of Oxford High School Agricultural building, completed in 1956. Main Building, built in 1921. Si- th Grade Building, formerly the Industrial Arts Building, completed in 1939. Home Economics Cottage, built in 1937. In 1917 crowded conditions at the Graded School on College Street necessitated a reorgani- zation of the grades. The high school grades were then placed on Williamsboro Street in the Cooper building, which has been tom down. In 1921 the present high school building was con- structed on the Venable pro perty of Williams- boro Street. Since that time, the Home Econom- ics Cottage, Industrial Arts building, gymnasium and agricultural building have been added to the school. Foreword “Oxford, dear Oxford High!” These familiar strands will long be embedded in our minds and hearts. As you turn the pages of your Nineteen- Sixty Three OXONIAN, I trust that you will find many enjoyable hours and pleasant memories re- corded on these pages. I wish to thank the annual staff and our ad- visor, Miss Kay Mills, who have given tirelessly of their time and efforts to produce this annual. With these facts in mind, I now present to stu- dents and faculty of Oxford High School, your 1963 OXONIAN. The Editor Gymnasium, built in 1948. Dedication The OXONIAN STAFF of OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL dedicates this year book to a member of the faculty known to all. As a token of our appreciation of him whose interests are one with ours, whose friend- ship is genuine, whose patience is long suf- fering, and whose unstinted service and loyalty are ever an inspiration, we dedicate the Nineteen Hundred Sixty-Three OXON- IAN to our principal, MR. BRUCE FRANKLIN SLOAN. “Most men work from sun to sun, but a prin- cipal’s job is never done.” 3 School Days at Our FACULTY advises and instructs us in all phases of school life .... Page 7. Secretary JUDY HART . Vice-President CHARLES PEED . President As my classmates march solemnly down the aisle to the familiar strains of “Pomp and Circumstance, ” they seem changed somehow. For graduation means many diings: It is the fulfillment of four years of studies, wor- ries, hopes, and fears. It is the end of childhood and the beginning of life in the adult world. At graduation our roads divide and we are a group no more. Yet we, as the last gradu- ating class of Oxford High School, take with us mem- ories for which we shall be eternally grateful. These memories, of companions and good times, of teachers and exams, of teams and games lost and won, and of countless experiences — the Junior-Senior Proms, the La- tin Banquets, and Friday As- semblies— will be with us forever though we must bid farewell to Oxford High School. She is the younger blond-haired, broAvn- eyed sister of Danny Bowling. She lives on Route II and is a member of Providence Baptist Church where she was crownbearer in the G. A. Corona- tion. Her favorite food is spaghetti and her favor- ite pastime is playing dolls. In being our mascot she seems to be following in her brother’s foot- steps, for he was the mascot of the Class of ’50 in Stovall. Although the Wildcats have lost to Henderson, Northern, Southern, Chapel Hill, and Hillsboro, they have played some very close games and have defeated Oxford Orphanage. Although the team lacked depth in seniors by having only six linemen, Henry Hall, Jerry Willi- ford, Dudley Williams, Jim Floyd, Co-Captain David Currin and, back, Co-Captain Mike Warren, they made up for it with freshmen and sophomores. The freshmen and sophomores, though making mistakes this year, have gained much experience for a bright and new future. Other facts which added to the team’s misfortune were players lost by injuries, center Paul Duffy and guard Marty Yancey. As a whole, with the valuable experience received by the younger players, the team which is to be at the new school has a good future ahead. Baseball Coach Parham is looking forward to his change from coaching track to that of coaching baseball. He has eight retiuming lettermen: David Currin, Steve Piper, Tilden Martin, Vernon Averett, Ben Barker, David Cannady, Terry Gentry, and Mar- vin Averett. The outlook for a winning season also looks good with the lettermen backed by the reserves Bobby Frazier, George Day, Bryson Woodlief, and Jimmy Walker. Basketball The basketball season opened with its new coach, Jim Crain, by winning two out of its first four games. The starting lineup consisted of 6 ft. 1” Marvin Averett and 6 ft. 2” Steve Piper who did a good job controlling the back boards, 5 ft. 10” David Currin and 5 ft. 9” Terry Gentry who were good shots from the outside, and 5 ft. 9” David Cannady who was a good ball handler. The other members of the team were Dann Bowling, Charles Williams, Johnny Culbreth, L. G. Jones, Roger Cottrell, and Rhem Hutchin- son. Because of the short height of the team, a fast break was necessary on offense and a man- to-man on defense to provide added strength. Upon returning from the holidays the team mem- bers were prepared to begin playing its con- ference games. The girls basketball team, under the leader- ship of Coach Patterson, has outlined a successful season. Basketball is practically a new game this year but an improved game. Having lost only two of last year’s players, the Kittens have eleven experienced members on the squad. The team is led by co-captains Linda Sanford and Linda Sizemore along with two other seniors, Judy Hart and Sue Norris; four juniors, Betsy Gentry, Pat Yancey, Nancy Parrott, and Carolyn Creech; five sophmores, Marilyn Tunstall, Dottie Hughes, Betty Yancey, Kathryn Young, and Gail Ashworth; two freshmen, Ann Colenda, and Betty Welch. Track Track is a sport composed of individual events such as the hundred yard dash, the high jump, the broad jump, and the shot put. Track is one sport anyone can play. Oxford High is looking forward to a very successful season; we are expecting points from David Cannady in the sprints, Jim Floyd and Royster Washington in the distance events, and Richard Hall and Dudley Williams in the strongmen events. With this potential and a great amount of work Coach Crain is looking forward to a good season. 102 JUNE HALL ALMA DICKERSON MARILYN TUNSTALL BRENDA CURRIN SHERON OVERTON I Chief Mascot Cheerleaders MARY WELLS RUFF MARGARET JENNINGS LINDA SADLER DAISY HALL BETSY GENTRY JUDITH YANCEY ALMA MARIE WATKINS Boys ' Monogram Club lUL. Always we are proudly singing, While memories in our hearts are ringing Vith thy praise, thy glory, Oxford High; Our love for thee will never die. As we walk through the halls we love so dearly. Forgotten visions come so clearly; And memories will live on through the years. Bringing mixed emotions of joy and tears. The exams we crammed for through endless nights. The “ifs,” “ands,” “huts,” and “mights”; W ' aiting for a group to vote. Or getting a most important note. The last minute rush before the bell. And wishing a fellow student well. Football games we lost and won. And the sock-hops when they were done. This school has set our ideals high. And raised our goals up to the sky. e’re bound to thee by ties unbroken; Sweeter words were never spoken than “Oxford, dear Oxford High.” 144 ' ■.?if ; ‘ ' ’ •v ' l tt ' .)i {■..■?« « ,v‘;r vW aV ' ' !‘ V A V ■ ••- ' ;i V . ’ ' . 4;} i ' . j • : .: •.
