He is a graduate from Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado. This was Mr. Barton’s third year at OHS, and he likes it very much. He previously taught at Udall for six years. He greatly enjoys fishing, hunting — and, of course, teaching! Roberta Hinkson teaches typing, of- fice practice, business law, business math, and accounting. This is her first year at OHS, and she loves it. “It means getting to be around young people who I can teach and love.” Ms. Hinkson graduated from Emporia State Univer- sity, and has been teaching for three years. She enjoys playing basketball, farming, typing, and rearing Crystal. Her business law class went to see an interesting trial; she enjoys teaching students a new thing, which is what each class does. She is looking forward to next year. Mrs. Aurelia McDaniels teaches geometry, algebra 1, al- gebra 2, and general math. She got her degree from the Univer- sity of Wichita, and has been teaching for 17 years. She has taught in Derby, Lenora, Mul- vane, Maize, and has spent her last six years at Oxford. As hob- bies, Mrs. McDaniels enjoys sewing, traveling, crafts, and working with mathematics. Her retirement plans include re- decorating their house, travel- ing, and part-time tutoring. “My work here at Oxford has meant a lot to me and I hate to leave. I’ll miss all of you.” Mr. Alfred Brown teaches woods 1, 2, and 3, and general woods. Before teaching at Ox- ford, he taught at Lost Springs, Kansas, for 5 years, and at Dex- ter for 10. Mr. Brown has been at Oxford for 15 years. He got his degree from Southwestern College. He enjoys hunting, fishing, and camping; as a re- tired teacher he is going to work part time as a salesman, and re- lax the rest of the time. “OHS means everything to me. I am very proud of our school and want everyone else to be. I have had some good times here, and I like the kids in this school more than anyone can believe. I wish I felt like another 15 years here. Thanks to my shop boys!” Miss Sharlene Lohmann teaches home economics 1, 2, 3, and 4. She graduated from Northwestern Oklaho- ma State University in Alva, Oklaho- ma. Both of her teaching years have been here at Oxford. She remarked that discovering more ways to use the micro- wave oven kept the interest of her and her students. Miss Lohann enjoys sew- ing and cooking. “OHS is small but proud. The spirit that is shown at games is especially great. It’s great to teach in a school where I’m given so much freedom to teach the way I feel most comfortable teaching.” Mrs. Irene McKinley teaches french and english 3 and 4. She also helps with the school an- nual. She graduated from Southwestern College, and did her graduate work at Northwes- tern University, Illinois, and K- State. This is her second year at Oxford, and her 27th year of teaching. She previously taught at Liberal. Her hobbies include reading, writing poetry, cook- ing, sewing and preserving an- tiques. “The smaller class load gives me a chance to get to know students and to offer them guidance and help. The friendliness of students, facul- ty, and townspeople is refresh- ing.” Mr. Bill McReynolds teaches art 1 and 2, and all elementary and junior high art. He graduated from Fort Hays State University, and before coming to Oxford he taught at Haysville Junior High. This is his second year at OHS — some of the more interesting things his students did were stone carving, alumi- num casting, and a trip to Wichita to visit the Indian Art Center and Scho- lastic Art Show. Mr. McReynolds en- joys art and gardening as hobbies. “OHS means a close association be- tween students and teachers. I like the free exchange of ideas in the class- room.” Mrs. Shirley Rush teaches band, chorus, guitar, and elementary and junior high band. She also has stage band before school and Oxfordians. She graduated from Wichita State University, and this is her first year of teaching. Mrs. Rush enjoys travel- ing and music. “The students here show a great deal of interest in the music department. I like knowing each student as an individual.” Mr. Leonard White teaches Kansas history, constitution, American history, and sociology. He is also the head foot- ball coach, assistant basketball coach, assistant Jr. High football coach, and head track coach. Mr. White graduated from Emporia State University, and be- fore his two years at Oxford, he taught at Marion for five years. The sociology class visited the Winfield State Hospi- tal, and the American history class toured the Capitol. He enjoys hunting, fishing, being a coach, and seeing young people participate in athletic events. “OHS is a small high school where you know everybody.” Mrs. Llewellyn Moyer teaches eng- lish 1 and keeps the library in order as the librarian. She received her degree from Oklahoma State University, and before teaching a year here at Oxford, she taught at Argonia. Mrs. Moyer is planning to find a teaching position near the school her husband takes his graduate study from. She enjoys sing- ing, floral design, and being a wife. Her english class did a study on film making and critical film viewing, which was very enjoyable. “OHS means a chance to renew old dreams and goals, make lasting memories, and mature as an in- diviual. This place will be a smile on my face in years to come. I wish I could stay. Thanks!” Mr. Leland Shaffer teaches dri- ver’s education, grade school and ju- nior high physical education, and is head basketball