Editors: Kathy O'Connor Jill Nelson Advisors: Jeanne B. Walsh Lynn Snedeker Cover design: William Gotwald dedication In appreciation for her assistance, the Class of 77 dedicates this yearbook to Mrs. Eloise Baldwin. For the past four years, Mrs. Baldwin served as our head advisor. Although she had never worked as an advisor before, she never hesitated to give her time and energies in helping us. We never could have accomplished what we did without her determination and eagerness. To look up and not down, to look forward and not back, to look out and not in, and to lend a hand.” Edward Everett Hall Thank you, Mrs. Baldwin 2 in memory of... We the class of 77 wish to remember our friend, Betty Jean Rice. We all lost a good person when Betty lost her most precious possession ... her life. Not many people knew her that well, but those of us who did really liked her. Betty will always be a part of our memories. M.M. 3 administration Paul T. Everything here is just great. At first I never thought I'd make it when all I heard was people speaking Portugese. Sounded like Chinese to me! Actually, I didn’t know the difference. But I seem to be picking up the language pretty well now. I even introducted the word “la groovez down here. Just think, soon it it will be internationally known! I live in Taubati, Brazil. The city has 180,000 inhabitants, so it is quite a change from Oxford. My school has 4,000 students with 4 shifts. I attended the morning shift from 7 AM - 11 AM. But now I am on summer vacation till March. In January I am going to visit Fatima de Souza for 4 weeks. In case you don’t remember, she is a former Rotary exchange student who went to Oxford. When I return, I’m off to Rio de Janeiro. It's really hot here, usually between 95'-100'. It rains about five times a week. When it does, I could swear the Amazon has decided to change routes! At first there were a lot of customs which I needed to get used to. But believe me, maids and chauffeurs were not one of them. That custom was super easy to get used to. Brasilians eat rice and beans for every meal. Ugh! I guess I’d never make a true Brasilian; I just can’t eat that. After you see rice and beans everyday, it makes the school cafeteria look like a first class restaurant! I'll see you soon, la groovez , love— CB Brian Walsh Well, I have been in the Philippines for seven months, and my life here is wonderful. I am living in Metro Manila which is much different from the small town of Oxford. There is so much to see and do in the big city. Besides Manila, I have been all over the island of Luzon. The weather here is hot all year round. My Christmas was sunny and in the 80's; it was very nice. I did kind of miss the snow, which I hear you have a lot of this year. I have had many great experiences including being an extra in the American movie Apocolypse Now . The Filipino people are so nice and are always willing to help. I'm sure the rest of my stay will be wonderful. I have learned to love this country and its people, but I am looking forward to coming home in June. Mabuhay (Long Life), Brian 81 ROBERT NIEDERER I arrived in Germany on July 28. During my stay here, I'm living in the young city of Krefeld. It’s 600 years old and has 220,000 people. My part of Germany, along the Rhine, is mostly flat, but my house is located outside of the city on one of the hills. There is a big windmill 50 yards from my house. Needless to say, the life style here is different than in Oxford. The German people are really great. While they sometimes are the busy, efficient people in the movies, they are usually very fun-loving and relaxed. I really like Ger- many and the people, but I'm looking forward to coming back to Oxford. Robert Niederer KATHY FOWLSTON Life in India is a contrast to life in America. However, the sights here are not as bad as everyone imagines. Many people here are poor, but are honest. One of- ten sees houses made from old billboards and have only one room. Most families are vegetarian, eating no meat, fish, or eggs. Foods are highly spiced and we drink buffalo milk. Soon after I arrived the monsoons started. Streets were flooded so much, we were unable to go to school for a few days. I started at a college but left there to teach basic math to fifth standard students. As you must surmise, the standards here are very low. English is spoken by my host families but Gujarati is their native tongue. Others speak Hindii so I'm learning both languages. Indian women wear sarees of bright colors. I find them very comfortable. During our school vacation, I went on a three-week tour to Kashmir in northern India. We visited Delhi, the Taj Mahal in Agra, and the Himalaya Mountains. It was cooler and more comfortable than Surat’s 100°. Another time I went to the east coast and have visited Bombay several times. I wish each one of you could visit India. It is such an experience and I am lear- ning so much. I’ve come to love the people and will always jump at the chance to come back. Aujo, Kathy 82 PAULA COSTA When I first came to Oxford, I was in awe of the beautiful snow. In Brazil it is warm. Most of the year, it never snows. My city is Sao Jos6 do Rio Pr§to, S3o Paulo. It is much larger than Oxford, but I like your small village, too. I find all the people in Oxford are friendly and very, very nice. I am one of a large family. I have two brothers and two sisters; also many aunts, uncles, and cousins. My father is an agricultural engineer, and my mother is a housewife. My brother and cousin were also exchange students to America. They had told me so much about the United States, that I knew I had to visit it. I enjoy meeting new people and learning languages. I feel English is important, and I’m learning new words every day. I hope everyone enjoys being with me as much as I love seeing all of you. Paula MIKE MAR AM BA On August 27, 1976, at about four in the afternoon, I arrived in huge Ox- ford, U.S.A. I never thought I'd be able to survive in a small town. All my life I've lived in the city of Manila, which has a population of about 7 million com- pared to Oxford's 3 thousand. It has really been a beautiful change, and I've enjoyed every minute of my stay here. Like everyone in Oxford, my host families (the Walsh's, Marso’s, and Bat- terman's) have all been super to me. They've made me feel so at home that not once have I gotten homesick. They’ve taken me to so many places in the area, and even to other places like Boston and Plattsburg. Another great thing is the High School. I’ve never enjoyed school so much in my life. It's set up in such a way that you learn and have fun at the same time. Back home the standards are so high that it's all work and there is not much time for other school activities like sports. Speaking of sports, I've really gotten a thrill out of going to the football and basketball games. They don't have football in the Philippines, and it's a blast watching guys bang up each other's heads. With basketball it's a different story, it’s the No. 1 sport back home. It would have been allright if I joined the varsity team, but I later found out I wasn't good enough. Luckily, Coach Cooper made me scorekeeper, which still made me feel part of the team. Like in football, it was a really ex- citing season; practically every game was a thriller. If I were asked what the biggest change I encountered in Oxford was, I'd say the weather. By coincidence, the year I'm in the States is the country's worst winter. Where I live, there is no snow; temperature is normally in the 90's. The lowest it's ever gotten is 64 degrees. In Oxford, 64 degrees is a heatwave. In a few months I leave Oxford. I've had such a great time and have made so many close friends, that it's going to be extremely difficult for me to leave. I just hope that someday I will come back to the beautiful, scenic, friendly town of Oxford.
