BLACKHAWK 1985 OXFORD ACADEMY CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL S. WASHINGTON AVE. OXFORD, NEW YORK 13830 (607) 843-2025 VOLUME XXXI ENROLLMENT: 355 OPENING This year we, the editors, have created a new image for the Blackhawk yearbook. We have used the theme, “Moving Ahead,” to describe the changes and growing the student body goes through from day to day. We hope we have created an everlast- ing treasure of the memories and friend- ships made here at Oxford High! CONTENTS Seniors P-4 Special Events P-22 Organizations p.28 Sports p.44 Faculty p.64 Underclassmen p.74 Advertising p.84 MOVING 2 Opening DEDICATION The 1985 Yearbook Staff would like to dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Walsh. As her time at Oxford High comes to a close, we would like to take the time to thank her for all she has contributed to the student body. We never could have accomplished what we did without her determination and devotion. Thank you, Mrs. Walsh Special thanks to Kim Emerson and Jace Hart for designing the cover! ......AHEAD ! Opening 3 SENIORS The years have passed and we’ve grown tall, We’d like to, but can’t remember it all. Its meant so much to have such friends to help you through until the end. Our class is special, one of a kind. One like ours is hard to find, ’cause we’re the class of ’85, and everyone knows that we have more of what we need to go on, to survive, to be strong. We’ll soon go on, our separate ways, start thinking of the older days. The memories wouldn’t be quite the same if it weren’t for the terrific class that we became! Larry Dawes THE CLASS OF 1985 It won’t be long now and we’ll be looking back at our high school days. As we look back, we’ll realize that our life at Oxford Academy was perhaps the most memorable, most guiding, and most exciting period of our lives. There is the excitement and anticipation of starting a new life and the sadness of leaving old friends. Looking back at the history of the Class of 1985, we find many memories. In our freshman year, we were led by Mike Honkomp as president. Tara Mannion served as vice-president. Julie Wright took notes and Deena Castellion handled the money. During this year, we earned $489. During our sophomore year, we were under the care of David Benjamin as president. Tara Mannion returned as vice- president. Andrea Hall served as secretary and Julie Wright took control of the money. We also held the annual Sadie Hawkins dance. Mike Honkomp and Cathie Lanning were the king and queen of the dance. During the year we earned $2,085. As juniors, David Benjamin was gladly welcomed back as president. Brian Murphy was second in command. Deena Castellion once again was our treasurer while Kelli Yarnes became secretary. To raise money for prom we sold maga- zines and earned $2,400. Our theme song for prom was “Faithfully.” With an oriental theme, the gym was decorated in red, black, and gold with umbrellas, fans, lanterns, cherry blossom trees, and a pagoda. Julie Wright was crowned Queen and was escorted by Mike Fleming. The princesses were Kim Emerson and Valarie Kolis. SENIORS AT LAST! Rory Davis took charge with Diane Niederer backing him up. Beth Page served as secretary and Deena Castellion completed her third year as treasurer. Kim Emerson escorted by Brian Murphy was voted Home- coming Queen. First princess was Michele Burrell and second princess was Valarie Kolis. As graduation draws near, we gather our new ideas and all of our old memories. One of the best memories we take with us will have to be our “WILD AND CRAZY YEAR AT THE TOP!!” Seniors 21 SPECIAL EVENTS PROM “FAITHFULLY” The night was May 19, and the Junior class had named it “Faithfully.” Hours were spent decorating the gym in shades of red, black, and gold. The queen's throne was encased in a pagoda decorated with white and silver streamers. From the ceiling hung oriental lanterns, and umbrellas scattered the floor. As the night lingered on, the couples enjoyed dancing to the music of Eclipse. Then came the moment that all had been waiting for, the crowning of the queen. This year the honor went to Julie Wright escorted by Mike Fleming. Her princesses were Kim Emerson, escorted by Craig Diamond, and Valerie Kolis, escorted by Jim Deforest. With the climax of the evening completed, the couples enjoyed a few more dances togeth- er, thus ending a successful and enjoyable evening. Julie and Mike Kim and Craig 24 Special Events MY PROM... Organizations 31 This year, the student government has taken a different approach to school activities. The student government is trying to bring back that old school spirit which over the years has diminished. This school has a lot to offer. This organization is trying and will continue to try to use these assets to benefit the school, students, faculty and the community. The people in charge of this task of