coach in both high school and junior high. He is also head football coach for the junior high. Mr. Shaffer graduated from Emporia University. He enjoys being associated with young people, and likes teaching. Mr. Ira White teaches physical sci- ence, chemistry, biology, and data pro- cessing. He graduated from Southwest- ern College, and has taught at Oxford 17 years. Mr. White enjoys photogra- phy, computers, and school. His chem- istry and data processing classes took a journey to Emporia to observe scientific exhibits. “To me, OHS means associat- ing with south central Kansas’ best kids!” 33 Mrs. Glayda Wilcoxen teaches voca- tional english, english 2, and speech. She graduated from Southwestern Col- lege. This was her first year at OHS; she previously taught at Winfield High School and Southwestern College. Her speech class had fun working on festival projects, and in english they worked on spelling and vocabulary improvement. Mrs. Wilcoxen enjoys reading, sewing, and growing flowers. “I’ve enjoyed this year at OHS. I like knowing most of the students, which a school this size makes possible. I especially enjoyed working with the students in the plays. The oth- er teachers and the administration are great to work with.’ Mr. Monte Wyckoff teaches phys- ical education, health, vocations, and psychology, and is the counselor. He received his BS and MS degrees at Emporia State; he taught for one year in northern California, and ten years in Palos Verdes, California. This is his third year at OHS. His psychology class studied the history of man’s development — the PE class tried aerobics (the boys loved it!). Mr. Wyckoffs hobbies are golf, fishing, and getting Raquel to answer his phone ells. “OHS is everyone knowing one another with very few, if any, strangers. It’s small and per- sonal, and it’s busy with all sorts of activities.” HONOR SOCIETY STUCO HONOR SOCIETY MEMBERS: Mr. Ira White — Sponsor, Brenda Bingham, Marsha White, Lois Neises — Vice-President, Lee Dowers — President, Melinda Hickman — Secretary Treasurer, Diana DUnbar, Connie Barbour, Mr. Barton — Sponsor. 2ND ROW: Sherry Rakestraw, Rhonda Jenkins, Kelly Storlein, Brenda Lemon, Kitra Thomas, Tiffin Sauzek, Kay Sawyer, Shannon French, Grant Wilkerson, Dee Ann Sawyer. This was the Oxford Fellowship of Christian Ath- letes’ first year. What a fantastic year it was! There was a great interest in this new organization, and we opened ours to anyone, athlete or not. The FAC really bubbled over after attending the Spring Mini- Conference in Rock Springs. Everyone that went will agree that it was a life-changing weekend. Tiffin, the Captain, says thank you to all members for making FCA a very real experience. She especially thanks Mrs. Moyer and Ms. Hinkson for their many hours and strong Christian dedication. “FCA is the most important organization a school can have. Showing others that God is really real and sharing His love will bring friends closer together than anything. FCA is off to a wonderful start, and I believe that it will make our school full of excitement — make Go-Go- Going for Jesus an every day excitement. You’ll be in love with the world if you do. The Senior girls de- cided to make a change in this year’s program by having the Junior and Senior boys serve the meal in a little different style. With Mr. Wyckoff posing as Friar Tuck, he chose Jeff Shikles to be Robin Hood with other servers being his merry men. They put on quite a show during the meal. (Those boys sure looked cute in their green long under- wear and skimpy gunny sacks!!) Following the meal, Rhonda Jenkins, Kayette President, gave the welcome, and her mother gave the response. Mrs. Moyer sang a beautiful solo, then the Senior girls sang “The Rose” to honor their mothers. The banquet was closed with the installation of the new 1981-82 officers. 1. The state decorations. 2. The evening began with an ice cream social sponsored by the Student Council. After filling up with ice cream and cake, a visit to the high school would let you see the projects students had worked on in art and woods class. Much time and effort was put into the many pieces of work on display. Next, a pop concert was performed by the music departments. The groups involved in the enter- tainment were 3 4. guitar class; 5. Oxfordians; 6. stage band. The variety of events made it a fun- filled evening. 1. Kurt Klein’s roll-top desk. 2. The Oxford girls basketball team began the season with high hopes and one main goal — winning State. This dream didn’t get the team through the season; long hours of practice, lots of determination, and the constant dedication of the 2A Girls Basketball Coach of the Year are what made it all come true. The team received fantastic support from the loyal Oxford fans. With spirits boosted high, and a record of 20-1, the Wildcats entered the Kansas State Tournament for the second year in a row and came out carrying the Title. Coach Littell had reached the ultimate, and proudly he shared with 11 girls the highest honor possible for a basketball team to acquire. The girls were a closely-knit club. All things they did were done as one. Together they worked, together they shared physical pain, together they won; and on March 14, it was together that they stood in the center of Ahearn Stadium with a gold medal placed around their necks. The huge crowd went wild, OHS sounded from the band, and an indescribable bond of love held our team