Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1983 volume:

BLACKHAWK 1983 SUNSET All the days I thought could never end are gone. All the days that seemed so far away have passed. All the lovers I thought would last forever have died. So many happy moments are now happy memories. But ... I still have tomorrows filled with the hope of things to come, and although I watch the sun set now, I know it will rise again. Author Unknown OXFORD ACADEMY AND CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL OXFORD, NEW YORK DEDICATION We, the class of 1983, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Ronald Smithmeyer. He has been our friend and “one wild and crazy guy. who helped us through our years at Oxford. In our re- cent poll, the senior class voted Mr. Smithmeyer the favorite male teacher, a title he has held for many years. The class of 1983 feels he deserves this honor because he has devoted much of his time to the student body. “THIS ONE'S FOR YOU, UNCLE SPIFFY!” 2 I Favorite Singers Pat Senator John Cougar Favorite Color Blue Favorite Song © Favorite Pastime Having a good time Favorite Food Pizza and Beer Hard to Say I’m Sorry FAVoRiTt Book : Gone with t ynnt Favorite Group FAVOR I re TEACH ERS: I. Yet, there are many memories to be cherished. In our freshman year, Ruth Boyer served as president, Terri Fowlston was next in line as our vice-president. Darlene Harvey was our secre- tary and Pat O'Reilly managed the money. To start our account, we sold pocket planning cal- endars. As sophomores, Rocky Honkomp led the way, Terri Fowlston served a second term as vice- president. Robbin Rydzewski was our secretary and Pam Ballard took control of the money. That year, we sponsored sock hops, a St. Patrick's Day Dance, and had bake sales which in- creased our funds. During our Junior year, Ruth Boyer returned to the throne as our president and Dennis McBride was second in command. Pam Ballard took the notes and Amy Jenness was our treasurer. We sold magazines and had rollerskating parties to raise money. Our prom song was Crazy Over You, written and sung by Geoff Magnani. The gym was decorated in dark blue, baby blue, and white. Darlene Harvey was the Prom Queen. She was escorted by Bill Ballard. The princesses were Karen Whaley and Jacky Knoll, respective- ly. As Seniors, we said bon voyage to Jacky Knoll and Ruth Boyer, as they left for Japan and Finland as exchange students. Our final year ended with Robbin Rydzewski as president and John Borchardt as our vice-president. Mary Ellen Boname was our secretary and Amy Jenness re- turned as treasurer. It takes awhile to get used to such things as sleeping on a futong on the floor, using the same bath water as your whole family and eating the various native foods. Such foods as sushi (raw fish), tako (Octopus), seaweed and squid. Eel is also popular and a favorite of mine. School here is very strict compared to Oxford. All Japanese high school students wear uniforms. Tsukumi High School is about three times the size of Oxford, having about 1,300 stu- dents. In school I study a number of traditional Japanese hobbies including Soroban (a set of beads used for calculat ing). Calligraphy (Chinese Character writing with ink and a brush). Tea Ceremony, and Judo. Each year the second year students take a class trip. This year, we went to Tokyo and also Hida Takayama. the oldest city in Japan. Staying with my friends in the hotel was great fun! It was then that I first experienced a public bath. A few weeks ago my school had their Bunka Sai (school festi- val). It lasted for three days. During the first two. everyone got a chance to see each classes’ project. My class did theirs on America, so it was fun for me to help out. The third day was sports day. Everyone competed in various races and events. It was great fun! I am learning so much here! Time is going fast for me and Is full of many new and exciting things! Sayoonara. Jacky RUTH BOYER Terve Kaikki! I've been in Finland for about 5 months now and everything is going well. Finland is a gorgeous country and my city is no exception. I live in a city called Kuopio with 80.000 Finns, so it's a bit larger than Oxford. Even though the city is so large, there's a lot more to be seen than buildings. Kuopi is right in the center of the lake district. In the summer there's lots of fishing and sailing. In the winter there's ice hockey and skating. There are also two downhill skiing places. The World Junior Ski Jumping Championships are held here every year, so it's well known. Many of my friends here were quite surprised to find out that most Ameri- cans don't know much about Finland They wanted me to tell you a few things. It's not part of Russia; they don't live in igloos, ride reindeer, or eat whale meat (very often). Don't worry if you didn't know that, though I had a hard time convincing them that most Americans don't live like the people on “Dallas. My school only has about 500 peo pie in it but it's quite different from home The classes are 45 minutes long with 15 minute breaks. The students seem to be a bit more serious, in general. Also, there are no clubs or school activities Just learning the lan- guage is more than enoguh to keep me busy. It's hard—but I'm doing it. I'm also helping in an English kindergar ten class and I have a conversation class at school for people who want to improve their English I try to ski. I'm in a band, I do a lot of things. Mostly. I'm just enjoying The year is going by so quickly, that I'm sure I'll