1966 ll S choof Staff P 25 en Is Oxford J4ifk Hail to thee, our Alma Mater Hear us while we sing. To thy feet in deep devotion Thankful hearts we bring. Earnest, loyal, always true. We shall ever be; Thus we pledge our heart's allegiance O.H.S. to thee. 2 Mrs. Dorothy Gardner With deepest love and respect, we, the Senior Class of 1965-1966, dedicate our issue of the YELLOW JACKET to our lovely and gracious guidance counselor, Mrs. Dorothy Gardner. In the past five years, she has skillfully handled many of the myriad processes of our school—from orienting freshmen to arranging for College Night. At the same time, she has heard with patience and discreet helpfulness the personal as well as the scholastic problems of a great number of students. Mrs. Gardner's cheerful, friendly disposition, accom- panied by her eagerness to serve well in any way, has made her a highly esteemed and a favorite member of our faculty. Further, many of us have been privileged to know her as an active Christian and as the loving Mother of Mary Lois and Susan. Mrs. Gardner has chosen, as her way of life, to help others. This ideal we have observed her executing daily with unequaled personal courage and untiring devotion to duty. Just to know her is to be inspired to a worthier way of living. 105 Jit h let id f h 151 M, ministration MR. WENDELL ROBERTSON Assistant Principal MRS. LILLIAN WILLIAMS Secretary Guidance MR. H. R. Yellow Jacket and peer into the murky water, a vision unfolds. The time is 1976 and Oxford High School has a new principal, EVERETT LINDSEY. The faculty also has a few members from the class of 66 . I see WILLIAM STINSON teaching Biology and HENRY KWONG lecturing in his Physics classes. The Math Department has a new addition, it is JERRY LACEY. TERRY KEMP is giving a talk to his agriculture class on the use of the hammer as an aid to nail driving. The scene changes and I see TONY PETTUS and STEVE SHUNIAK at Buck's showing the owner, DIANE FANT, their new police uniforms. LARRY BOWERS the curbhop, just went outside to answer honks by JERRY CHRISTIAN and BOBBY JONES. As the vision moves along the highway, I see SAM MELLON as the owner of the Esso Station and MIKE LE CROY as his assistant. Across the highway at the Esquire Inn is the owner, JEANNIE GALBREATH, with JUDY HANKS, her head maid. Judy's assistants are ANNIE GOLDEN and SHIRLEY GAINES. FAYE GOLDEN is now head waitress at Howard Johnson's and DAVID CROUCH is the Maitre De. LINDA CHEAT-WOOD and PAUL WEEMS are enjoying lunch there with their children. The Dari Delite is now a big hangout and is complete with a band. BILLY PATE, JACK WILLIAMS, and JERRY EDWARDS are band members. On the dance floor is BILL WALKER and NANCY THOMAS dancing to a slow song. DARRELL HARRIS is the owner, and DON WATERHOUSE along with GARY WAUGH are his bouncers. DONNIE NEWTON is a pharmacist at the Calhoun Drug Store and REBECCA NORRIS is in the cosmetics department. Over at the Jitney Jr., JOHNNY OWEN is in charge with JIMMY PETTUS as his assistant. The beauty shop is owned and operated by BETTY TURLEY with her beauticians, LINDA KIESTER, ELAINE BOWEN and JUDY FIELDS. KAY RINEHART and BARBARA HAWKINS just zoomed by in Kay's new Sting Ray. I see why now, because there go PAUL HOWELL and KARL HOOD, now highway patrolmen, in hot pursuit. MERLE TURLEY and HAROLD DOWDNEY, successful businessmen, are watching football practice at the stadium. The visions begin to fade and another scene appears. It is downtown Oxford, now a large, booming metropolis. There is CHESTER PHILLIPS driving one of his thirty-five taxis. Over at the First State Bank, JUDY HATHORNE is now a secretary to the bank president, HAROLD MATHIS. The new movie theater in town is the Globe owned by TERRY HENDERSON. The movie now showing stars LINDA TURNER, LANA DIAL, and KEN GEDGOUDAS. For a bit of culture try the City Auditorium, where MELDA LITTLEJOHN, GEORGIA WILSON, and LARRY MORROW are playing with the Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by JOHNNY COLEY. Country singers DAVID FOWLER and WAYNE HORTON are to appear there next week. A now famous actor, WILLIAM ROBERTSON, is now in the starring role as James Bond, agent 007. There on the corner are GAIL PUGH, ELIZABETH PRATER, and SANDRA WHITTINGTON with their children talking over old times. At the new car lot are MIKE HAYNES and WILFORD LANE, now owners of the Chevrolet dealership in Oxford. BENNY LOCKRIDGE is now a salesman there. The new General Hospital is really growing. The chief resident is RANDY OTWELL. GEORGE MIZZELL and CLAY ROBERTSON are well-known doctors, also. Dr. MARTHA SWIFT is caring for the newborn babies and nurses PAM REBO and CHERYL VINSON are assisting her. I see LINDA MASON has just returned from a cruise around the world with her husband. She is talking to SHARON DUNSTON