together for that one victorious moment, a moment which will bring chills of excitement and tears of joy for many years to come. The satisfaction of a goal completed moved Oxford on to create more memories for the team, such as a mile long welcome-home procession, and the presentation of keys to the city by Mayor Nelson. Thus ended the greatest basketball season Oxford has ever seen. Con- gratulations, girls, and thank you for being number one. And how does the team feel? “Thanks, Coach. Without you, our dream might never have come true. You’re the greatest, and we love you!” 78 Bluestem 54-46 Dexter 67-36 Central 57-26 Udall 81-39 Rose Hill 72-50 Caldwell 79-50 Udall 59-32 S. On that date, at 1:00 am, an expectant group of near-graduates left the sleeping town of Oxford for a bigger, more exciting place — Dallas! After a week of furiously slaving to complete needed funds, they triumphantly climbed aboard a chartered Amera Travel bus to talk, play cards, and sleep(?). Eight hours brought them to their destination, Six Flags Over Texas. Thus began a day to always remember: roller coasters, hour-long lines, food, tired bodies, long rides, sunburn, hap- py faces, more food, upset stomachs, worn-out shoes, fruit juice, picture-taking, and many memories. When 6:00 pm came around, a grateful group of weary but smiling class- mates met by the fountain at Six Flag’s main entrance. The trip home was an experience in itself. Balloons and strange hats were everywhere, blankets and pillows were brought forth, and a less energetic confusion filled the bus. A rested driver, exhausted sponsors (thank you for your sacrifices, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard White, Mrs. Wilcoxen, and brave Miss Lohmann!), and the air of a day well spent made the trip a complete success — but don’t forget the terrific group of Seniors, who made it all possible! 1. The Juniors had been planning and scheming for many months to make the prom a success. The prom was held in the cafeteria, and was decorated with the Junior class’ colors — blue and gold. Many Juniors worked long into the night of April 24, and rose early to finish up the next morning. The banquet was prepared by the Juniors’ parents. This event started at 7:00. At the banquet the welcome was given by Junior class president, Mike Bonesteel; the response was given by Kurt Horsch, the Senior class president. Sherry Rakestraw read the Senior will, and Tiffin Sauzek read the Senior prophecy. The dance after the banquet was enjoyed by all who attended. Music was provided by the band “Sky”. Over all, the Juniors feel that the prom was a great success, thanks to all that were involved. CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS! Graduation exer- cises took place on May 14 in the high school gymnasi- um. The male graduates were attired in the traditional black gowns and caps, while the girls wore red gowns and caps. Each graduate’s outfit was completed with a pink rose boutonniere. Reverend Tom Eastman gave the commencement address. Junior attendants were Nin George, Sherry Rakestraw, Grant Wilkerson and Kitra Thomas. 1. Brian Knowles, Darren Delp, and Chip Potucek. 2. The Annual Staff worked hard on the 1981 yearbook, keeping the student body in mind. They were selected at the beginning of the year: activities included selling ads, collecting money, and giving a great deal of dedication to the annual. They wish to thank alj teachers for exerting great amounts of patience with them, the students for making the annual possible, Mrs. Mc- Kinley for her well-trained advice, and a special thank you to Mr. Clark for being such an understanding principal. They hope that all will be satisfied with the 1981 Wildcat — maybe even a little surprised at the nice changes. It was a good year! 90 Albright investment C.R. ANTHONY CO. Watt Equipment, Inc. Winfield, Ks. Wellington Implement Co. Wellington, Ks. Ill Another school year has quickly passed away, forcing us to again look toward the future. Memories are all that are left. Some of those memories are recorded in this book with pictures and words; others you must place here for yourself. When I began this year, my biggest goal was to make it real. As each day passed, I feared more the end°of my high school days: and when I stood in the graduation line, I realized that by fearing the future I had lost the present. By then it was too late — I can never be in OHS again. Yet I felt a very deep longing to begin the year over, and make every day and every moment as long as I could, so that I could take a closer look at life. I see now that I was very selfish. Because I was worrying so much about making special memories for myself, I failed to help those around me. I wonder how many people I could have given hope or needed confidence to if I had only stopped and opened my eyes? Or who could I have given a smile and hug, so that their day would be a little more special? And I am especially sorry for not telling each of you about the love Jesus has for you as an individual and a friend. He knows you best, but He loves you most. That in itself is what gives me the desire to live life to its fullest. I will never be a part of OHS again. Instead, it is a part of me, and I love each of you because you were a part of my life. Thank you for being just like you are, and remember that life was created to be beautiful. The choice is yours. God bless you all. Tiffin Sauzek, 1981 Editor
