To thy feet in deep devotion Thankful hearts we bring. Earnest, loyal, always true. We shall ever be; Thus we pledge our heart’s allegiance O.H.S. to thee. “TO EVERYTHING THERE IS A SEASON, AND A TIME TO EVERY PURPOSE UNDER THE HEAVEN. Eccl. 3:1. These are the words of a great Book; they are also the bywords of a great man. To every graduate of Oxford High, to every student who spent any time within these halls, these words are synonymous with MR. H. T. STANFORD “A TIME TO BUILD UP After the war he furthered his education at Florence State College. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Alabama. Later he studied for three summers at Duke University. Tyra, Alabama in Marion County was Mr. Stanford’s first school. There he taught all six grades. “A TIME TO BE BORN Mr. Stanford was born at Guin, Alabama, on October 12, 1896. He graduated from Marion County High School in 1917. “A TIME OF WAR In World War I Mr. Stanford served his country in the United States Army as 1st Lt. ORC. “A TIME TO LOVE From Lamar he went to Russellville in Franklin County, where he met and married Miss Terrell Pace in 1925. His second position was in a four-teacher school, Pleasant Hill, in Lamar County. He was principal for seven years in Russellville and seven more at Bridgeport High in Jackson County. When Mr. Stanford came to Oxford, there were 284 students and 8 teachers. His first graduating class consisted of 36. Through the years Mr. Stanford has been loved by his students, faculties, and friends. He has always been active in civic and church work. For 31 years he has been teacher of the Men’s Sunday School class at Oxford Methodist Church. “A TIME TO PLANT’’ It has always been a pleasure for those around him to see his beautiful garden and the colorful flowers that are always gracing his office. “A TIME TO LAUGH” Besides gardening, he has also had other means of entertainment and relaxation. “A TIME TO MOURN” “Skip” the dog and “Tommy” the parakeet both provided many enjoyable moments. “Tommy” was especially missed because for many years he was a true member of the family. 5 “TO EVERYTHING THERE IS A SEASON . . Times change, young ones start school, grow up, graduate, and leave to make their way in the world. Mr. Stanford watched over, influenced and guided countless students during his 31 years at Oxford. During his last year at Oxford, 1966-67, there are 1375 students and 57 teachers. In 1966 a record class of 202 was graduated. How can one estimate his achievement? Certainly it cannot be done with words alone. A scholarship fund has been established in the honor of Mr. Stanford. Perhaps in this small way a measure of the love, reverence, and admiration that our school and city feels for him can be displayed. Mr. Charles Boozer presents Mr. Stanford with a plaque initiating the scholarship fund. Mr. Authur Hill presented Mr. and Mrs. Stanford a beautiful colored picture of Mr. Stanford. Prophecy Prophecy As I, the Oxford Yellow Jacket, fly over the great city of Oxford, 1 see quite a few changes in this great year of 1977. Oxford High School has a new principal, GREG WILLIAMS, and assistant principal, DOYLE INGRAM. The secretary of Oxford High is DEDE NELSON and SHARON CRAWFORD is the assistant; SHARLOTTE COLE is the new librarian. Oxford High also has some new swinging teachers, CATHY JOHNSON is in charge of Annual Staff and SANDRA NOELL is the new Home Economics teacher. LINDA STORY is teaching P.E. with her able assistant, CINDY WAUGH. I see DONNIE REAVES football coach of Oxford, and ALAN WILLIAMS his assistant; JOHNNY GARDNER has taken over basketball. THEOLYN BOM AN is teaching Typing I and GAYLE CHAPMAN Typing II. HUGH WILSON is the new band director at Oxford and NINA POLK is the new choral instructor. CLIFFORD DORSETT is head janitor. As I glide over downtown Oxford and its suburbs, I see NEWFORD COMBS as manager and owner of the Dari-Delight with the help of WILLIAM JONES, who is chief cook and BARBARA THOMPSON as head waitress. The Dari-Delight also features a live band with ERIC COSPER as the manager. The members arc DON SMITH, LEWIS BRYANT, and DANNY GARRETT. I see a new dentist’s office being constructed in Oxford with ALLAN HICKS as chief construction engineer and helping him are RANDY BALL, LAMAR CRUMLEY, and BOBBY PATE. DAVE ROBERSON is going to be the new dentist with the help of SUE GAULDIN, his dental assistant. Oxford now has its own daily newspaper. Editor is RANDALL CHEATWOOD, co-editor, JAMES HOWARD, and DONALD DURHAM, circulation manager. GREG WILSON has become minister of the First Methodist Church of Oxford and in his congregation I see RAY WEBB. VIVIETTE WALDEN, JAMES WATSON, JERRY ROBERTS, KATHY MULDOON, and families. KAREN McCULLOUGH