H. S. If the saying be true that A man never stands so straight as when he stoops to help a boy” then Jack Grizzard stands tall and straight. Coach Grizzard has a way of knowing just what is needed at the right time; whether it is what play to call, or what to say to inspire one of his players. He loves football, he loves boys, and he loves Oxford, for as he has said many times, Football teaches so many things’ and goes on to list sportsmanship, hard work, the ability to rise again, leadership, teamwork, and many others. He has been head coach at 0. H. S. for three years and in these three short seasons has guided our teams to 17 victories, only nine defeats, and three ties. During his first year as head coach we were County Champs, but this season was the biggest and greatest of all for a united effort of Oxford beat the Bulldogs of Anniston for the first time in 42 years and the Jackets finished with a record of 7 victories, I defeat, and 2 ties. For this he was rightfully names Calhoun County Couch of the Year. Coach Grizzard has a favorite saying of Sir Andrew Barton’s that goes something like this: Fight on brave men, fight on. Little l m hurt but not slain. I will lie down and bleed a while but I’ll rise up and fight again. He lives these words and he teaches his players to do the same. To Jack Grizzard, whom we here at Oxford are mightly proud to know, love, and respect, we send our most grateful thanks. Backfield coach Buddy White has much to do with Yellow Jacket football. Highly learned in football know-how he is respected and admired not only by his players, but everyone, for his quick wit and friendly smile. If honors were given for assistant Coach of the Year then no one could better fulfill the title than Buddy White. Ralph Baxter lends his coaching abilities to both our varsity and Jr. High squads and has an admirable way of teaching young Yellow Jackets facts about the gridiron. He develops the Yellow Jackets stars of tomorrow. Gerald Halpin is our new football assistant, serving as YeHow Jacket end coach. After a fabulous collegiate career ot Jacksonville State, Coach Halpin came to Oxford to apply his football knowledge. His able assistance has contributed much to Yellow Jocket success. The enviable qualities that mark Yellow Jacket basketball Coach Jay Dye, make him one of the best known and most liked personalities on our campus. His coaching talents have been shown many times. One outstanding feat accomplished by Coach Dye, one that can be claimed by few, is that he has coached three consecutive teams to County Championships in the three years he has coached at 0. H. S. He has compiled a record of 67 wins and only 20 defeats. This past season he directed an inexperienced squad to a record of 22 victories and 8 defeats, a remarkable season within itself. In the personality category, his accomplishments are just as great, His leadership has been outstanding indeed; his players hold high respect for him in every way. The degree of co-operation between Coach Dye and his players is rarely seen between coach and player. We at 0. H. S. are proud of Coach Dye, and we extend to him thanks and hopes of several more successful seasons. The Oxford High School Band under the direction of Janes R. Simpson is one of the finest marching and concert bands in the state of Alabama. The marching band is fronted by three Color-Guards, a Drum Majorette and eight Majorettes who perform at all football games, parades, and other special occasions. To complete the year the band performs a spring concert which is an evening for everyone. We at Oxford are very proud of our fine band. [ 30 ] Lt. Cheryl Logan, Lt. Carol Dunkin, Lt.
