The last few years, different covers have been tried with colors other than red and black. With the theme of “Wildcat Country”, we’ve gone back to the basics. The purpose of the ’83-84 yearbook is to cap- ture the special memories of as many people as possible. Everyone has different interests, and we hope we covered a large amount of them. The yearbook staff hopes that this traditional book will capture the best of the 1983-84 school year and will be enjoyed by all. Below — Support your Booster Club. Oh, yes, we do! It all began on Oct. 12, 1983, at 5:30 in the morning. Dooms Day! Or at least that was probably what the Freshmen girls thought. As they were being led to the cars of their big sisters, they were probably wishing they could still be in their nice warm beds. After picking up their little sisters, the Seniors took them to Winfield where they proceeded to initiate them. Some of the stops made were Southwestern College, some went to Quick Trip and the Daylight Doughnut Shop. After everybody had taken their little sisters to the different places, the Seniors then treated their little sisters to breakfast at Hardee’s. While at Hardee’s the Freshmen were dressed as babies, they received quite a few strange looks from the customers. When everyone had been dressed accordingly, the Seniors took their little sisters back to Oxford where the freshmen received the same kind of treat- ment at school for the rest of the day. The freshmen, as well as the Seniors enjoyed the day. Most thought it was fun. It will be a day remembered by both, Freshmen and Seniors girls for a long time. Oh initiation day, Becky Woods really gets with it while hugging and kissing the flag pole. Jeff doesn’t quite know what to think. IT ALL??? A After lunch the girls formed a chorus line and sang “We Love You Seniors.” ◄ Seven freshmen girls go to lunch on initiation day dress- ed for dinner. 13 Baker, Mike: Chorus 4; Oxfordians 1. Band is before school, but the members are still given a credit for it. Even though they have to get up earlier to be there it has worked out quite well. The band is combined of high school and eighth grade students. The band has 30 members, which is up from last year’s 12 members. It was really nice to see the OHS Band marching in parades again. After not having a marching band for two years, it was a welcome sight. The band also performed one half-time show. Mr. Banks has done a nice job with the band. The 1983-84 Lettermen’s Club was composed of eighteen members. Their sponsors were Dave Hunt and Ralph Abston. The Lettermen’s Club did the usual money raising projects. They had a can smash at the Watermellon Feed and they ran the concession stand for Jr. High games. As the time this was written, we asked Coach Hunt what they were going to use the money they had raised for. He told us they would probably have a par- ty and also use some of it for weight room equipment. The FCA has two sponsors, Roberta Hinkson and Bill McReynolds. This year FCA tried selling fruit, but did not have as much success as the previous year. The meetings include, playing basketball or volleyball, reading the Bi- ble, singing songs and praying. It tries to bring young people closer to God. FCA has been going, at OHS, for four years. The Kayettes collect money for different foundations, sing carols at Riverview Manor, sell car- nations, have a Mother-Daughter Banquet, and a new thing this year, a Daddy-Daughter Date Night. It turned out to be quite successful. The Kayettes is one of the largest organizations at OHS. It has always had a large amount of participants and it will hopefully do just as well if not better in the future years to come. This was the last Mother-Daughter Banquet for the Senior girls of the Class of 1984. ■ Junior and Senior Kayette Members: Top row, Michelle Deyoe; Shari Janzen; Pat Starlin; Kathy Jones; Tammy Hayden; Michelle Hickman; Roberta Dennett; Carol Campbell; Sheri Prochaska; Anissa Johnson; Miss Lohmann (sponsor). We went to Scholastics and Jim Ballard won an award. We also went to the West Elk Art Invita- tional where Jim Ballard won the Consul- tant's Gold Medal and the Teacher’s Award. He won all his awards in Charcoal. All these kids deserve a lot of credit. Tulsa looks through a magazine for an idea of what he could draw. 38 OH NO! What have I done? SPEEEfl DRflMfl Speech class, taught by Glayda Wilcoxen, undertakes many pro- jects throughout the year. Besides doing different speeches in class, they also put on plays for the public and some students participated in League, Regional, and State speech contests. All the people who competed in the contests did a good job. Those who received a I rating at State were: Shari Janzen for her Prose reading and Michelle Deyoe for her Original Oration on Love. On May 15, the Speech classes presented four plays. This year's plays were High Wind On The Prairie, Sudden Riches, Gradua- tion Address,” and “The Eyes Have It. Glayda Wilcoxen also is the coach of the High-Q team. They par- ticipated in several meets this year. League Speech Contest Participants: Top, Dana Barton. The Student Council consists of the Presidents and representatives of each organiza- tion and class. The Student Council sponsors the Homecom- ing dances and the Christmas dance every year. The Student Council also collected canned and staple foods, at Christmas, for the people that needed it. The members of Student Council are the leaders of the school and set examples for the rest of the students at OHS. The members of the Stu- dent Council did a good job. The sponsor of the Honor Society is Mr. Ira White. Being a member of Honor Society is quite an honor. But it is a lot of work. The students have to keep their grades up, in order to stay in the organization. Honor Society Members: Top row, Sheri Prochaska; Ray Cole; Michelle Hickman; Dan Metz; Rodney Clark; Rick Jenkins. Second row, Penny Cooper; Sandy Bain; Denise Woods; Shari Janzen; Roberta Dennett; Michelle Deyoe; Russell Clark; Justina Young. This year the number of Cheerleaders increased. Instead of four there were six Varsity Cheerleaders. The Cheerleaders did a very good job. But being a Cheerleader is a lot of hard work. They put in quite a few hours of practice. Plus they go to camp during the summer. After they get home, they practice the cheers they have learned at camp. But they all agreed it was worth it. This year the Pep Club had a new sponsor, Kristen Rash. The Pep Club sold buttons and had a dunking board at the Watermelon Feed, to raise money. The Pep Club also gets everything organized for Football and Basketball Homecoming. The Cheerleaders for the 1983-84 season were as follows: Top, Kenna Kendricks; Julie Turner; Sandy Bain; Justina Young; standing, Sandy Farha and Shari Spatz. 44 HEY WHflT!!! Head coach was Roberta Hinkson and assistant coach was Sherry McCreery. When asked about the season, Coach Hinkson said, I felt very fortunate to have the team I had to work with. It was a very young, inexperienced team, but the girls were willing to work hard to gain some high goals. Most of the starters will be seniors in 1984-85, and it should prove to be an even better year. I would like to thank Sherry McCreery for assisting this year and doing a great job with the B-team. We all wish our only senior, Vicki Saunders, good luck with her future plans.” The hard work and difficulties of the season paid off. When it was all over the girls had won 3rd in the League Tournament, League Champs, and Sub-State Runner-Up. Two girls, Keitha Adams and Michelle Deyoe, were awarded All-League. The team finished with a 17-8 record. Above: Vicki punches the ball over for a quick save. After losing every home game the previous year, it was quite satisfying to turn the program around and win all the games played on our own field this season. Oxford placed second in the league, was the District 9 Champions, and lost a hard fought game to Garden Plaine in the State playoff system, compiling a 6-4 record. Coach Hunt credits the improvement to the players hard work and the help from assistant coaches David Kehres and Ralph Abston. When asked about the ’83-’84 season, Coach Kehres had these comments: “The girls had a very fine season ending up with a 18-3 record. The girls once again won the League Tournament. Two girls received outside awards — Keitha Adams and Michelle Deyoe. I know everyone will miss Vicki, she served a very important role on our team. I would like to express my thanks and praise to everyone on the team and also to Coach Rinehart for all of his help.” The girls ended the season with Sub-State Runner CJp in a disap- pointing loss to Moundridge, 44-42.
