very slght of that large group IOIHIHQ together 1n a SCFVICC of devotlon QIVCS us a mental and sp1r1tua1 11ft 1n sp1te of ourselves Another n1ce part about chapel has been the opportun1ty g1ven for everyone to take an actxve part 1n the SCFVICC A great many of us from all dlfferent classes, have taken chapel at one t1me or another, and lt has served to make the serv1ce even more our own To some chapel has been a real help 1n faclng each day to all It has, we bel1eve, become a defimte, 1rreplaceable part of l1fe at Oxford What a blow It was to find at m1dyears that chapel was to be om1tted durlng the anxlous week of exams' As the year draws to a close we begln to real1ze, espec1ally those who are leav1ng Oxford th1s une, how much th1s add1t1on has come to mean to us and how we w1ll m1ss It when we graduate Moreover, chapel represents for us someth1ng wh1ch IS now trag1cally lackmg ln many parts of th1s upset world lt exemphfles one of the great est pr1zes of democracy, freedom of rel1g1on, the r1ght to worsh1p unmo lested as we please We come to loxe th1s freedom better when we th1nk of the mult1tudes who are forb1dden th1s bas1c pr1v1lege When we see the wanton destructlon and terr1ble cruelty bemg comm1tted 1n war torn reglons when we see age old cathedrals blasted to rums, and broken peoples denled the r1ght to worsh1p, we reallze the greatness of the bles s1ng we possess, typlfied ln our short morn1ng serv1ce It would be hard lndeed at such a t1me as th1s to 1gnore these horrors that are go1ng on 1n the world around us However we must th1nk especlally of the t1me when It 15 all over when a mearv battle scarred world must be brought back to normal For our generatlon w1ll have to face the task wh1ch vx1ll be last t1me lt w1ll be hard but at the sarne t1me a great opportunltw and more and more we reallze that the only way lt can be accornpllshed 19 through a real1zat1on and acceptance of God s way We are commg to know th1s and 1n vears to come when we are strugglmg for a better world perhaps we w1ll get added hope and determ1nat1on from th1nk1ng back to the s1mple mov1ng serv1ce held each morn1ng 1n Guernsev Hall The sen1or class of 41 IS leav1ng the portals of Oxford at last What IS It that 11es unknown ahead of us and ahead of any sen1or class? T111 now exerythmg has been deHn1tely planned and ordered for us to do Graduat1on IS the yumpmg off place From now on we are on our own, each g1rl to go her own way accord1ng to her own dec1s1on Qome w1ll go to college and some w1ll rema1n at home, but whatever we do we w1ll meet new fr1ends and have new exper1ences All th1s t1me we w1ll have to be plannlng for ourselves, maklng our own deelslons, and shapmg our l1ves No longer IS someone able to do our th1nk1ng for us In th1s aspect, as 1n many others, Oxford has glven us good tra1n1ng As often as possxble we have had to fend for ourselves So ln the future when we meet crxses 1n our l1ves, come out w1th the r1ght answers, and make successes of ourselves, we w1ll have Oxford to thank for our tra1n1ng and for startmg us out 1n th1s new l1fe on the r1ght foot I . .
