BLACKHAWK YEARBOOK CONTENTS: Faculty Special Evants Activities Grades 9-12 Advertising In Memory of... We the class of ’76, dedicate this yearbook to a class- mate who was a big part of all of our lives. For the joy, and understanding, and compassion that she gave to others... We are, all of us, molded and remolded, by those who have loved us; no love, no friendship can ever cross the path of our destiny without leaving some mark upon it forever. Thank you Nancy, for the mark you left on us. Good luck on your new journey, Nancy. We wish you the best. You have closed one door, only to open a new one, maybe even a better one. C.S. 2 Linda had many beautiful thoughts and ideas. She had a very special feeling about life and lived each day to the fullest. Linda said and did things to make this a better world. She was a kind, warm, friendly person. Linda wanted to become an art teacher, not only because she loved art, but because she loved children. One of Linda’s quotes takes on a very special meaning. “If people only realized how much they should appreciate each new day of good health, they would never say, anoth- er day, big deal.” Linda will be missed for a long time by people who knew her and loved her. Ill tell you the truth; it was no bowl of cherries. I don’t think I’ve ever been so nervous and scared since I hit Matt, my little brother, over the head with a bat, and my mom found out about it. Every five minutes I ran in the bathroom on the plane and had a nervous breakdown. I’d finally had it when the stewardess announced we would be landing in Manila in ten minutes. That’s when I started screaming and ripping my hair out. I figured if they thought I was mad, they would send me home. That’s how my first foster father saw me, mad and looking like a witch. He took me home anyway, and I met my family at six in the morning. I couldn’t eat (too nervous), and I started to lose weight. Then I became afraid I would fade away so I started to eat and eat. That was the biggest mistake I’ve ever made in my life. I finally got adjusted to my school, which isn’t bad if you want to be a nun. I really do enjoy the school now. The girls are so sweet and would do any tiling for me, a quality most Filipinos possess. My families have taken me all over Tuzon, the northern part of the Philippines, and they have really made the most of doing it. While I’ve been here, I’ve sung quite a bit, mainly for Rotary Gubs but some other places too. Frank Sinatra wrote to me the other day, and he wants me to join him on his Giristmas special; too bad I won’t be around. Speaking of Giristmas, mine was beautiful. I was sick on Giristmas Eve, but I snapped out of it by the 25th. Then I ate so much, I was sick again. On New Year’s Eve we were all being so loud (not me, of course), the priest had to remind us we were supposed to be hearing mass. I had never heard mass on New Year’s Eve, but there’s always a first time for everything. I’ve learned to love the Philippines very much, and I love the people just as much as I love the Americans. It’s a beautiful country, and if anyone wants to go somewhere special for a vacation, this is the place to come. Mubuhay (Long life) to you all. Susie Johnson Hi, Well, I have been in Holland now for almost 6 months. It is a beautiful country despite the flatness of the land and the 8 days of rain a week!! I live in Schagen which is in North Holland approximately a 45 minute drive north of Amsterdam. The town is about the size of Norwich! The center of town is built around the two churches. There is a huge farmers’ market held three times a week where things can be bought much cheaper than in the shopping mall!! The school I attend is the largest school in Holland that is run by the government! There are over 2,000 students in what is equivalent to our high school. The kids at school here spend 5 to 6 hours a night on homework, as they must learn many facts, figures, and important dates and people. I have made many friends since I arrived in July, and now it will be hard to leave in June. The thought that everyone wears wooden shoes and that there are many windmills soon left me. The farmers still wear wooden shoes, but most other people wear shoes just like we do. There are windmills but not behind every house and corner. It is a beautiful country, and I know it will be just gorgeous when the tulip fields come into bloom in late March. Since I have been here, I have travelled around Holland, seen parts of West Germany, Belgium, and Luxemburg. I am also going to London with my school class and to Paris with the Rotary Gub. As you can see, I am having a great time. I do miss Oxford, though, and am looking forward to coming home in June. Tot Ziens, Joy 22 Oxford in winter is very different from Strathalbyn in summer. Every- thing here is white and cold; in Australia everything is brown and hot with good swimming and surfing weather. I live in a small town much like Oxford called