OXFORD, NEW YORK 13830 (607) 843-2025 VOLUME XXXII ENROLLMENT: 364 Opening 1 Could I see the schedule book? “I don't know what I have today. “Can you tell me the CEEB code? May I have a pass to class? Is this an A, B, C, or D day?” The person most capable of helping out with all of the above is our friend, Mrs. Rice. Mrs. Rice has assumed the position of H.S. guidance office secretary since October 1972 when, five weeks into the school year, she stepped in to fill the vacancy created by a retirement. During our research we found out more about this lady. In June 1940, then known as Ruth Smith, Mrs. Rice graduated from Oxford Academy Central School. Throughout high school she was In sports, glee club, class plays, and served her class as treasurer and secretary. After four years at OACS, Mrs. Rice furthered her education at a business school in Binghamton. Before coming to OACS she was employed in the local area and also raised four children. Written in the 1940 Blackhawk characterizing Mrs. Rice was the following: Smitty is sweet, al- ways ready to smile, her dark eyes were made the boys to guile. We, the class of 1986, take great pleasure in dedicating our yearbook to Mrs. Rice. We would like to thank her for all the time and devotion that she has contributed to the student body for so many years. The educational program at Ox- ford High would have suffered without her help in tying up the loose ends. 2 Dedication ADVISORS JOAN SWERTFAGER Degrees SUNY Albany. Classes taught Latin I-VI. That's the typical New Zealand greeting; It's really slang for “Good day and is used regardless of the time or place. As a Rotary Exchange Student to Kaiapoi, N.Z.. from August, 1984, to July, 1985, I had many experiences: flying in a six-seater plane over glaciers, hiking thirty-two miles through magnificent native bush, skiing treeless ski fields, soaking up rays at the beach of a secluded bay on the Pacific Coast, exploring in a city built around extinct volcanoes, and the list goes on and on. Besides that, I learned a new language, discovered many unfamiliar customs and different ways of doing everyday things and made friends that helped make my year the best of my life so far. Many thanks to both the Oxford Ro- tary Club and the school district for making the program possible. Ann 3 ii s ft HELLOI My name is Ola Roos, and I'm one of the exchange students here this year. I come from Sweden, where I live in Landskrona, a city of 35,000 inhabitants. Landskrona is situat- ed on the west coast of the southern part of Sweden, just across from Denmark's capital, Copenhagen. You may wonder why I'm here, and not back in Sweden for my senior year. I've always liked to experience new things, so when my dad one day asked me if I wanted to be an exchange student, the an- swer was obvious. The last couple of weeks before I left Sweden I spent wondering if I was doing the right thing. This year has proved it to be right! I It has been the absolutely best year of my life. Never have I done so much, and learned so much in so short a time. A big THANKS!! to everybody who has helped me to feel so at home. Yours, Ola 18 Seniors Shedding Some Light on The Dark Continent I was born in Africa, and I live In the most southerly part of the dark continent . Con- trary to popular belief, we don't have lions, elephants, and other wild animals running around our backyardsl Oxford Is . . . ummm— different” from what I expected! I come from the city of Johannesberg, in an area called the Wltwatersrand, which has a population of a few million — against Oxford's few thousand! I also come from an ALL BOYS school that has about 1,300 pupils. I must say that I do prefer the more females” here at Oxford Academy! You are also all so friendly, and really know how to make a person feel at home—even If you are all out to Americanize” me! My Americanization began with a new pair of Levis , and after that, all pillars crumbled. My South African accent, along with my glo- rious golden tan, began to fade. I am so white at the moment that if I showed my face at a South African beach, I would prob- ably be forcefully removed by Ghostbusters, Inc. Well, who wants a tan anyhow—when you can have FROST BITE! Charles Kerr Hejsan Alllhop! My name is Lena Andersson. As you can tell by my name, I'm not one of you . Right. I'm one of your two Swedish exchange students this year. I can’t under- stand that the time passes by so fast. I've been here more than half my time already. It's right as they say, time flies when you're having fun! Before I left Swe- den, especially at the airport, I wondered If I really did the right thing, leaving home for a whole year. But after only a few days, I knew I had. It's impossible to explain how much this year means to me. I've learned more In 5 months here than I would have done In 5 years back home. I want to thank every- body for helping me make this a great experience. Also, a very special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis and their sons for having me living with them the whole year. I will miss you all, Lena Seniors 19 20 Special Events Special Events 21 ON THE EDGE OF A DREAM LEFT TO RIGHT: A. Fisher, R. Borchardt; P. Hlnman, B. Olmsted: B. Hathaway. J. Jones; M. Motyka, P. The Oxford S.A.D.D. chapter began after a group of students attended an assembly in Albany featuring Mr. Robert Anastas, S.A.D.D.'s founder. He started the idea after two members of his high school's hockey team were killed due to drunk driving. He wanted to make students aware of the dangers of drinking and driving before it was too late Last year the Oxford S.A.D.D. chapter sponsored an assembly (pictured here) to promote awareness of the group and the serious consequences of driving drunk. The group also sponsored safe rides home from Prom and Graduation parties which were well- received by the student body. This year Mike Beckwith, Jon Rogers, and Cindy Chesebro make up the executive committee, advised by Mrs. Morris. Already, with the help of many students, teachers, and parents, S.A.D.D. has spon- sored an All-Night Party to help illustrate the idea that you can have fun without alcohol. About 130 stu- dents participated and all involved had a good time. Special Events 27 28 Sports POWDER PUFF SENIORS-FRESHMEN FIRST ROW: M. Teftt. T. Ryan. C. Cosen. Z. Ventra. K. Estelow. S. Diamond. So far this year the student govern- ment has accomplished a lot of things they set out to do. The officers are Stacey Diamond, president; Kaz Estelow, vice-president; Amy Fisher, secretary; and J.J., John Jackson, as treasurer. The first scheduled activity was a WAAL dance with John Carter. It was one of the most successful dances in Oxford's history. The second event was the Powder Puff football game that had not existed for the past four years. It was an excit- ing game with almost as many fans as there would be for a boys’ game. The junior-sophomore girls pulled through with a 7-6 over the seniors and freshmen. Touchdowns were scored by Mary El- len Jenness, with the extra point by Dawn Velten. Also, the seniors’ Cathie Lannlng scored. A few plans for the future include the computer match and the annual spirit week. A big thanks goes out to all students who have participated in these activit- ies In some way.
