Through your guidance and direction the Yellow Jackets daily plan and lay the foundation for their future living. We sincerely appreciate what you have done for us, and we feel that under the capable leadership of such men as you, we shall better plan and build a better world. THE’STAFF has chosen “the ribbon as the salient motif of this volume, for it represents the “tie-that-binds student to teacher—and teacher to student. As we fling this banner across the pages of this book, may we strive to embed the cherished memories, good fellowship, and friendliness of our SENIOR YEAR at CALHOUN COUNTY HIGH, and may this ribbon lengthen to represent a heritage that will preserve generation after generation at this school. It is the aim of the STAFF to present to you a record of the many activities during the past year—in a school which has played an active part in a thriving town—a town which has played a prominent role in the welfare of our student life by unswervingly backing all our under- takings.—So take this book and ever cherish it. Now, our high school days are over. When we look back at the familiar faces, may we always remember to be “EARNEST, LOYAL, AND ALWAYS TRUE” and do our part in improving and preserving this SCHOOL and COMMUNITY. We recall with pride ou' graduation from the sixth grade and how we came to high school wide-eyed, wondering what it was all about and how we d ever manage to get around in two big buildings. As we became 7's, 8’s, and 9's our spirit grew, and we continued on our way. We began to hold our heads a little higher each year and to think how much more we knew now than we had at first. During these years we lost many of our old class mates, but we gained new ones. These three years of junior high school went smoothly enough with each member acquiring more knowledge every day and building a foundation upon which to construct his learning to follow. Our senior years have been years of study, work, and play. They have, also, been readjusting years, because so many of our G. I s have returned to take up interrupted work. Our teachers and principal have guided us on to right paths and have given us their loyal support in any way they could We have been active in many social and athletic activities, and our class has been recognized as being a leader in both of these As the day of graduation is here, we realize it is an important occasion We have spent proudly our years at Calhoun High and, as we go forward in this fast-moving world, we shall always remem- ber our days here and strive to live up to its standards and principles. Has anyone thought to tell you How much we ll miss our friends That we'll love and remember Until the days of our life shall end? The last time we walked through the doors We turned for one long last look At the ivy-covered wall so fami'iar In our lives; it is the closing of a book So farewell to thee, dear old school If farewell it must be. From the time of the first meeting until the day the final copy went to press, the staff met, outlined a dummy for each page, decided on a cover and a dedication, had conferences with adver- tisers, wrote and re-wrote materials for the pages, had pictures made, and typed endless pages To raise $1800 for the publication of this annual required much work and responsibility -This fell to the advertising manager, Annette Minshew. Bettie Jo Kelley and Jack Blakemore, business managers, kept a rigid account of picture money and annual sales The STAFF ha$ worked hard this year to give you this book We hope it meets with your approval as a resume of 1947 Although the Staff had a late start, an annual has been published which the school can be proud of; however it would not have been possible without the help of all the Seniors; Miss Ashburn's typing class; the Senior sponsors. Miss Sentell and Mrs Cancel, the assistance and hard work of Mrs Butenschon; and the cooperation of Mr Stanford We wish to thank all who have helped us in our efforts. This ends his fourth year in football and he ends with an outstanding record. 0 f JIMMY RUSSELL Co-Captain' Jimmy Russell, co-captain of 1946-'47’s football team, ended with an excellent record. He began his career in 1944, and during this time he has proved to be one of the best broken-field runners in this district. Jackets failed to make their customary showing on the grid- iron in ’47. The Jackets were extremely short of experienced men. The team was light and green, but looked as if they might have a promising season before the first game. After the first game it was apparent that the Jackets would not stack up against the other teams of this district who were composed mostly of returned veterans of invaluable experience.
