any 2 The Oxford Blue Devils opened the 1953-5b basketball campaign with a win over Wadena. The initial appearance of the varsity squad in their opening game indicated that the Blue Devils could very possibly be the 'team to beat' in Benton County competition. However, bouts with the flu and minor injuries to key personnel on the souad at crucial times during the season prevented the team from compiling a win-loss record of earlier expectation. The Blue Devil boys entered every contest with the traditional Oxford 'wi l to win' and were considered by each opponent as form- idable adversaries that could be very difficult to defeat. The majority of the Oxford losses this season were by only a few points and several of the games were decided in the closing seconds. Despite the handicap imposed by illness and injuries, last 'second' defeats, and unuaual height advantage by several of the opposing teams, Oxford closed the season with a 7 won and 12 loss record. Our senior class was competently represented on the varsity souad by the 'stalwart' Max Carter, 'jumpin' Dick Atkinson, 'speedy' Dick Fuller, and 'hefty' Virgil Wolfe. Their contribution to the varsity squad cannot be ascertained by points or 'winning basket.' We seniors know that without 'our senior boys' an 'unfillable gap' would have existed. We extend our thanks and admiration to them. The Junior High basketball team had a comparatively good season this year, winning lO out of 12 games. The squad was fortunate to have unusual height and weight for a Junior High aggregation. Combining their physical assets with a tremendous desire to win, they exhibited an exuberant game for their fans. ' In most of their games the team put forth an excessive amount of fight, and won by an extreme number of points. After the first five got a lead on the opponents, the coach usually sent in one or two second strings, boys who would prove to be High stars.
