Mrs. Swertfager has been with us since 8th grade. She taught us English that year. In our Freshman year, she switched to Latin and also became our head advisor. She kept us out of trouble until our Junior year, when our class presented Nights in White Satin, our prom. Mrs. Swertfager was the main force behind our success that night. We have really appreciated her throughout the years but most of all during our Senior year. She has been the one who bailed us out of all our troubles. So we say, “Thank you from us all - The Class of 1974”. 24 KNEELING: T. O’Reflly-Vice President. STANDING: S. Fairchild Treasurer, D. Hatton-Secretary, L. Win ter-President. Class History The Class of 1974 was led in their Freshman year by President Rich Boyer, Vice President Jeff Finch, Secretary Wendy Ortolano, and Treasurer Carol Cummings. Our first Freshman activity was a success when we won Second prize in the Halloween parade with our float, “Halloween of the Future.” We also sponsored a sock hop and a slave day that year. In our Sophomore year we were led by President Jeff Finch, Vice President Janice Stone, Secretary Debbie Ard- ron, and Treasurer Judy Loughren. In October of that year, we sponsored a dance with WENE’s Doug Track as the DJ. We sold candles at Christmas and had another slave day. In our Junior year we were led by President Betsy Maholchic, Vice President Wendy Ortolano, Secretary Eileen Hemstrought, and Treasurer Sue Fairchild. Our rec- ord magazine sale netted us a profit of $ 1750. Later we had two sock hops. On May 19, 1973, we gave our spectacular Junior prom, “Nights In White Satin.” Dianne Hatton, escorted by Terry Race, was crowned Queen. First Princess was Judy Loughren. Second Princess was Bonnie String- ham. The court consisted of Kathie Stringham, Leslie Carey, Kathy Simpson, and Susan Schwager. Charles Fritz- ler and his band provided the music. We are now in our Senior year. Our president is Lisa Winter, our vice president is Tim O’Reilly, our secretary is Dianne Hatton, and our treasurer is Sue Fairchild. On November 10th, we sponsored our Homecoming dance, “Autumn Splendor.” Cindy Nichols, escorted by Jan Win- ner, was crowned Queen. First Princess was our Brazilian exchange student, Fatima de Souza. Second Princess was Janice Stone. Brotherhood provided the music. Other Senior activities were our banquet on June 20th and gradu- ation on June 21st. Our class motto is “In Discord, there is Unity.” Our class flower is the violet. Our class song is “Saturday Night’s Alright”, written by Elton John. 26 Top Honor Students Betsy Mahokhic Susan Fairchild Erk. Photography by Kathy Marso 49 Exchange Students Hello folks back home- 1 hope everyone has been having a jim-dandy year and that the class of ’74 has been living up to its notorious past. Now, I’m sure all are on the edge of their chairs waiting for the long commentary about free-sex and tall, beautiful blonds. 1 will have to disappoint you. Sorry, a better idea would be to imagine a Viking ship on its way to North America . .. The Swedes love the out-of-doors and fresh air. And since 1 have also become used to hopping on my nifty little bicycle and pedaling to and from school in 14 cm of snow and -10 c weather, I’m beginning to suspect 1 have got some Viking blood in me also. Definition Swede (soid) s-Characterized as being of a conscientious, well-orga- nized and perfectionist breed. Very cold and untalkative upon first acquaintance. Friendliness gradually improves with time and, on special occasions, intake of alcohol. Family unit predominant and remnants of old-fashioned etiquette still in practice. In closing, 1 would really like to say something 1 consider important. There are two sides to the Atlantic Ocean. In essence, America is just a child of Europe, and, without that plane ticket for $268.00, 1 never would have realized that. Hjartliga Halsningar, Betsy P.S. Dorthe Ring says “hello” and so do Liselotte, Peter, and my friend Gail-(another New Yorker) Dear Fellow Blackhawks, Living here in Sweden is teaching me many things that I could never learn elsewhere. Mostly I believe it is the great appreciation for my family, schooling, and America. Because 1 am so separated from them, I have found their true value. Life is not so different compared to home — just another language buzzing around my cars (which, by the way, I’m getting fairly good at). School is, however, quite a bit different trom little Oxford. I am attending Sweden’s second largest gymnasium, a total of 2,000 students in the last three years of high school. I am in a class of 30 students and we attend all the same classes together, including the following: Swedish, physics, chemistry, biology, society, philosophy, math, religion and one of either French, English, or German. The science department is just fantastic and the labs are always a source of surprise and fun to me the equipment we can use and some of the methods of teaching. The relationships between teachers and students is on a businesslike basis, no joking or fooling around. There are no sports or clubs connected with the school either. In other words, school is kind of tiring and boring at times. HOWEVER, if you are placed among students as GREAT as the ones I know, fun can be made no matter what the situation. 1 live on the archipelago of Karlskrona, one of the most beautiful summer places in the world. I have also the nicest Swedish people to stay with, and they take tip-top care of me, too. They do everything from keeping me well-fed (Swedish food is just wonderful!) to getting me a ticket to see Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf. I think that this is the most rewarding year that I have lived and I feel that there is no one luckier than me!!!!!!!!! I only wish that every person could have the chance to go to another land for a year, because it is the most worthwhile experience that man can have.