and DIANNE DURHAM about the trip. ALBERT SMITH and JOHNNY SCOTT own the lumber company and manufacture furniture that is sold at KENNETH McGEE'S new department store. At the post office is Sgt. MORGAN ABERNATHY, the Marine Recruiting officer. ROBERT BOODY is in the postal service along with WAYNE EDWARDS and RONALD CLARK. The vision fades from Oxford and a number of visions appear all over the world. There in Paris are DANNY NEW and SUSAN WILLIAMS, now married. Danny is a news correspondent for A.B.C. News. In downtown Paris an American dentist and his wife are walking along. It is TONY SNABLE and ANDREA LIPHAM Snable. They are on a holiday in Gay Paree! I see in an antique shop PATSY CHARACTER, now a noted dealer in exotic antique furniture. Paris seems to disappear and merry old London, England is in view. LINDA ANN and LINDA LEE ADAMS are appearing in London this week in their own fashion show review. I see a red-headed Bobbie on a bicycle, it looks like ANTHONY COFER, but it couldn't be, or could it? An American singing group the Finks are playing at a local pub. The band members include MARK McWILLIAMS, DONALD REED, STEVE ROBERTSON and DALE HARRIS. The vision leaves London and returns to the United States, just in time for LARRY YOUNG'S first touchdown of the season with the New York Jets. In the stands is his wife LINDA POSEY YOUNG. STEVE DUNKIN Bronco linebacker, is playing against Larry today. In the stands watching the game are housewives DEBORAH DEMPSEY, SUE HOWELL, and DOROTHY BROWN, all with their husbands, for a vacation in New York. RICHARD SMITH is playing pro basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters and is now first string center since Meadowlark Lemmon has retired. Since the scene is in New York, let's look around. There are KAREN BEAN and PAM VINES, both dancers with the famous Rockettes. I see DONALD FRANKLIN is to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show and is an upcoming comedian. MARTHA O'NEAL has made it big as an opera star, along with VICKIE BENNETT. LINDA PURDY is their agent. LOUIS SKINNER is now a stock broker on Wall Street and HERSHEL PETTUS is an investment broker for a large business firm. The vision is darkened and another place appears. Los Angeles, California is the place and the harbor is busy with the bustle of men and machines. I can see STEVE DYSON and TERRY BRICKER working hard in the hold of a ship. 47 The scene swings to the State Legislature of California and JOHN VILE, now governor of that State, is presiding over a meeting. The vision moves up coast to San Francisco and there is LINDA SPURLIN working in an office of a large corporation along with VIRGINIA BOATMAN, LINDA WILLIAMS, and LINDA KIKER. All the girls are secretaries to the executives of the corporation. RONALD ADAMS now has a department store in San Francisco and CAROLYN BURNS is a saleslady there. The swaying palms of Hawaii call to my eyes and the class of 66 is well represented there. At one of our military installations, I see Pvt. ALAN COBB and Captain LEE BOWMAN engaged in the repair of a P.T. Boat. Two Waves are coming this way, they are JOYCE COOPER and PHYLLIS DAY. BARBARA HILTON and JACKIE MARSHALL are working as hostesses at one of the beautiful resorts here. I see LINDA COX by a pool modeling a new bathing suit creation styled by BRENDA DEASON. Around the pool watching the fashion show are ROGER HUTCHESON and BOBBY JENNINGS. JANE LIVINGSTON and SANDRA GINN are also modeling some stunning lounging attire. PATSY FRANKLIN is part owner of this lovely resort. So much for Hawaii. The scene is moving to an oriental look and it is in Japan. In the rice patties I see CHARLOTTE HAZLE and CAROLYN HEISE having a try at the ancient art of rice picking. In downtown Tokyo I see LINDA GALEANO and JUDY GAMEL operating one of the many novelty shops. BRENDA FREEMAN and TERRY STRICKLAND are together on an assignment to Japan from the American Embassy. Japan is fading and the capitol of our nation, Washington D.C. comes into view. It seems a number of our class made it to Capitol Hill. There is Representative DONNA DENSON and Senator GARY DENNEY. I see BILLY CRUMBLY has the job of page boy in the Senate. Our own LARRY GABLE is now Vice-President of the United States. DIANNE JORDAN, LINDA KEY, BETTY LaTASTE, and JUDY OTWELL are taking a break from the household grind and are enjoying themselves in Washington. Over at the new night club BRENDA MATTOX is entertaining a large audience with her new dance the Wally Gator . SHIRLEY MILLER, WANDA PETERS, and KATIE MORROW are now secretaries to Congressmen and JANA McNALLY, KAY NASH, and SANDRA RHODES are all owners of small shops in downtown Washington. Our Capitol has certainly become a home for many members of the class of 66 . The vision again fades and another