CLASS HISTORY 1 i In the fall of 1938, a long green dream- lined plane bearing the class of 'Ll came to land at the airport of United Air Lines of Calhoun County High School. The passengers carried little necessary baggage: some native ability, a few brains, much conceit and more good humor. During our Sr. I year there were many achievements won by students. There were a number of girls who were outstanding in home economics, and among those going to Montevallo who are still in our class are--Marie Carter, Rachel Adams, Sarah Frances Hinds, Alice Wilson, Agnes Hastings, and Lorraine Hulsey. The wheels of destiny took us one step further and we entered our Sr. II year with as much enthusiasm as the year before. The most important event of our Sr. II year was our Junior-Senior Banquet which was enjoyed by 96 Juniors and Seniors. Our junior year closed with each one looking forward to being the degnified seniors of C.C.H.S. This our senior year has been the most en- joyable of all. Our class is proud of the fact that one of our members, Dave Hearn, is a minister of the Christian Church. From our class there are eleven members of the Glee Club, three on the Stinger Staff, and seven on the Yellowjacket Staff. Dan Cupid has played an important part in our senior year. Three, Mary Lois Mynatt, Emogene Dimpeon, and Tommie Barker have married and resigned from our class. Two of the boys of our class, Ralph Woodruff and Joe Adams, have succeeded in finding a match for themselves within our own class, namely--Mary Nell Rut- ledge and Rachel Steen. These four remain in our class to be a graduate of C.C.H.S. Now that we have reached the height of our high school career, and the time has cor part, we bid farewell to our superintej faculty, and fellow schoolmates, and C.C.H.S. where we spent our most glori M LgrraineHulsev Lght of our come_J-.o ♦ __A. PROPHECY One rainy night I was walking down the street in a large city. Suddenly everything went black. When I came to I was in a strange room. Everything looked foreign and there was a smell of incesnse then my eyes focused on an old Chinaman. When he saw my eyes were open, he walked toward me. He said that he had mis- taken me for someone else. He asked me if there was anything he could do to redeem himself for his mistake. I thought for a while. Then sud- denly I thought how much I would like to see my old classmates again. He told me he would grant this wish. He walked across the room and stood before an idol in which a fire burned giving out the smell of incense that I had noticed at first. He passed his hands over the fire and slowly an image appeared. I could see a glittering night club on the Miami Boardwalks with a loage sign over it with the name Smoky Joe and to my surprise who should be the owner but Joe Adams. On entering I saw a curly, black- haired girl. As she turned, imagine my amaze- ment when I realized she was Mary Catherine Boyles, acting as hostess. I was told that Rachel and Joe lived in a pent-house on the longest hotel in Miami. I saw Clarice Williams in Oxford as the owner of a chain of grocery stores. Sara Frances Hinds was the dietician at Garner Hospital. Edward McKim was mayor of Anniston. William Ed Wilkinson was editor of the Anniston Star. Dot Roberts wwned a chain of beauty parlors all over the United States and was living in New York. Fromtis Evins was a real estate dealer in California and had a beautiful home in Beverly Hills. Robert Comer was pilot of a h; port plane for the Eastern Air Lij Grace was the hostess. William Dempsey was an out coach at the University of Alabari Marie Carter was Secretary to Ralph Woodruff was a noted architect in Atlanta and Mary Nell was his Secretary. Kphey lived in a moderniste® house that Ralph had designed. Douglas Kirby was playing the part of Rhett Butler with Vivian Leith’s daughter in Gone With The Wind. Helen Hanev was getting her second divorce and her husband was suing Earl Billingsley, a professional football player, for Alienation of Affection. Doris Amerson was one of the lawyers. Johnnie Belle Decker was a dancer m a cafe. James DeArman was teaching dancing at Arthur Murry’s school of Dancing and one of his most promising pupils was Margilou Smallwood who had taken Grade Allen's place on the radio. There was great rivalry between Jack Garrett, Railroad President, and Frank Martin, Head of the Greyhound Bus Company. Alice Wilson and Marie Stewart had an apartment together in New York. Alice owned a Ladies Ready-to-Wear Shop and Marie sang with an orchestra. Due to over work as Probate Judge, Lamar Nolen had as his doctor John Third. Frances Mint® was a representive in Congress and was seeing quite a bit of Dave Hearn, who was now a Senator. Betty Thweatt was a noted dress designer_ with her models featured in the leading magazines. Tiny Hastings had made quite a name for herself as an interior decorator. Donald Alverson was a broadway producer featuring Lawrence Irving as his star comedian. One of the favorite sports announcers of the season was Harry Dickinson. Betty Nunally who was now a newspaper reporter, had taken over Walter Winchell’s column. Lorraine Hulsey was buyer for the Ladies Sports Wear Department of Loveman, Joseph, and Loeb. Calhoun County High School hadj time librarian and who should it b Martha Sue Chitwood. ij Cl J.
