How do you think the subjects you teach benefit your students? How do you like teaching at Oxford? Mrs. Bales became a teacher because she had always wanted to be. She said, “In general reading, the knowledge of a foreign language helps.” She likes teaching in Oxford very much because Oxford is small enough to know the students and teachers. Why did Mr. Barton decide to teach? “My parents were both teachers and of course they were a big influence. I’m glad they were.” Because this is a farming community, he says that his subjects can be a carry-over in rural business and also they are a start for factory and self employment. Does he like it here? “I love it.” Mr. Hetlinger said that he has always been interested in history. His father had been a history teacher and had lots of history books at home. “History helps students learn about their country and themselves.” Mr. Hetlinger likes teaching here at Oxford because it is a small school and he himself attended a small school when he was growing up. 28

Ms. Hinkson was influenced to teach by her high school business teacher, plus she really likes kids. She says business is important and everyone should be required to take typing because it is so important. Ms. Hinkson has been teaching at Oxford for two years now and she likes it. Mr. Infante taught in Oxford for the first time this year. He decided to teach mainly because of his desire to coach football. Bu he feels that the upper math students should be adequately prepared for their freshman year in college. Teaching here “has been very frustrating at times, but the good has outweighed the bad.” Mr. Littell has taught and coached in Oxford for four years. The 1981-’82 school year was his first year to teach constitution and Kansas history in the high school. He also is the head girls’ basketball caoch, boys’ track coach, and assistant football coach. Miss Lohmann has always liked the subject area of home economics. She feels comfortable with it and says, “I can learn a lot from the students because they share their own experiences.” Home economics “helps in family life and also when kids get out on their own.” Miss Lohmann likes Oxford and intends to stay for awhile. 29
