Shedding Some Light on The Dark Continent I was born in Africa, and I live In the most southerly part of the dark continent . Con- trary to popular belief, we don't have lions, elephants, and other wild animals running around our backyardsl Oxford Is . . . ummm— different” from what I expected! I come from the city of Johannesberg, in an area called the Wltwatersrand, which has a population of a few million — against Oxford's few thousand! I also come from an ALL BOYS school that has about 1,300 pupils. I must say that I do prefer the more females” here at Oxford Academy! You are also all so friendly, and really know how to make a person feel at home—even If you are all out to Americanize” me! My Americanization began with a new pair of Levis , and after that, all pillars crumbled. My South African accent, along with my glo- rious golden tan, began to fade. I am so white at the moment that if I showed my face at a South African beach, I would prob- ably be forcefully removed by Ghostbusters, Inc. Well, who wants a tan anyhow—when you can have FROST BITE! Charles Kerr Hejsan Alllhop! My name is Lena Andersson. As you can tell by my name, I'm not one of you . Right. I'm one of your two Swedish exchange students this year. I can’t under- stand that the time passes by so fast. I've been here more than half my time already. It's right as they say, time flies when you're having fun! Before I left Swe- den, especially at the airport, I wondered If I really did the right thing, leaving home for a whole year. But after only a few days, I knew I had. It's impossible to explain how much this year means to me. I've learned more In 5 months here than I would have done In 5 years back home. I want to thank every- body for helping me make this a great experience. Also, a very special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis and their sons for having me living with them the whole year. I will miss you all, Lena Seniors 19