be back in Oxford before I can believe it. I’m looking forward to it. Hoisin mielin eteenpdin Ruth 20 Seniors EXCHANGE STUDENTS Hello, I am Fabienne Kennel, your Rotary Exchange student from Colmar, France. I've been here five months now, and I really like it. The days seem to fly by that I don’t have time to do everything I would like to do. I came the 26th of August and couldn’t understand or speak English, but now with your help it is much better. I like the school in Oxford. In France, it is so much different because we don’t have study halls like you do. We also don’t have time to play dif- ferent kinds of sports. I am enjoying the ski club here and like it very much. I would like to thank you, the Rotarians, the teachers for their help, and to my wonderful host families for giving me this opportunity. You will al- ways be a part of my life. I think being an ex- change student is the best thing that has ever happened in my life. Merci beaucoup d vous Fabienne My Dearest Friends: This year in the United States has been wonderful tor me. I'm glad that lots of great memories I share with the student body and the staff of Oxford High will dlways be remembered. You can't Imagine how special you all are and how much you mean to me. I don't say this just to be nice.” I say it because I mean It. It's been real! I've learned a lot in Oxford and each one of you sure has your own contribution in this learning. After all, I have to thank you. I feel that the year of 1982 was a great success for me and you were a part of it. Now, it is time to go! Maybe I will see you again and maybe I won't. No matter where I am or when it will be. I will be thinking of you as the greatest people I have ever met and spent time with. Oxford, I will never forget you and I will miss you a lot. Take care and God Bless. Fldvla Panico P.S.: If any of you ever decide to come to Brazil, make sure you stop in and say Hi. I promise I'll lock my snake pet in the backyard and I won't let the Indians that live up in the tree across the street attack you. , I love you. Keith Whittaker 48 Organizations EXCHANGE STUDENT TO NORWAY Mark Scira The sun is a swollen, red sphere that hangs above the ocean horizon for the endless hours of the morning. “Land of the midnight sun’’ is a title well put. For four and a half weeks, north Norway is veiled in a night spent in twilight. I spent my summer evenings out in my family's cruiser, laugh- ing heartily with my new found friends, fishing for cod and mackerel, swimming in the 50° ocean, and sunbathing on the smooth holma” islands. Sandfjord is a busy, fairly old, cobblestone town. It's harbors are laced with salty sailors that look over their gin and tell curious tales of when the town swelled with people of many lands in pursuit of the valued whale. Though most Norwegians speak relatively perfect English, they are a shy and quiet spoken type of people. In or- der to have them open up to me, I learned their tongue. The foods were fantastic. I grew accustomed to the staple fish meals and various breads. I had “torskrung” (cod eggs), “hval (pilot whale), and even caviar. It was delicious. The fresh crab and shrimps by the kilo, open air fruit markets were great and not as expensive in relation to the economy here in the U.S. They also have the most enjoyable pastries, cream-filled dumplings, marsipan rolls, “skolebrod'' (a type of bearclaw served with cream or melted cheese), and thin, salty shells made to eat with fish patties. Good beer and good friends is a Norwegian custom that makes for lasting memories. It was with a melancholy anticipation I packed up my boxes and suitcase, thought of the four countries I visited: Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland, fyiemories of flying over Norway's largest glacier, of skiing in the highlands of the north, and of nights spent drinking sweet bringebaer saft (a hot drink of berries) by a friend's fireplace. It's hard to stuff a year of happiness into a 3x5 suit- case, but a lot of hard rope and help from your mates makes it a lot easier. All in all, a year in Rotary exchange has taught me a lot about myself and about people around me. Har det bra, min venner. Men, bare har det alle sammen til. Med hilsen, Mark Scira Organizations 49 BOY’S STATE Robert Honkomp and Dennis McBride Boy's State is an experience every male high school student should have. We learned all about New York State's political party system and gov- ernments. We elected officials on the city, county, and state govern- ment levels, but still had time to make new friends from all over the state. Even with the treatment from the friendly” Marines, Boy's State was one of the best weeks we've ever spent learning about our government. GIRL’S STATE Robbin Rydzewskl Being a Girl's Stater was an experience I shall never for- get. Through the course of a week, I learned all about New York State's government and how it Is run. I met a lot of people to whom I became very close; I still keep in touch with them. It is an experience I would recom- mend to anyone who has the chance to go. OPERATION ENTERPRISE Operation Enterprise is one of those once-in-a- lifetime experiences. It is a ten-day seminar dealing with business and management, located on Lake Moraine in Hamilton, New York. At first, the thought of learning about business gave us doubts about the program. But we’re certainly glad now that we applied and were accepted, because OE opened our eyes to many things. We learned how to be leaders, good managers, and good