It’s inevitable that history, in some way or another, repeats itself. And at Oxford, the annual Watermelon Feed is one piece of history that has given much pride to the town’s citizens. However, there is a lot more to the Watermelon Feed than meets the eye. In 1890 the Anti-Horse Thief Association Day was begun. It consisted of contests, exhibitions, and the still-popular parade (pictured top center). The highlight of the day was the mock pursuit, capture, and hanging of a horse thief. Some of the highlights of the 1981 Watermelon Feed were (from top, clockwise): Smashing cans with a sledge hammer is a popular booth for the Lettermen’s Club. The high school cheerleaders throw candy to the crowd. Grant Wilkerson is the driver. Coach Hetlinger is a willing participant on a hot day in the cheerleaders’ booth, a dunking board. Kitra Thomas, Miss Oxford, relaxes in the shade before the parade starts. The high band performs the traditional dance-and-pep-song routine. 3