and SUSAN LEWIS have finally hooked themselves a husband have settled down in Oxford. Also LEONA McCORMICK has finally settled down with one of her many G.I.’s and MARIAN HARRIS has finally persuaded TROY SPURLIN to be her one and only. I see RALPH TURNER is a mechanic at his own service station and PHIL WRIGHT has his own soft drink business and is still a playboy. At the Oxford Concert Hall I see JAMIE McMAHAN and CECILIA GEDGOUDAS accompaning BRENDA BUSBY, LINDA PRESTON, and MARTHA WILSON in a new popular singing group. What is that racket? Up above me I sec the cause, it is TERRY NAIL flying around in his A-22. His co-pilots arc WAYNE BOODY and ROGER GREEN. Who is this I see walking down the street wearing a uniform and carrying a satchel? Why it is JAKIE COBB, now a letter carrier for the Oxford Post Office. Working inside the post office are JAMES BRASHER, JOE GARRETT, RANDY DAVIS, and GUY SPARKS. I see, as I fly over a new suburb in this great city of Oxford, that BILLY BENNETT, DEXTER BINGHAM, TOMMY BRAGGS, HOMER BROOKS, LEON DEAN, and MICHAEL FINN have decided to become family men. Some successful businessmen in Oxford now are GREG FEAZELL, PHIL FEAZELL, and LARRY Mc-CONATHY. Oxford now has a new hospital. Chief Resident is DAVID MAULDING and chief-of-staff is TERRY REAVES. DEBRA GOGGINS, BRENDA BAGGETT, JANE SHEETS, JANE BENTLEY, GWEN KING, JUDY LINDON, AND BARBARA TUCKER are all nurses there. CARLOTTA ABBOTT, GERALDINE ADAMS, ELLA MAE BURDETTE, and MARY COMER are working in Oxford’s day nursery. Two of the less fortunate members of the class, TRAVIS SKINNER and JIMMY RAUGHTON, have jobs with the county road department, digging ditches. Oh well, everybody can’t be successful. ROSE ANN GAITHER and MYRA REEVES are wives of senators and are going to attend a Senatorial banquet tomorrow night. PAT SWANCEY and JOYCE SWANCEY are busy helping their husbands prepare sermons for Sunday. I see all the mothers are showing pictures of their children to everyone. MILDRED PRICE, is very proud of her five boys, and LINDA REEVES and ANN SMITH both have a set of twins. SHARON MIXON, RUBY 46 STEPHENS, WANDA SUGGS, SANDRA COOK, and LANELLE STRIPLIN are all happy housewives. DAVID THACKERY is head chef at the new restaurant in town and BECKY WILSON, PATSY WATERHOUSE, and LINDA WILLIAMS are working ihprf as waitrpssps Down below me I see PHIL WEEMS and STANLEY NORTON racing in the Daytona 500. As I fly on through the clouds, I see JAMES BENNETT driving up to his mansion in his “Toronado.” His socialite friends are DANNY BUTTERWORTH, DEBBIE TRANTHAM, JERRY OWEN, and BELVIA LOU HOUSTON. Some beauties sitting around his swimming pool are LYNN O’KELLEY, VICKI HAMRIC, and SHEILA PONDER. I see JERRY GALLOWAY still playing the field looking for the perfect girl with the help of his friend, MICKEY GAULDIN. I see FREIDA WILDES (Bumgardner) has just finished writing her new book, which promises to be her tenth best seller. Who is that distinguished man sitting in the court room? As I look closer, I discover it is JIMMY BIBLE as Judge and DANNY JONES as chief prosecutor. I see DONNA CODY married with her five children driving her mad even with the help of her friend, SANDRA HENDRIX. PHYLLIS JEWELL finally got married and is helping her husband run their own department store. At this point I fly closer to see STEVE WHITNEY is head of the men’s department and SANDRA JOHNS is head of the womens department. As I fly over Anniston, I see JIMMY PIRKLE, head coach of our biggest rivals with his assistant, WAYNE VINSON. JUDY JACKSON is still styling hair at the Beauty School and BUTCH BARKER now owns the Smoke House and lead pool sharp is RANDY CROCKETT. BECKY NEW, PATTY LEE, and LINDA FOR-BUS are still hanging around Lee’s, but now as owners. SAMMY JENKINS now owns Cooper’s University on Talledega Highway and I see RICKY REAVES finally made it through college after ten long years. As. I stop to take a little rest at my nest, I turn the T.V. on and I see DANNY SHADDIX running for Governor of Alabama and LORETTA WOODS is running against him. JAMES CHEATWOOD is campaigning for State Senator. In the town of Jacksonville, I hear the familiar voice of BOBBY WEST, the new choral instructor of Jacksonville University, and DAVID BUTLER is the Band Director. RANDY HOLMES runs the new Foodtown now; STEVE CHEATWOOD, RUSSELL COTNEY, and DON KNOWLES work for him. As I glide over Hollywood, I am astonished to see that a few of our ole O.H.S. members have become famous stars. JOAN HEWETT is starring in her first movie role, co-starring GAIL ROSAMOND, TIM PITTS, PAT HOUCK, and DAVID PHILLIPS. CATHY NeSMITH is a world famous concert pianist and SHEILA TEAGUE has her own show on T.V. Auburn’s new coach is now