bringing back the spirit and making this school not just a place to learn, but to expand, are Da- vid Benjamin, Brian Murphy, Stacey Diamond, and Tammie Nowalk. Through the cooperation of these offi- cers and members, we have made about $2,000. This money will be helpful in reaching our goal. Some of this money has gone to special work- shops for the members and the usual soda expenses of concession stand. We feel that we have made much progress this year. STUDENT GOVERNMENT First row S. Writing copy, cutlines, and headlines with hope. And picking out names from kaleidoscope. Cropping a picture for a spread. Being careful not to cut off someone’s head. Remembering no trapped white space And one pica in between And five is to twelve as eight is to nineteen. Frantic for pictures never taken, exposed or lost, Then plugging the toilet where excess film was lost. Waiting two hours for pizza to be fed With music provided by Duran Duran, the Who and the Dead. With Tammie’s threats. Holly’s appetite. Denise's bright ideas. Andrea’s tongue twisters. Shelly’s mouth, Lisa's silence. Subscription sales. Advertising money, photographers’ creativity. STATS This year’s team had a lack of experience, due to the fact that 19 seniors were lost to graduation. With only 6 seniors returning for the 1984 season, the varsity team had to rely heavily on the previous J.V. team for players. After an 18-6 win over Greene and a 20-12 win over Sherburne-Earlville, it looked as if the team would gain respect. Unfortunately, a defeat by Delhi and a tough loss to Deposit took the heart from the team. The offen- sive “heart” was the quarterback, Brian Murphy, whose season ended with a broken jaw. The other “heart” was the spirit; and it was completely lost after the two losses. The team ended the season at 4-5 but with a solid base for next year. The team had 5 people named to All-League honors. They were Phil Mitchell, Mike Bartle, Bill Golden, Mark Schmidt, and Chris Hamilton. There were 6 players named to the All-County team. They were Mike Beckwith, Bill Golden, Phil Mitchell, Bob Pascal, Joel Crandall, Mark Schmidt, and Chris Hamilton. T. Mannion, M. Burrell, J. Wright, K. Wackford Sports 49 CHEERLEADERS Sitting M. The schedule this year has been a tough one sporting some of the best competition in the state. The Clyde Cole was a success with Queensbury taking home the 1st place trophy. The S-E Classic was also a great tournament this year with State ranked teams Canastota and Baldwisville coming away with 2nd and 1st respectively. Juniors Thad Rice and Keith Lanfear along with Senior Lyle Wright all have winning records and should do well in the post-season tournaments. SENIOR L. The 1984-85 Girls Blackhawk Basketball team was led by senior Dawn Heggie’s seventeen points and fourteen rebounds per game average. Dawn was se- lected to the all star teams in both the Norwich Tournament and the A.B. Doyle Tournament. The duties of controlling the offense and spearheading the defense were handled by Michele Burrell and Julie Wright. At the wing, Deena Castellion turned in many fine performances; and our top hustler was Beth Lucier. Despite losing those people to graduation, the fu- ture looks bright, due to the credits of a good supporting junior class and a tough J.V. squad. Sports 55 VOLLEYBALL VARSITY Front row: H. With only 2 returning from the 1983-84 team, this year’s Blackhawk volleyball team ex- perienced a rebuilding season. Due to this lack of experience, the team got off to a slow start. However, by the season’s end they had earned the respect of the other teams in the league. This experience gained will make for a bright future. The leadership supplied by Andrea Hall will be greatly missed. BASEBALL VARSITY Front Row: P Cirello. D. Christian, S. Sheldon, C. Hamilton. Back Row: B Murphy. M Hinman. M Cleary, D. Tewksbury. M. The D-Day Discussion group is a quiet, unassuming organi- zation bent on serving mankind in the fashion it knows best. Pizza, cheap shots, and Pepsi nosers are what draw this odd collection of megalomaniacs into a tight, closeknit, silent society whose only real worth is to put up coherent messages on the marquee each week. From the day school opens in the fall until the hour graduation passes in the spring, they do it all. These inno- cent faces you see in the picture are merely masks of their true talent. Just look closely at Sgt. at Arms Cathie, kneeling there—begging for new challenges, President Amy—smiling cutely but commanding with an iron claw, bewildered Trea- surer Kaz, looking confused to throw subversive groups off track, and Teresa — leering as only a VP could. One must ask what (who?) is really on her mind. They would like to leave you with the philosophy they’ve adopted from a MASH favorite, Charles Emerson Winches- ter III. “We do only one thing—but we do it well!” BASKETBALL STATS L-R: C.