Strathalbyn which is in South Australia. I attended M.L.C., a girls’ boarding school in Adelaide, (the state capital), where I completed my matriculation which is equiva- lent to senior year here. On my return 1 hope to be able to further my studies in the field of law. 1 have found the people here are very friendly and make me feel very much at home. One of two differences that have struck me most noticeably is where 1 have tried to cross the road. In Australia we drive on the opposite side of the road. I have found that since I have been here, I take longer to cross the road, and when I do, I am still lucky to make it safely to the other side. The other difference is in the houses in Australia. The houses are usually of brick or stone and only one level, a type of house I haven’t seen since I have been here. Thank you, everyone, for making me feel at home and making it possible for me to experience the American way of life from many different angles!! Susie Rowe r • v y •M ] 'm On January 19th I arrived in the USA, for one year: my home in Argentina. Since my first day I began to see the great difference there is between my country and yours. My life was different from here, maybe it’s because my city (San Luis) is 18 times bigger than Oxford and as a consequence, people don’t live the same way. I have liked Oxford since the first moment (in spite of the snow that covered it during long periods). Oxford is an oasis (between the machines that populate the country) full of woods, deer and squirrels. The scholastic system here is not the same as in Argentina. We arrive in the school at 8:30 in winter and 7:45 in summer, and we go out at 12:45 and 12:15 respectively. We don't have study halls but we have 5 minutes for rest between every period. In the afternoon (two times a week) we go back to school for gym classes. Throughout the year we take twelve or thirteen subjects together, not like your 5,6, or 7 in one semester. With respect to choosing subjects: we can't. (“Would you like to have same system?”) This is a description of the majority of the schools in Argentina. 1 don’t want to express that my country is better than yours, nor your country is better than mine, only that they are different. 1 like the United States very much, and its people. I’m sure that I’ll never forget this year with you. Oxford Academy and Central School: my best wishes for you. Maria Susana Estrada Susan Rowe Maria Estrada We the class of 1976, in order to form a more perfect union, elected: President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Article 1 Section I Freshman Year The Honorable Terri Lewis Bret Dalton Nancy Jones Nancy Hatton Section II To insure our domestic tranquility we sold combs, and secured our posterity for years to come. HEAR YE! HEAR YE! THE SENIOR YEAR! Listen, my children, and you shall hear. Of the midnight tapping of a barrel of beer On the twenty-sixth of June in seventy-six. Everyone will remember ouryearfull of tricks. We said to our class, let’s elect Jennifer Race, She’ll keep us going at a really fast pace Brian Walsh will be second in command He’ll give Jennifer a good helping hand With quill in hand we have Carol Parker, She helped us through when things got darker Nancy Hatton has taken us from rags’ to riches' She pulled us out of our many ditches. On the evening of November 8th in ’75 “Could It Be Magic” brought us all alive With Tena Quinn as queen she made quite a sight And Marty Bos worth as king filled us all with delight Our Homecoming colors were brown, orange, and yellow With pumpkins and cornstalks the scene was quite mellow And now at last to this year’s senior play, A “Hillbilly Weddin’” is well on its’ way We thank many people for its’ smashing success Through the thick and thin we thought it a mess Section II As members of our Junior Prom of Representatives elected May 17, 1975; Nancy Jones was installed as queen accompanied by Edward Youngs. Following them in the Court were, Debbie Holmes 1st princess, and Roberta Wil- liams 2nd princess. Colors in our Prom of Representatives were dark blue, light blue, and white. As we come to the end of our final year Everyone’s eyes had a wee little tear As we now graduate, we won’t say goodbye We’ll only just leave with a wave and a sigh. 24 26 No wonder you can pucker so good. 27 Brian, the busy homemaker. Isn’t that cute! Ill : a This is better than a formal picture any day. Here we arc again! Cathy’s caught again. What’s up there, Denise? This year, the government ran the new conces- sion stand, which has turned out to be very profitable. They gathered ads to be shown in cooperation with our Cable T.V. sports broad- cast, and sponsored a Mexican foster child. These are only a few of die Government’s accomplishments. None of this would have been possible, had it not been for the support of Annabelle Smith. To Mrs. Smith, they give their thanks. Laurie Franklin. Secretary; Tena Quinn, Vice-President; Terri Lewis.