JIMMY HUBBERT and watching Auburn play today is DIANE McCURDY, CAROL CLELAND, FREIDA HUTCHESON, and their husbands. MARY ELLEN BLACK is world famous for her dress designing and VECOY MIDDLEBROOK is well-known for her hat designs. LARRY GADDY is a designer of men's clothes. CHARLES MADDOX is one of the bachelors left out of his class. His only problem is thinking of ways to spend his money. AUBREY ADAMS, JAMES GAINES, and MIKE SWAYZE are in the Army. In the W.A.C.S. are MARY JO BONE, CAROLYN BROWNING, JUDY GINN, and TONI HOLCOMBE. EDDIE HARDY, DAN MILLER, TERRY REAVES, JAMES PASCHAL, and WILLIAM MORROW arc officers of the Navy. IRIS HUDSON and REBECCA ANN COXWELL are working at the telephone company, where they can talk plenty. Some of the old maids are PATRICIA GRIZZARD, PATSY LAYMAN, and DORIS McCORMICK. We are still hoping they will find the right one. 1 saw these students when they entered the 7th grade and when they graduated. Now I am seeing them 10 years afterwards. It has been quite astonishing. Now I think I will go and rest before my next journey for the seniors of Oxford High School. 47 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Donna Whitman-Treasurer. Lynn O'Kelley The Young Democrats of Oxford High School were active in politics surrounding last year’s November election. Students worked at the Democratic headquarters in Oxford, passing out campaign literature and contacting voters. The group attended political rallies of candidates for state offices, including Mrs. Wallace's rally in Oxford and Anniston, in which the students assisted in passing out bumper stickers, cards and other campaign literature. The Young Democrats and Young Republicans conducted a successful project of emphasizing “Getting Out the Vote” by soliciting over 6,000 voters to pledge to vote in the November election. Students in the Government class room held a debate on the candidates and issues of the two opposing parties at the state and local level. A successful political rally was held in the school auditorium in which students heard speeches from such candidates as Fred Lybrand, Ray Burgess, Woodrow Albea and Hugh Merrill for positions at the local level. To conclude the emphasis on the election, both political groups watched the election returns together on television in the assembly-room of the school. young Republicans 1st Row—F. Wildes, L. At the very beginning of activities our Young Republicans began passing out literature, placing bumper stickers on automobiles, signing voter pledge cards for many individuals throughout Calhoun County and the state. As soon as Republican headquarters were set-up in Oxford and in Anniston, these students gave their time at night and during the day making telephone solicitations to aid the Republican Party. In October, they held a Republican Rally at the Gym and such men as Pat Shaddix, Doc Pen-dell, Ed Diggs, George Deyo, John Grenier, Forrest French, Jack Wilson, speaking for Jim Martin, and Glenn Andrews, Republican Congressmen from this district were at the rally. Later in the month, the Jim Martin Victory Train was met by a number of the Young Republicans who then journeyed to the YMCA in Anniston for political speeches by the various candidates. Then to complete the activities, Glenn Andrews Appreciation Day was held and around thirty of our Young Republicans attended a dinner at the Anniston City Auditorium to honor Glenn Andrews. The parade featured the homecoming candidates, the Yellow Jacket Band, and a number of cars entered by the various clubs of the school. The Saturday night Pre-Game show featured the crowning of this year's Miss Homecoming Queens. The Senior Queen is Belinda Reed and the Junior High Queen is Sharron Nelson. The homecoming spirit was not dulled by the defeat which was handed to the mighty Yellow Jackets by the Wellborn Panthers. Even though the score was 28-7, we never ceased to show our support for the fighting Jackets. The Key Club sponsored a Homecoming Dance at the National Guard Armory after the game. The dance was a great success and ended our 1966 homecoming events. The Big Moment is approaching! What’s wrong, Cathy? Strutting high!! Happy days are here again. What's David doing in there? Slave day was the climax to the magazine sales by the Juniors to help sponsor the Jr.—-Sr. Prom. Any Junior selling $25 worth of magazines or more was honored to be a master, while all others were slaves. Slaves were made to do odd jobs on Slave Day. They were given jobs ranging from carrying books to washing windows. The homeroom reaching its goal first was given a prize. Top salesmen were awarded prizes, and each individual student received gifts for sales of the magazines. 193 194 Watch that punch,!!!
