' € 2 Miss Susan Piercy Mr. Carl Wofford The yearbook staff dedicates the 1980 Wildcat to Miss Susan Piercy and Mr. Carl Wofford. Miss Piercy has taught at O.H.S. for seven years. She has taught Sophomore and Junior English and has sponsored Pep Club. Mr. Wofford started teaching at O.H.S. nineteen years ago. Over the years, he has taught Junior and Senior English, Speech, Drama and Journalism. He has sponsored the senior class, Oxfordian, Wildcat yearbook, and directed forensics and the plays. The OHS choir was under the new direction of Mark Torkelson this year. Everyone worked hard all year and presented two concerts, which were the Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert. Jazz band is a class that is made up of stu- dents out of the concert band and which is un- der the direction of Mark Torkelson. They meet three days a week before school. The Jazz band went on tour, at- tended a workshop at Southwestern, and went to Tri-State. At the end of the year they gave a concert. The Guitar class is new this year. There were five people enrolled in it. Mr. Torkelson taught the class. The Oxford Wildcat Marching Band, has really been moving, as they marched down Oxfords’ main street, for their first performance. They also boogied down to the tune of OHS, at the Hutchin- son State Fair Band Day. They were judged and they received a superior rating! Other activities included, marching at football games, and cheer- ing everyone on at the pep rallies! They held two concerts which were great. This left everyone aware of the musical talent in OHS. O.H.S., a little louder now, O.H.S.” These are some of the cheers used by the Pep-Club to urge the Wildcats on to Victory. The Pep Club’s purpose is to promote school team spirit. The members take turns decorating the halls, locker rooms, and making the spirit hoop for games. The Senior class of 1980 thanks the Ju- niors for a very enjoyable evening. Fashion Show 1980 The 1980 Fashion Show was held May 6. This year’s theme was “Sil- houettes Of Fashion.” The stage was set with manikins which were dressed in dresses from 1900 to 1979. Kitra Thomas and Sheryl Biller manikin modeled also. Kitra’s dress was from ’40’s and Sheryl modeled a pantsuit from the ’70’s. All Home Ec. classes had a part in it. Home Ec. I made cookies and punch for refreshments. Home Ec. They are required to make four book reports each nine weeks. Miss Piercy teaches English II and III. They also study one semester of grammar and one of litera- ture. They are required to turn in a given amount of pages of book reports each nine weeks from a required book list. Mr. Wofford is the instructor of Senior English. The Seniors learn how to write term papers and increase their skills in writing and studying literature. Four years of Eng- lish are required to graduate. In the senior year, students may take either speech, jour- nalism or English IV. B English III discusses “Our Town.’ English IV studies “Macbeth.' 50 Journalism Journalism is a good class to take if you’re interested in writing. You learn many things. Photography has a big part in it. They do the year- book. They also publish the Oxford High School newspaper. They do one for each month. It’s an interesting class and you really learn quite a bit out of it. Jana Witte works on the editorial for the Oxfordian while Laurinda Williams types a story. Driver Education All the Freshmen took Driver Edu- cation. Mr. Shaffer taught this course. 51 Algebra II The Math Classes are taught by Mr. McDaniels, The classes offered are General Math, Algebra I, Geometry, Al- gebra II, and Trigonometry and Analy- sis. Each year the Math gets more diffi- cult with each harderclass being based on the years of Math taken before. These are important classes because people use math every day in their lives. The classes offered are; Physical Science, Earth Science, Chemistry, Biology, Data Processing, and Physics. Physical Science and Chemistry deal with elements, miner- als, and the physical properties of the uni- verse. Biology deals with animal and plant life. Earth Science studies the geological structure of the earth. Physics deals with waves, electricity, and math. It is an ad- vanced science course. Data Processing is a new course offered this year, it teaches a person how to run a computer. One year of laboratory science is required to graduate from O.H.S. The physics class work on workbooks. 53 Juniors in American History Mr. Leonard White taught American Govern- ment this year. This is a required course for all seniors. This course lasts for one semester. Other semester courses are Kansas History and Psychol- ogy. This year the Kansas History Class learned about this history of Kansas and the history of Oxford. Psychology class discusses human behavior and took a field trip to the State Hospital. Mr. White also taught American History. Monte Wyckoff was the health P.E. teacher this year. Besides learning about health they learned many physical activities, such as learning to play golf. Health P.E. is a required course for the freshmen at O.H.S. Mr. Wyckoff a golf pro? Do you really know You mean hit that what you’re saying? little thing! 54 Shorthand Typing I Business Business Law This year in business some of the new courses offered are Shorthand and Secre- tarial training. In secretarial training, the students learned how to use office ma- chines, filing kits, and type business let- ters. The students learned the Gregg Shorthand in shorthand class. Business is concerned with the rules that apply to business situations and transactions. It teaches rules that are leaguely enforced. Other business classes that are offered are; Typing I, and Gerneral Business. All of these classes are taught by Mary Kinyon. Secretarial Training Shop The shop classes are taught by Gary Barton and Alfred Brown (Brownie). The classes that were of- fered this year were welding, auto-mechanics, Gener- al Metal Shop, Woods I, Woods II, and Woods III. The boys displayed their projects at the annual shop Art Show, May 16. Pottery, sculpting, and painting were taught. All forms of each subject were taught. The class is interesting and exciting because it allows each person to create art. 58 Roxanna sculpting French The French class is a new class this year. It was taught by Irene McKinley. The French class learns how to read and write in French and they also study French culture and cuisine. They hold French con- versations and the most exciting day of the year was when each student brought a French food.
