1983 WILDCAT EXPLOSIVES Oxford High School Oxford, Kansas 67119 Dynamite Seniors.........6 Fuses (Underclassmen)...17 Sports Blast............28 Organizations Fire Up...44 Future Fuses (Jr. High).62 Little Sparks (Grade School] . 76 Fallout (End of School)..86 WILDCATS... Wildcat Explosives!?! That's right! For years and years the Wildcat annual has portrayed the Wildcats as just that; the Wildcats. The annuals of past years are full of photos of activities and people. Bur as time goes by the memories of these fun- filled rimes seem to fade and it becomes hard to distinguish one year from another. The coming and going of new students and the graduating of old friends adds to the haziness of the retrospection. But this year the goal of the yearbook staff is to show how explosive we Wildcats really are. This yearbook is intended to provide lasting memories for everyone at OHS. For each student, very special memories exist at school. The football gomes that were so enthralling you forgot the cold, basketball tournaments that left you hoarse from yell- ing, doss parties where someone olwoys forgot something, senior and spring ploys in oil of their hilarity; each of these and many more things are experiences that make o per- son's high school years their most memorable years of oil. Clash Day was obviously represented by most of the high school in November. Here, Sheila Cooney, Shari Jonzen, Michelle Hickman and Joan Voge reveal their true tastes. Penny Cooper decided to keep clean of the nonsense. mm,-- Anlssa Johnson and Julie Turner join in the fun of clash day. 2 Chris Deyoe (senior dash king), Eloine Neises, Julie Kilts, Troy Russell, ond Morsho White. Michelle Deyoe doesn't olwoys dress like this, but she did on Clash Day ond she won o prize os the best sophomore Clasher. 3 CO EXPLOSIVE! Hopefully, somewhere in o book this dynomic, spedol remembrances of each person’s experiences and ac- tivities will be captured forever in print. So now, we, the Oxford High School Annual Staff, pre- sent to you, the leaders of tomorrow who will moke this world more dynomic, our annual: The Wildcat Explosives. A year's supply of dynamite memories guaranteed to blow your socks off! Caught by surprise. Wednesday, October 13, was a day the freshmen of 82-63 will remember for quire a while . .. Initiation was in full swing. For the girls, the day started at 6:00 A M. The seniors picked their little sisters up and took them to breakfast ot Kelly Sforlien’s house. Breakfast consisted of scrambled eggs, frozen fruit salad, cinnamon rolls, and orange juice. After breakfast the seniors dressed the freshmen up in baby’s clothes. Some of the seniors rook their little sisters to Winfield before school, and others just goofed off around town. The senior and freshmen boys met in the boys' locker room at 8:00. The seniors then proceeded to dress the freshmen up in women's clothes. At noon, the lunch crowd was entertained by o mole-female chorus line singing We Love You Seniors. Outside, there was kissing the flagpole, leapfrog, and pushups. The general feeling about initiation from the freshmen was that it was fun ond messy. The seniors enjoyed it, agreeing that the freshmen were good sports. Four freshmen push pencils over the rumble strips with their noses. 12 Just to be in high school. When asked what he thought of this year's season, Coach Shaffer said, We hod a good year. Everybody, varsity through junior varsi- ty, showed improvement all year. They had good attitudes and were willing to work hard to hove success. The girls had good records. We weren’t picked to finish in the top four of the league, ond we finished second. Thor's pretty good. We should be rough rhe next few years because we hod a good group of junior varsity players. This was Cooch Jacobs first year coaching. She was a little nervous. Her comments on the season were, It was scory ot first because I didn’t know what I wos doing. I leorned a lot about volleyball, and I really enjoyed working with rhe girls. The seoson ended in rhe semi-finols of the Sub-Store Tournament. The girls were beaten by Garden Ploine, which was nothing to be oshomed of because Garden Plaine went on to win rhe rournoment. The varsity girls ended the year with o 17-8 record and the junior varsity girls ended with a 6-4 record. Above - Receiving the trophy for second place in the SCBL Tournament. FOOTBALL WITH WILDCAT FLARE Tackle that runner! Recover that fumble! These were the words you could hear every day after school during foot- ball practice. The new football coach, David Hunt, and the football boys really got ex- cited when o ploy went right in practice. However, the ploys didn't always go right in the gomes. No matter how the gome would end, though, the boys and the fans never lost their spirit. The record this year was 2- 7, but by watching the boys, it was hard to tell that they hod ever been defeated. The team's passing kept them go- ing in a lot of the gomes thanks to Jimmie Catlin, quarterback, and Robert Gill, end. Unfortunately, eight senior boys will be absent from next year's team, bur that will give the '83 team their chance to show their stuff. The boys showed they could be competitive with any team in the area. We were very young and hope that these close games will be a foun- dation for successful teams to follow. The coaching staff was very happy with the attitude and desire shown throughout the season. We ore very optimistic about the outlook for the future. Since your senior year is your best year in school we thought that the seniors needed a special section of the yearbook devoted to them. Therefore we developed the senior brag page as a way for the parents of seniors to say something about their son or daughter. There were no limitations on this and we printed ex- actly what we received. Although we didn’t have much par- ticipation this year, we hope that in the future this can be a tradition that both future seniors and their parents can look forward to. i Kelly came into this world with a bang on July 4,1965. What's their stuff? You name it, and that’s what they do for the year- book. Writing copy, drawing up layouts, etc. etc. . . . Justino Young, the youngest in the group, did a mighty fine job too. Her knock was running oround, getting inter- views ond information for the copy-writers. 102 These ore rhe yeorbook staff members of the 1982-83 school year: (from left to right) Russell Clark, Jim Cotlin. Justino Young, Penny Cooper, Shori Jonzen, Kelly Storlien, ond Shannon French. ... STAFF School wouldn't be the some without it. It just odds that special touch to each school year; the icing on the coke. It's full of excitement, sadness, disap- pointment, enthusiasm, exasperation, and just plain memories. What is if? Of course, it's the Ox- ford Wildcat Annual. We, the staff, hope that Wildcat Explosives will of- fer what you, the students, want most in a year- book. It hasn't been easy. There are lots of respon- sibilities, headaches, mistakes, and the most dread- ed DEADLINES. But we have worked very hard to produce a yearbook that will satisfy the whole stu- dent body. Shannon French and Kelly Srorlien, the two yearbook editors decide to shore the tremendous responsibilities, so they both become co-editors. Here you see the two photographers. Their job is none too easy. In fact, one could never over estimate its importance ond difficulty. They did a fine job. 103 INDEX A A A A A A A Abies, Sharon, 20, 50, 54 Abies, Tyson, 81 Adorns, Keitho, 20, 21, 30, 31, 38, 39, 41, 44, 46, 47, 48, 51, 59, 95 Adorns, Lowell, 79 Adams, Stephanie, 82