subordinates. We learned how to effectively plan and organize projects, and we made lifelong friends. The fun equalled the work, though even the work was interesting enough to make the ses- sions go quickly. We went sailing on the lake nearly every afternoon. Every night there was some type of group activity, and everyone got in- volved. The memories and friendships will surely last a lifetime. Dennis McBride Sports 53 The '82 season was a year of great accom- plishments for the Blackhawks. They ended the season with a perfect 10-0 record which gave them another Sus. East Championship and for the first time, a Section IV Championship. The Blackhawks were rewarded with a 7 ranking in the New York State Sportswriter’s Poll. Over a two year span, the Blackhawks have now won an un- believable nineteen games in a row, which is the third longest winning streak in the State. The Blackhawks engineered their option style team to a school record 333 points. The offense was led by quarterback Mike Fleming and halfbacks Nelson Lucier and Jay Nelson. Lucier ran for 19 TD's and a school record 1,259 yards. Nelson contributed with a career high 604 yards. Fleming, when forced to pass, completed a school record 39 passes to his favorite receiver, Hugh Witchella. David Morris, the speedy flanker, contributed to the offensive with various reverses and passes for 3 TD's. All of these records would not have been ac- complished if not for an excellent offensive line. These outstanding linemen were John Marshman, Mark LoGerfo, Mark Howe. Tim Frank, Craig Frank, John Smith, John Baumgartner, and tight end Rocky Honkomp. They provided superb blocking for the offense all year long. If the offense was unable to score, our out- standing kicker Fleming came through for six field goals, including a school record 48 yarder. The Blackhawks fielded an aggressive defen- sive unit once again. Using various formations, stunts, and blitzes, they constantly put pressure on opposing teams' offenses. The defense was anchored by an aggressive and hard hitting line of LoGerfo, Howe, T. Frank, and C. Frank. They performed brilliantly in every game and were a prime force in holding oppos- ing runners to less than 100 yards per game. If runners were able to get past them, they then ran into a tough group of linebackers. Our linebackers showed excellent pursuit, hard hitting tackles, and good'courage on passes. The line- backers consisted of Dennis McBride, Scott Tansey, Jon Benjamin, Nelson, and Fleming. Since teams were unsuccessful in running against our 4-4 defense, they tried to pass. Here they ran into an experienced secondary. They were led by Jason Webb as safety and corners Witchella, Morris, and John Borchardt. The most memorable game of the season was the championship game versus Delhi. The lead and momentum see-sawed back and forth for three quarters. But early in the fourth quarter, Nel- son Lucier, behind some fine blocking, broke loose on a 41 yard run and put the Blackhawks in good field position. With this run, the momen- tum shifted to the Blackhawks and the offensive line began to open up some good holes against a much bigger and taller Delhi defensive line. This outstanding work led to two fourth quarter TD's and sealed a 28-14 win for the Blackhawks. The '82 team has been the BEST team ever for Oxford. The league and sectional championships, the 19 game winning streak, the state ranking, and a perfect season will remain in the minds of the players for a long time. There is no argument that the '82 team did it all this year. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Kneeling Sherry Thayer. Beth Christian. Bobbie Jo Brewer Standing Kim Emerson, Robin Robinson 54 Sports J.V. Greetings from The Wonderful Land of DENMARK ! I have been here for six months now and I love it! Denmark is such a beautiful country, and the people are so warm and friendly! Denmark is a very small country, but it more than makes up for its size by all its interesting history and culture! It is one of the oldest countries in the world and has one of the oldest flags still in use! The country is very flat, with the highest point being only 152 meters above sea level! I attend a small school with about 300 students, all in their last 3 years. These last 3 years are con- centrated in lines—such as mathematics, the sciences, the languages, music, or the social sciences. School is very different here! There are not very many extracurricular activities and the students take their work very seriously! Classes are 45 minutes long—with 5, 10, or 15 minute break between each class. I go to school from 8:00 in the morning until 1:35 in the afternoon. Being such a small country, I have been able to see quite a bit ot Denmark! I've even seen Peter a few times! I've also been to West Germany twice. In May, I'll be going on a tour of West Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Belgium, and Holland! I keep busy, and I've learned a great deal already. I've become very “culturalized , seeing many museums, palaces, cathedrals, castles, etc.! The Danish life style is very much the same as ours, so I feel pretty well at home. The language is difficult, but I’m learning. I've had a great year so far, and I'm really looking forward to the rest of it!! Finally, I'd just like to comment on the saying— There is something rotten in the state of Denmark! , by Shakespere. He surely must have been in another world—for there is definitely nothing rotten in the state of THIS Denmark!!! Pas godi pa!
