Whenever we needed help they were near For bake sales, prom and events of the year. Without their guidance we'd never be this far. So to these two we award a big, gold star. Carol Fowlston In '77 to the high school we came. Lowly as freshmen, new the game. Mrs. Baldwin and Mr. Walsh were assigned as guides. To help us through our low and high tides. 3 IN MEMORY OF... Although Jeff and Tom could not accompany us through our high school years, the Class of 1981 will always remember them. As we now find ourselves at the point of starting new lives, friendships seem more important than in the years gone by. Time has softened the hurt of the loss of good friends, though in our hearts and minds the memory is still strong. The world will change and so shall we, and never again to be lived are the times we’ve already had. But, come sunshine or rain for any of this class of ’81, there shall be no forgetting of those who were lost to us too soon. Joan Washington served as vice. B. J. Riven- burg took notes and Linda Hemstrought started out as treasurer, what ended up being the first time any- body ever held the treasury spot for four years. We had a few sock-hops to raise money. During our sophomore year we were under the care of B. J. Rivenburg as president. Karen Dutcher served under her. Carol Fowlston started her three year term as secretary and Linda kept track of our money. In the middle of our sophomore year, Mr. Podraza came as successor to Mr. Maholchic. Our major fund-raiser was the sale of calendars. We attempted a carwash, but to say the least, it rained! B. J. was gladly welcomed back as president our junior year. Renee Rydzewski was second-in-command. The positions of secretary and treasurer stayed with Carol and Linda, respectively. To raise money for Prom we sold magazines and posters. Our theme for Prom was “Babe”, decorated in shades of blue. Renee Ryd- zewski was crowned Queen as she was escorted by Tim Fleming. The title of first princess was given to Cathy Eagan, and Karen Dutcher given the honor of second princess. At the end of our junior year we sadly said good-bye to our two advisors, Mrs. Baldwin and Mr. Walsh. We have dedicated this year’s yearbook to them as a small token of our appreciation for all the help and advice they gave us the three years they were with us. SENIORS at last!!! This year we started out with two new advisors. The old as well as the new have done a great job for us. “Tuesday’s Gone” was the theme of our Homecoming. Carol Kenyon inherited the title of Queen; her King was Vince Schmidt. Linda Cleary was first princess and Patti Palmer was second. Our leader was Linda Small as president; Carla Ortolano backed her up. Carol served her last year as secretary and Linda completed her final year as treasurer. As graduation draws nearer, we gather our memories. One of the best memories to take with us will have to be our “YEAR AT THE TOP!!!” Regenis Qcholarship Winners Top 5 Honor Students — Cathie Crissey. Carol Fowlston, Gwen Kulina. Linda Small. Walsh Wendy Holly Wilson 33 Hej! fran Sveirge, Everything here in Stockholm, Sweden is going really great! It's quite an experience to be in another country studying a different way of lifestyle than you’ve been accustomed to. The only part I don't particularly care for is this harsh Swedish weather. The school I'm going to is more of a preparation for college. It’s between high school and college, which unfortunately means most everyone is stud- ying a great deal and are quite serious. There are 750 pupils in my school. Schools are different here in that there are no special activities or sports involved with school. The last 3 years of school are concentrated into spe- cial lines, such as languages, sciences, or maths. I’m in the language line. (Yes, Mrs. Grimes, I’m taking French!) I live right in the center of Stockholm which I really dig. Whenever I go anywhere I must take a subway or tram. There really is a lot of fun. I really like living in a city after being in such a miniscule town all my life. There’s so much to see and do that there is never a dull moment. Something I've been doing regularly is playing volleyball twice a week with a special club, and a dance class. In general, most teenagers go out on weekends and Wednesday nights. The Swedish people are movie fanatics; they go to at least one movie per week, usually more. They love American movies. Actually, they like anything American. The newest fad here is American sweatshirts, western clothes, boots, and rollerskates. They’re more American than we are! About 30% of the kids in my school have been to the States. The people here have made my stay most enjoyable and I’m looking forward to the rest of my stay!! Take care. Hjorrliga halsningar Margaret Dav — Well I've been here three months now, and I really love it. Denmark may be a small country but it is definitely a beautiful one. It's very charming and there’s so much history in every town or city you visit. The language is different, but I’m learning. I think I’d learn more if everyone didn’t speak English to me! School is much different here. Kids study just about all the time. You wouldn't believe how disciplined they are. Classes are 40 minutes long and there’s a ten minute break between them. As you’ve probably heard. Danes ARE much more free than Americans. I thought I was a pretty free person but it’s taking a while to get used to it all! The food is good and the only different thing to get used