There is an excitement and anticipation of starting a new life and the sadness of leaving old friends. Looking back at the history of the class of 1980, we can find many memories. In our freshman year we were headed by Vince Schmidt, with Lindy Wright as v.p., Jolinda Nelson as treasurer, and Fred Cotwald was class secretary. As sophomores Vince Schmidt served a second term as president with Rusty Foster backing him up. Teri Post took care of the money, and Jolinda Nelson served as secretary. We started making money by selling stationery and having sock hops. Joanne Race was class president in our junior year, and Rich Marks was second-in-command. Teri Post was treasurer and Robbin Rogers was secretary. The year got kicked off with our successful magazine sale. We sold enough to win a stereo, much to the dismay of the cafeteria ladies. Our Junior Prom Queen was Teri Post, Rusty Foster was King and the Princesses were Sigrid Mortensen and Anne Jenness. In our senior year Dale Dejong took charge with Flooty Marks serving his second term as v.p. Flat McKenzie was elected treasurer and Anne Jenness was secretary. Our Homecoming Queen was Karin Logerfo; Pat Farrell was King. Princesses were Joanne Race and Debbie Van Brunt. Since my arrival on the 16th of August, I have had so many new and wonderful experiences The time really seems to fly! I like your school, which has much more spare time activities for students than school in Finland. I was a mem- ber of tennis team and am going to join ski club and per- haps gymnastics. School is also so much different that it makes it really interesting. In Finland, most of the subjects are compulsory and we don't have any study halls. We have schedules for every day and usually six or seven 45 minute long periods with 15 minute breaks between every period during a day. Here you can choose your subjects and make school fun, if you want. I was surprised with the vast subject choice that the school of Oxford has and I have tried to take different subjects that we don't have in Finland. I think I am getting into your school system now (except I almost always forget to sign into my study halls!) thanks to many friendly and helpful people! I came here in the fall and saw the beautiful hills of Che- nango County just turned color. I live in north Finland, on the Artie Circle and most of our trees are pine trees, but you can see that 'color splendour' on the earth, when all the plants and bushes turn color. I have heard you have a long winter. In Lapland, we get a steady snow in October and it melts off in May. Usually the temperature of the days is around -20 F, but it can be even -40 F. Since we have a long winter many of our hobbies are winter activities and I just love cross country skiing! So l am having a great time here in Oxford. People have made it enjoyable. Thank you. I am really looking forward to the rest of my stay here. Iloisin mielin eteenpain! (Go ahead in cheerful spirits!) With love, Johanna Mutka Finland Dear Teachers and Students, Hello! I hope that when you read this letter, you will remember it is now very difficult for me to write in English, but with the help of my dictionary, I'm going to write. I'm very happy in America. I like very much the Village of Oxford. It is very pretty, the people are very friendly, and the landscape is wonderful, but the cold I don't like. It is the first time I've been in a cli- mate this cold. You know that my country is very warm. I like the school very much. It is very different than in Peru where we study separately, girls and boys in different buildings. School begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. In Peru we have uniforms for school and physical education. My American families have been very good; they have helped me very much with my English. I will say good-bye now. I will always remember you. If you wish writing, my address is Maria Andrande Ramos Las Sidras — 41 Urb. Miraflores — Castilla Piura, Peru South America P.S. Thank you for everything! Maria 31 DO SENIORS EVER WORK!? Let's be serious! Tess and Pat I just saw a 10!” 32 Abbott's little helper Roughest, toughest long-hair we know.
