QW' HI: QR N Q H 0 i-TE V' OXFORD HILLS HIGH SCHOOL SEAL The earliest Vikings were cruel and faithless members of Scandinavian bands of sea ravers. They were an adventurous people who were ene- mies of civilization and the science of peaceful co-existence, although many of their invasions led to important settlements and influenced the devel- opment of Europe for many years. The Vikings, who were merciless in killing the defeated and who fought with savage cruelty, had keen qualities of intelligence and imagination which enabled them to learn rapidly from the civilized people and quickly adopt the Christian religion. As civilization entered into the Vikings' life, they eventually departed from their cruel ways and their savage love for destruction, and quickly adopted a vastly new way of life, changing from plundering pirates to civilized traders. The Oxford Hills High School's green and gold school seal is based on the idea that finally de- veloped in the Viking civilization, the idea of peaceful living, cooperation among their fellow- men, and a strict code of honor. The twin Dreki figureheads, facing east and west o fn fx D 55: NURWAv X35 S a s QQ in the center of the seal, represent the twin towns of Norway and South Paris. Forming a semi-circle around the figureheads is the ivy wreath representing the fast growing com- munities and the progress shown in the successful consolidation of two separate schools into one school district, advanced in ideas and ideals. Vertically through the center of the seal is the banner displaying the motto Forward ever, Back- ward never which was chosen by the Student Council to signify the aspirations and ambitions of the student body toward the highest goals attain- able in life. Oxford Hills District High School, lettered iust inside the points, signifies the combined efforts of all toward solidarity. The six points extending outward are symbolic of the challenge for growth in the areas exempli- fied by the cardinal principles of education: health, command of fundamental processes, worthy home membership, worthy use of leisure time, vocation, civic education, and ethical character.
