1onal helght to the offense Shrrley Rowe changed over from defens1ve playmg to the for-ward l1ne up 1n the pwot pos1t1on ln wh1ch she d1d a capable Job 1n d1rect1ng the floor play Speed and aggressweness was necessary and Gmger Fawsett performed th1s duty 1n her usual plauslble manner Gwen B1er1y d1d well 1n general floor playmg and should prove valuable next season Strong ernphasxs has always been placed upon the 1mportance of a good defense and thls year was no exceptxon Molly Cleaveland and Ruth Alex ander are consldered old t1mers 1n th1s pos1t1on and as expected d1d an out standxng Job Due to 1llness Eunlce Cochran was not able to JOIH the team unt1l m1d January but her presence was always apprec1ated as scorekeeper and mana ger A Sophomore who performed 1n a superxor fashxon was Rheta Taylor who should supply the backbone of the defense next year 58 . . , , . , . - .l D Y Y .
