JAMES LOVETT NEASE He was teacher, friend, and counselor and, for more than three decades, he was an unselfish source of Guidance and inspiration to the faculty and Students of Oxford High School, who found in him one who was more than Conqueror, one who understood, one who permitted no impediment to stand between him and the good life, one who demonstrated the triumph of mind over matter, of soul over body. The song of his life has ended, but the melody lingers on. May the song be recaptured by all who came under the healing shadow of his life, and who heard his song of victory. T201 JEAN YOUNG F.H.A. '56-57: B a n d '53-'58. PROPHECY Well, here it is i968 and things are really happening to me. lm going to New York City tomorrow and some friends of mine are giving me a going-away party tonight. The party last night was a bigsuccess. Carolyn Livingston was happily showing off her new engage- ment ring. Joan Gann Carter looked as lovely as ever in her pretty blue dress. Having three children seems to agree with her. Linda Huling and her husband were there. They just moved into the long, long trailer made famous by Lucy and Desi. Ruby Clay and Gwen Warren were very excited about their new homes. Ruby has an l8th Century mansion and Gwen has an ultra modern home with I5 rooms. Neal Ballard and Eddie Ryder who just opened a law office last week took time out to come by and wish me a nice trip. Jean Young and Janice Turner looked stunning in their beautiful dresses which won prizes as the two most original designs of the year. James Williams came to the party but had to leave early to study. He'Il graduate from Oxford High School this spring. Doris Dobbs didn't dance much. She said her job as chief furniture polisher in Dr. Kirby's office really does make her tired. We served Gail Yates' new potato ice cream. lt won first prize at the World Fair this year. Shirley Johnson says she is still happy being Mr. Grizzard's secretary. Howard Borders and Helen Holley were there. They still go steady. Elva Jean Moss just can't seem to make up her mind. She was showing off her eleventh engagement ring from the same boy. Rex Hiett drove up in a new l968 Studebaker. He's president of the Packard, Studebaker Corporation. Eugene Miller looked striking with his new upper plate. Brenda Bradshaw and her eighth husband looked happy although Brenda does plan to make it an even dozen. Johnny Brown, Ned Landers, and Leroy Gaines couldn't see me off so they wrote a card. They're finally beginning the second semester as freshmen at Yale University. l'm on a Greyhound bus headed for New York, now. The driver, Drew Rhodes, told me that Marlin Hunter, Larry McCombs, and Jerry Pettus also drive for the company. I will try to find time to read Barbara Hughes' Nobel prize winning novel, The Life and Love of an Office Girl, on the way to New York. Picked up a Photoplay magazine at the station and was happy to see that Margaret Martin still has her Snoopy Sue column in it. I looked out the window and saw Billy Batey's dog kennel. I hear that he is quite prosperous. We just passed by the Kwik Chek store owned by Milton Pitts and across the street was none other than Food Town, owned by Fred House. Both had new signs sporting Wayne Foster's picture as Mr. America of l968 . As I stepped on the platform, I was amazed at the people. Commedienne Mary Frances Meharg was there in person after her T.V. debut on Joe Latham's variety show. The famous dentist, Kenneth Harris, heard I was coming and he brought his receptionist, Margie Moore, and his assistant, Shirley Stewart, to welcome us. Gene Daugherty and Larry Hicks were leaving for Los Angeles to play another season with the Rams. Myralyn Walls and Amanda Yeager were advertising their drive-it-yourself car lot. Three models passed by and I recognized them as being Sylvia Matthews, Karen Kirk, and Vir- ginia Dietz. Larry Glass, pastor of the largest church in New York, was there meeting people and inviting them to church. Eddie Shortnacy invited me personally to attend his night club. Peggy Owens and Doris Castleberry were rushing to theory class where they are training to be dental assistants. Dorothy Laney is taking a short vacation, as being librarian at Oxford High is no easy job. On my way to the hotel I bought a New York Times . The first thing I noticed was Alice Cotton's daily column. She has made a magnificent reporter. These are only a few touches of her long column: Frances Moss's manager, Kenneth Henson, has just signed a contract for her appearance in Carnegie Hall. Margie Piedot will also appear on the prog ram. Carolyn Bobo, Gayle Kemp, and Joan Garrett are a big success with their new record, We're Glad, You're Glad, We're Glad. Jerry Marks Produc- tions, which have outdated Walt Disney Production s, has just mentioned that they have a new picture. We wonder what it will be! I see where Billie Anderson and Jane Hamric are opening tomorrow eve- ning in their new Broadway play. Linda Johns, Joyce Barnhill, Peggy Williams, and Phyllis McCain just won Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scout program. fContinued on page 452 l 21 l sv I R--M.:-at- -Q ,. W ,Q 1 -Y M 5 X ws .:. - 1'-. The Y.W.C.A. just hired Doris Hinds as the swimming instructor. Everyone was thrilled with Mar- lene Hinds on her first appearance on Queen for a Day. She took Jean Cagney's place. One of the models on the show was Gail Baker. The front page of the Times was full, too. Bruce Hopson and Jerry Roberts, first men to reach the moon, have radioed that the girls there are really beautiful and they have decided to stay for a while. Jimmy Chitwood and his rock and roll band have just returned from a goodwill tour in Europe. It was a big success. Peggy Montgomery and Frances Jewell have just been caught trying to smuggle four men into the country. Julia Chapman and Virginia Sparks were arrested for aiding the criminals. Bobby Gamble, noted scientist, has just found a cure for the common cold. I'm going to the Latin Quarters tonight. Eddie Buford, George Hatzel, and Frankie Smith are playing in the Bill Lamar Orchestra. Featured vocalist is Roy Barker. On the same program is Audrey Higgins, noted fan dancer. We went to watch some ships dock yesterday and saw Joan Payton and seven little sailors were waiting for her husband who is Captain of the Queen Mary. When the boat docked, Charles Pettus, Pat Patterson, and Gordon Kelley went on board. They will represent the United States in the Glympic games this year. Billy Prestridge was going on a cruise to get away from it all. He owns Ussery Ambulance Service. His drivers are Bob Rogers, Jimmy Parrish, and Jerre Deason. We also visited the World's Longest Ponytail contest. Accompanying Sondra Strickland to hold up h,er 8 foot ponytail were Wanda Spears and Patricia McKleroy. A While at the Empire State Building l saw Juanita Cox and her husband, who are touring the world. On the way home we stopped by the Kentucky Derby where Diane Reed took first prize with her horse, Liver-Quiver. Her stable boys were Roy Cordle, John Dodgen, Mitchell Dunston, and Benny Easterwood. The jockey was Hugh Dodgen, Well, I'm home again! l was glad to hear that Carolyn Gamble has just left for Nigeria as a foreign missionary. I had a wonderful trip and was glad to see everyone doing so well. So this is your private in- vestigator saying-these were just the facts. PATSY JAMES. i 45 i -I - . . C .---,.
