Homecoming 1968 Whispering Autumn 18 Greg Walker and the Rock Garden furnished the music for the dance. The class of 1969 presented Whispering Autumn, the 1968 Homecoming, on October 19, 1968. The Black- hawk's victorious football game helped to make Homecoming a very special memory. Highlighting the dance were last year's queen and king, Chris Hart and Jim Lobdell, who crowned the 1968 Homecoming Queen Carolyn Cheseboro and her escort David Beckwith. The court included first princess Sue Rood, escorted by Rodney Bosworth, and second princess Patti Van Guilder, escorted by Charles Brigham, Marsha Blum and Tom Fowlston, Mary Preston and Tim Fowlston, Lynne Schmidt and Ron Winner, Kathy Loughren and Ron Behe, Diane Tansey and George Howe, Vikki Titchner and Martin Tefft, Elaine Lashway and Larry Coveil, and Helen Popovczak and Matt Sherman, and Connie Holbrook and John James. King David and Queen Carolyn, the 1968 royal couple, sit before past king and queen Jim and C hris. 19 Frosty sensation The lights were low, the beat was loud, and the mood was soul swaying. All this plus the fast moving sound of the Bethnall Green made the 1969 Sno-ball a swinging success. 21 Oriental Evening The class of 1969 presented their Junior Prom Oriental Even- ing featuring the Silver Crown Orchestra on May 25, 1968. The fantasy of colors covering the gigantic fan accented the throne and set the mood for the coming excitement of the evening and the coronation. To climax the festivities, Dorothy Hill and Jay Moore were crowned Queen and King by last year’s Queen Debbie Rice. QUESTION: Peter, as reported before, you are from the Netherlands, but would you tell our readers where exactly you are from? ANSWER: My hometown is Deventer and it is situated in the middle-east of the Netherlands, about two hours driving east of Amsterdam and about one and a half hours west of the German border. QUESTION: Do you find the people very different here? ANSWER: No, I don't think people over here are much different from the Dutch. If an American with a Dutch name like yours walked around the Netherlands, nobody would notice you are from the United States. QUESTION: What have you done, since you have been here, that was of interest? ANSWER: Well, of course, I have learned some English. Since Dutch is spoken only in the Netherlands. Belgium, and South Africa and since the Netherlands through its trade is a very international nation, you have to know English, French and German if you want to achieve something. I am glad I am picking up some English in America. 1 have met some interesting people and made some fascinating trips, and of course, I have come to school sometimes. QUESTION: Do you think our school is very different? ANSWER: Yes, school is very different. In Oxford all students go to the same school. In the Netherlands, we have six different types of high schools, so every Dutch student attends a type of high school that fits his intelli- gence. I finished my schooling in the Netherlands. I think education in the United States and the Netherlands is very much alike. We have to take a lot more courses and we have to work harder, but on the other hand you can take many more interesting and funny courses. QUESTION: What is the best or your favorite finding in the United States? ANSWER: My favorite finding was cereal for breakfast. I am going to take that over to the Netherlands. Of course, Halloween is funny too, although shaving cream is quite expensive over here. QUESTION: Do you find our social life much different? Sports? ANSWER: Well, I am from a city with a very rich cultural life, a lot of movie theaters, discotheques, cafes, and youth groups; whereas, you live in a small village. Therefore, social life is very different, yes. We do not have sports in school. We have to join private sports clubs; therefore, you do more sports. QUESTION: Do you think Oxford is a good representative of the United States and do the attitudes reflect those you feel are the attitudes of the United States in general? ANSWER: I could not say, simply because I do not know much about other people in other areas. Oxford might be a good representative of rural America, but I would not bet my Dutch head on it. I hope I will be able to answer these questions before I return to my mother country after seeing more of this country. Peter VanderLaan 58 Class History We, the class of 1969, were the first to complete our entire high school education in the new Jr.-Sr. High School. As Freshmen we elected the following officers: president: Diane Tansey, vice-president: Mike Race, secretary: Sue Rood, and treasurer: Thedia Davies. In our Sophomore year, we started filling our treasury by selling refreshments at all the home football games. At Christmas time, we added more to the fund by selling decorations and card holders. That year, our class was led by president: Nick Sylstra, vice-president: Patti Van Guilder, secretary: Nancy Mayhew and treasurer: Mary Preston. Our Junior Year was a big one. As officers we had Patti VanGuilder as president, Dorothy Hill as vice- president, Carolyn Chesebro as secretary, and Dennis Carey as treasurer. Our magazine sale put us far ahead financially. The top salesmen were Albert Franklin and Andy Finch. That year, three of our classmates were tapped for the Honor Society. They were Susan Cooper, Edward Law- ton, and Barbara Lorimer. To climax our successful year we had our Junior Prom, Oriental Evening, with music by the Silver Crown Orchestra. The setting was decorated with pastel shades of green, yellow, pink, aqua, and lavender. It was accented by a ten foot fan and an oriental bridge. The evening was highlighted by the crowning of the King and Queen, Jay Moore and Dorothy Hill. Princesses were Kathy Loughren, escorted by Ron Behe, and Carolyn Chesebro, escorted by Andy Finch. At last wc have reached our goal. We are Seniors. Our officeis are Mary Preston as president, Tom Fitzgerald as vice-president, Dorothy Hill as secretary, and Jim Maynard as treasurer. The first big event of the year was the Homecoming Dance, Whispering Autumn. The music was by Gregg Walker and the Rock Garden. The Queen was Carolyn Chesebro escorted by David Beckwith. Runners-up were Sue Rood escorted by Rodney Bosworth and Patti VanGuilder escorted by Charles Brigham. The victorious foot- ball game over Unatego helped to make this a very special weekend. On November 16, the Seniors put on their play, Crammercy Ghost, directed by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ander- son. It was a very enjoyable event with many ghostly moments that won’t be forgotten. Our Freshman advisors were Mr. Mortcnscn, Mr. Rader, and Miss Mowry. From our sophomore to our Senior year they were Mrs. Detweiler, Mr. Nelson, and Mr. Mortensen. We would like to thank them for a job well done ! 59 Boy's and Girl's State Tom Fitzgerald, Helen Popovczak, NickSylstra. The play told the story of a young journalist (Duffy Hill) who inherits a ghost, Nathaniel Coombes (Pat Phinney), and has trouble explaining him to her fiance (Andy Finch) and a newspaper reporter (Douglas Genung). Supporting cast members were: Barbara Lorimer, Willa Hewitt, Rich Seehausen, Steve Gustin, Charlie Brigham, Mary Preston, Kathy Loughren and Patti Van Guilder. 80 Director—Mr. Robert Anderson The Drama Club this year has nearly doubled its membership, along with getting a new' and talented director, Mr. Robert Anderson of Norwich. The program itself has also widened to include a senior play, a three-act play, and several one-act plays, some of which were taken to competition at Afton and Cortland. The program also carried out successfully the new idea of having a drama program in the summer consisting of two three-act plays and several well known films.
