In the early days of Rome, the Forum was merely an open gathering place. As the city grew, shops were built about the edges, and temples grew up. Later it was reserved for legal and public affairs, and the shops moved to new places. The Emperors of Rome took pride in ornamenting the Forum with buildings, arches, and Statuary. The School Bus Drivers' Club of Oxford High School is composed of boys and girls who drive our nine school buses and their assistants. The purposes of the club are: to promote harmony between driver and administration, State Highway Patrol, and maintenance department, to promote safe driving, to discuss problems of drivers, to promote cleanliness of busesg to regulate bus schedulesg to regulate problems of overloading, to promote more practical routes. The team defeated Scotland Neck by a score of 28-0, while losing to Roxboro 34-13, Chapel Hill 19-7, Graham 14-13, Northern 32-7, Oxford Or- phanage 6-O, Hillsboro 13- 6, Henderson 6-0, Southern Durham 13-7 and Bethal Hill 13-6. Despite our record for this year, the team is looking forward to being a con- tender for the 1959 District III crown. C0-Captain Wilbur Longmire was honored by re- ceiving a berth on the 1958 District III All-Conference team. This team is selected by the coaches of each school and it is quite an honor to be placed on it. This is the fourth year that Oxford High School has placed a boy on this squad. The 1959 WVildcats will be clad in new uniforms which will feature cardinal helmets and pants, with gray jerseys. Best of luck to these boys! TRACK The track team, Oxford High Schoolis newest sport, finished the 1958 season by losing only one meet. In a triangular meet between Oxford Orphanage, Roxboro, and Oxford, Oxford won second place. We defeated Southern Durham, Oxford Orphanage, and Henderson. Several boys were lost by graduation, however, the fol- lowing lettermen, who will retum, are looking fonvard to a winning season: Charles Belcher, Wilbur Longmire, Ioe Wheeler, Finley Iohnson, Calvin Hester, Roy Dean, Donnie Hawks, Bobby Finch, Carland Talton, Ray Willi- ford, and David Norris. Each boy may enter three events, which are as fol- lows: 100-yard dash, 220-yard dash, 440-yard dash, mile, shotput, discus, broad jump, and pole vault. The track team is directed by Coach Iohn Parham, who has been given much credit for organizing track throughout the District III Conference. Although the schedule for 1959 has not been published, we are sure that this team will represent Oxford High School in an excellent manner. BASKETBALL The 1958-1959 Basketball team, led by Co-Captains Edwin Knott and Charles Stovall has started this sea- son off with a bang! Un- heard of for the past three years, these boys have .made quite a name for themselves by defeating such teams as: Oxford Or- phanage, Fuquay Varina, and defending champion, Craham. However, one of the greatest thrills of the year came on january 7, 1959, when these boys trounced arch- rival Henderson by a score of 50-31. Under the guidance of a newcomer to Oxford High School, Coach Al Habit, the team has acquired a new and vigorous desire and determination to win. The team includes Seniors, David Ford, Edwin Knott, Wilbur Longmire, William Lytton, Charles Stovall, juniors, Charles Belcher, David Norris, Ray Williford, Bobby F inch, Sophomores, Billy Adcock, Harper Ruff, and Billy Daniel. We hope that this team will keep fighting and stay in the winning bracket! BASEBALL The 1959 Oxford High baseball team, led by Cap- tain David Ford, is looking forward to a winning season. Returning lettermen will be as follows: Harper Ruff, Iimmy Frazier, Billy Daniel, Jimmy Parrott, Ray Dicker- son, David Ford, jessie Currin, Bobby Grissom, Billy Elliott, jimmy Hester, Cas Spencer, and john Critcher. These boys, along with other boys coming up from the Pony League, will comprise the team. Oxford High School will face such teams as: Oxford Orphanage, Henderson, Northern Durham, Southem Durham, Hills- boro, Cary and F uquay Varina. Last year these boys had a winning season under the direction of Coach Roy Smith. This year the team, directed by Coach Al Habit, will play its home games at the Oxford Recreation Park. At the end of the year a Most Valuable Player award is presented to one of the players selected by his fellow teammates. Last year'S winner was jackie Bames. This award is presented at the annual V.F.W. banquet for all sports.
