LACALA PATTERSON f' Coach Basketball is a game of fundamental skills and habits, along with good sportsmanship. Coach Patterson has high hopes for her basketball team this year. The team is led by co-captains Annette Cul- breth and Sue Norris and seven girls from last year's team: Girls' Basketball Sue Norris, Lynette Currin, Betsy Gentry, Alma Dickerson, Linda Sanford, and Linda Sizemore. Others on the team are Marilyn Tunstall, Betty Yancey, Pat Yancey, Nancy Parrott, Frances Cham- pion and Ann Sadler. 88 n '- I V, .J , I' , A, Lx' JY mr . VF V, l ,. . ,1 1 t p' -' ' ' ,n .. The O.H.S. Wildcats defeated defending league champs Hillsboro 18-7, Graham 19-O, and Southem 14-13. They tied Chapel Hill 6-6, and Southern Alamance 14-14, while losing only to league champs Roxboro, Northern, Henderson, and Oxford Orphanage. The team scrapped and hustled all the way, proving that desire and determinationi' were all that really counted. Seniors on the team were all-conference guard, Harry Williams, all-conference end, Billy Frazier, fleet halfback, james Dickerson, and line stalwarts, Tommy Cozart and Doug Gresham. Among the other outstanding players were end, David Currin, center, Paul Duffy, honorable mention all-conference quarterback, Picot Frazier, fullback, Mike XVarreng jerry WVilliford, tackle, guards, lim Flody and Henry Hall, and halfbacks, David Cannady, Tilden Martin, and Harry Watts. Other boys who were counted on heavily but were lost to injuries along the way were linebacker, Iohnnie Rigan and center, Sam Currin. Guard, Charles Williams, received a brain concussion in the Graham game, which put him out of action. Still the outlook for next season is very good with nine lettermen returning. Coach Parham and the boys are already looking forward to next season! Trock The boys at Oxford High, under the leadership of Coach Parham, are looking forward to the coming track season with high hopes. Track consist of various events such as the 100 yard dash, and it is unimiue among the sports because the participant is on is own, without a team as in all of the relay events. Meets are planned with the Orphanage, Henderson, Northern, and Roxboro. Counted on for points this year are distance runners Tommy Cozart, Royster Washington, Doug Gresham, and Arch Hicks, discuss and shot men, Paul Duffy and Richard Hall, and high jumpers Al Averett and Ierry Size- more. Sports thghhghm COACH HABIT Bosketboh Coach Habit certainly has his work cut out for him this season. Having lost three of last year,s starters by graduation, he learned before the be- ginning that brothers Billy Frazier, a high-scoring forward, and Picot Frazier, promising sophomore, would be moving away. Thus, Coach Habit pins his hopes for this year on a tight defense, returning starters and co-captains Van Wood, center and very capable rebounder, and Marc Duggins, backcourt whiz and ballhawk. The only other returning letter- man is Jerry Sizemore, potentially a great scorcer. Other players heavily counted on are juniors: Marvin Averett, David Currin, Steve Piper, and Danny Bowling, Sophomore: Tilden Martin, and Freshman: David Cannady. BoseboU Next year Coach Habit's baseball, which had a very good record last season, will place its hopes on an abundance of good pitching. Among the pitchers retuming from last year's staff are Van Wood, a fastballing lefty who also plays first base, Donald Bames, a tricky righthander, and Marvin Averett and Harry Watts both righthanders. Other returners who will be counted on in the race for the district crown include David Currin, Terry Gentry, .Iames Dickerson, Marc Duggins, Mike Warren, Tilden Martin, and Steve Piper.