U.S. city is in view; it is Chicago and I see lawyers CATHI HART and TOMMY HAY talking over a present case. FRANCES HOUSTON and FRANCES HOLLOWAY are salesladies in a fashionable dress shop in town. RONNIE HUBBARD is appearing at a large theater in a piano concert. RUTH and JANE KILGORE are in partnership in a large corporation that manufactures hosiery. Working for them are RONNIE COTNEY, a salesman, and PAT TAYLOR, JUDY VISE, and JANICE WHITEN, all private secretaries. The scene fades and more visions are in sight. There is JOE KIRBY, now owner of the Winston-Salem Tobacco Company, talking prices over with manufacturer PAUL YOUNG. They seem upset about the increase in prices passed by Congress and authorized by KATHY WRIGHT, a Supreme Court Judge. Other places are coming into view and I see LARRY GODWIN and CAROLYN ENDFINGER in a department store discussing old times. There is ROGER GIBBS signing autographs for his many fans. After hitting 75 homeruns in one year, he has become quite popular with baseball fans. PATTY WILLIAMS and PAULETTE MASON are together in a Caribbean Cruise with their husbands. There are BARBARA REEVES and JUDY SAMS surfing in the tropic waters of Southern California. Old Mexico is in sight and the bull fight is underway with matador ED LAND. In the stands are DIANNE HOUSTON, JACKIE BOSWELL, and MARTHA BURT. More visions are in view with Rome, Italy the main sight. JANE DOBSON and MELBA EDMONDSON are together as owners of a bikini factory with models GWEN BRAD-BERRY, DALE COCKRELL, and DARLENE WILLIAMS. JEAN STANLEY is on the Riveria, vacationing after a hectic year in the stock market where she was reported to have really cleaned up the profit. DONNA ALLEN, international playgirl is also on the beach in a stunning bathing suit. DIANE HOUSTON is now a famous photographer for LIFE magazine. She has two assistants, PAT DULANEY and ELAINE CHANDLER. Alaska, the frozen north, is next in view. I can see PHILLIP SIMPSON in a weather control tower calculating the occurrence of future storms and air masses. His secretary is ELIZABETH BEARD and the clerk is ANITA WHITLEY. This cold arctic scene is fading and a complete change is seen. It is the South Seas. RONNY CHITWOOD is skipper of a large cargo ship that cruises to all the islands. He also has a cargo of ladies aboard that are bound for tropic ports, they are JANETTE DAUGHTERY, MARY JO MURPHREE, and PAT REAVES. There under a shady palm tree is a familiar looking person. It is FERRELL BUNN, a prosperous businessman that wanted to get away from it all. There are many sights to be seen now. There is JOY SHROPSHIRE in her lovely home that certainly makes being a housewife a pleasant job. I see many other ladies doing odd jobs about their homes, MARY SIMPSON, JEANETTE SMITH, SONDRA SMITH, and ANN RIDENHOUR. They make such lovely housewives. I now see BARBARA SIMS and MARGIE STREET, both vigorous campaigners for State Legislature, giving speeches to a large crowd. The visions are all going around. There's ELAINE WHEELER doing LOUISE SPRAYBERRY'S hair. Elaine is owner of a chain of beauty shops and Louise is a happy housewife. All the sights are fading now and nothing but black empty water can be seen. Seeing all the members of the class of 66 ten years from now was quite a shock. I think I'll lie down in a hammock and let the O.H.S. YELLOW JACKET float where it may. All those crazy things could never come true, or could they ....?? Sln.ron In 1951 the Yellow Jacket band held rehearsal in the small, dingy room under the old stadium. This room was labeled the dungeon by the band members, and by the new band director, Mr. Jimmy Simpson. Mr. Simpson came to OHS in 1951. During this time a rainstorm in the night meant extra-early rising for Mr. Simpson and the band officers, for water had to be removed from the dungeon floor before rehearsals could be held. One song the band played many times over the years was In The Mood, and this was a motto for band members who were always In The Mood for work that would build a better band. In the fifteen years since Mr. Simpson first came to OHS the band has grown in size, sound, and reputation. In 1956 The band moved from the dungeon to the new, spacious bandroom, and in 1964 restrooms and a new office for Mr. Simpson were added. Due to illness, Mr. Simpson was not able to be with us all year. He is sincerely missed by everyone. Mr. Larry Hicks The faculty and students of Oxford High School welcome Mr. Larry Hicks. He has done a splendid job with the band since Mr. Simpson's absence. Knowing the difficulties of beginning a job in the middle of the year, all here at Oxford congratulate Mr. Hicks on an excellent accomplishment. 108 BAND OFFICERS Shelia Ponder, Elaine Wheeler, Darlene Williams, David Butler, Harris Hand, Albert Smith, Mr. Simpson.