to is that there's no McDonald’s around the corner! Other than that, and a few other things, life seems very normal” here. I feel as if I've always been a Dane and I know that a part of me will always keep this year in every day use when I come back. De kaerligsk hilsener til yer alle. Fra Sandy 34 Hello. OACHS I am Mee Anne Bernardo, your Rotary exchange student from Quezon City. Philippines, class of'81. Being a foreign student in another country is very challenging and yet very rewarding especially when there are many changes around you. I am definitely very happy and fortunate to be with a very warm, understanding and friendly people of Oxford. Half of my stay here has already been over and I would like to share my thoughts with you. I love the beautiful snow!” Since my country has a tropical climate, meaning mostly warm the whole year round and just hav- ing a dry and rainy season, we don't have winter and seeing snow for the first time made my whole stay here very interesting. I enjoyed every minute (drop?) of it. School here has also been different for me. For a change I'm glad I didn't have to wear a uniform this time and not having to raise my hand and stand to recite in class. The freedom to choose my courses was also a big change for me. I am enjoying sports here. I am very impressed with how much time the students indulge in sports. So far. I have joined tennis, volleyball, and now I'm trying skiing; and through all these I learned a lot. had a great time, and made new friends. OACHS. now, you are a very essential part of my life, forever! To the administration and teachers, thank you very much for shar- ing your time and knowledge. To my very wonderful host families. Rotarians, and friends, thank you wholeheartedly for every- thing! To my friends, who have made my stay here very interesting, wonderful, warm and memorable, time we spent together, our memories, are all I have to cherish when I go back home. Your friendship encompasses all! Maraming Salamat” (Thank you very much!) The seasons and people go by so fast the only thing I can do is catch them while I'm here! Mee Anne Hej! Last year I was fortunate enough to spend a year exchange in Nykoping. Sweden Nykoping is a city of about 50.000 and is located approximately 70 miles south of Stockholm. It is a very scenic and old place; some of the streets still have cobblestones and it has a very old castle with a very interesting history. School was different and actually advanced compared to our school system. The people in my class were taking classes geared to our second year of college. While in Sweden I traveled a lot and saw a lot of Sweden! I really had a super time. Lyoka till Er! (Good luck to you!) Monica Westerholm 35 Hejsan. I have been here for six months now, and I just can't tell you how glad I am to be here in Oxford. Everyone of you has been so nice and helpful to me. Thanks to you my stay has been and is great. I am very happy for the opportunity to compare my home country. Sweden, to yours. The differences are not that big though. One thing that amazed me was that you are so open and easygoing. The climate here and in Sweden is pretty much the same, except for your summer; that is much hotter than ours. While I have been here I have gotten the chance to play football and go skiing. Football is not a European sport, so this was the first time as you probably could tell. Skiing is my greatest hobby or sport, and I am very happy that I was able to get to go skiing. I like Greek Peak a lot, and I hope I will have the chance to go again, even if it looks like we won't get so much more of a winter. I don’t know yet if I will go out for any sport this coming spring; but if I do, it will be baseball, that also is a non-European sport. So, you'd better watch out for those balls. I just want to thank you for making my year so great. My best wishes and God bless you all. Yours truly. Christian Hi Everyone. Coming to Oxford certainly was a change of environment for me. In Perth, my hometown, it never gets below freezing and on summer days the temperature usually stays about 90 F. So, to see snow and feel such freezing cold really was a novel experi- ence. and it took me a while to get used to it. Now that I have, however, I really love the snow, though not the cold. I enjoy going snow-mobiling, skiing, ice-skating, and toboganning. The countryside is also very pretty when there has been a fresh snowfall, and it is so different from home. School is slightly different here too. Back home we had eight periods every day with no study halls. We also didn’t have such a wide range of subjects to study or the ability to make so many choices, as a lot of classes we had were compulsory. We had a lot heavier work load than here. So, I really quite like going to school here as there are more fun classes and less work. Also, as we had to wear uniforms to school and for physical education back home, it's nice to be able to choose the clothes I wear to school here. You also have more outside activities offered through the school than we did back home. Thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome in Oxford. The friendliness and smiles with which I have been greeted have really made me feel at home here. I have really enjoyed my stay here so far; and I am sure the rest of my stay will be as enjoyable. 36 Love, Meredith Dibden 8 President: Jackie Race Vice-President: Lydia Mannion Secretary: Dotty Sheldon Treasurer: Heidi Russell K.
