THE BOAR HUNT A Tall Tall Story One day last fall my uncle and I took a trlp to the wllds of Canada to do a llttle wmld boar huntmg Although Ihad never been before Ifelt qulte sure I could shoot any old boar that walked At eleven o'clock of that flrst nlght we reached our destlnatlon tlred and car weary but eager for the morrow That next mormng we arose at flve o'clock and wlth our gulde set out lnto the forest All through the mormng we walked stralght 1nto the blg dark woods We had seen a few slgns but nothlng sufflclent to exclte my uncle or our gulde although It made my heart beat llke a trlp hammer and.I expected at anymomentto see a monstrous wlld boar come charglng at us At noontlme we paused beslde a llttle sprlng to provlde ourselves wmth a goodly supply of energy for the afternoon s luke back to camp We had been walklng for perhaps three quarters of an hour when sud denly there was a crashlng and snortmng ln the brush a few yards to our rlght The gulde put hls fmger to h1s lmps motlomng for sllence and sllpped nolselessly behlnd a tree beckonmng to us to follow su1t The gulde had placed me on h1s left IU order to protect me from the reason that fool boar declded to make a detour and woe for me came up on my s1de Foollshly I Jumped attractlng the boar s attentlon and that whole three hundred pounds of pork made stralght for me I flred two shots ln hls dmrectlon and started runnlng The gumde and my uncle dld not dare to shoot as I was so close to the boar The boar came rmght after me galnlng all the tlme At the last second before those horrlble tusks reached me I leaped lnto the a1r and of all thxngs lmaglnable the boar ran rlght under me and I came down on h1s back When all th1s had happened we were near c1v1l1zat1on and the boar found an old tote road and down xt we went Then we came out 1nto an open fleld and onto an open hlghway The boar scared to death of that thmng on h1s back kept rlght on up to a Canadlan customs statlon The guards yelled Stop' but the plg kept rmght on One guard ln full dlsregard of my l1fe placed a pretty shot through the boar s ear The offlcers ran up handcuffed me and took me lnto court where I was charged wlth smugglmg pork across the border Francls Lee Herr1ck'5Z I D ' ! g . . , . - , I ' Y . .
