Ae 7963 BtcickUawk Volume IX Edited, by the Yearbook Association Oxford Academy and Central School Oxford' New York A ctivities Foreword On June 24, 1963 the graceful pillars flanking the entrance to O.A.C.S. will wit- ness the departure of the last senior class to be graduated from this building. Septem- ber will find new faces and old in unfamiliar surroundings. But memories of the old will linger. We’ll recall slaving over term papers for sen- ior English, probing the intricacies of government in social studies, coping with Latin roots and French grammar. We'll remember permeating the building with noxious fumes from chemistry lab, singing lustily in chorus, and parading the football field with the band. We'll recollect the football games we won and handily forget the ones we lost. We'll picture mentally the capers of the cheerleaders at the crucial moments of the games. Our mind's eye will project the mob scenes outside the cafeteria at noon, the crush and chatter in the halls between classes, the crowded buses and the long snowy rides home in winter, the Christmas concerts, the carol singing in the halls, the proms which highlighted the year. These are the memories to be treasured as we bid farewell to the old with all its traditions and look forward to the challenge and the promise of the new. 3 The hundreds of students to whom Mrs. Griffin taught Latin and English during her many years at O.A.C.S., and the faculty with whom she served, will long honor her memory. Mrs. Ida Griffin Mrs. Ruth Payne Mrs. Payne will long be re- membered as an outstanding teacher. She inspired her pupils to do their best. No one has ever given more time and effort to her work. Miss Winifred Milan The mainstay of the school office, constant while other school personnel came and drift- ed away, Miss Milan devoted over 25 years to keeping the of- fice functioning smoothly. Everyone wishes her a busy and happy retirement. 4 ministration MR. ERNEST G. YOUMANS District Superintendent of Schools MR. GLENN D. Senior Honors Jane Holbrook Salutatorian Jane O'Wyatt V aledictorian 25 William Root Boys' State Sherrill McGrath Girls' State Class History We greeted our first year in high school with some doubts and high hopes, eagerly anticipating our first formal dance in high school, the annual Snow Ball. Tom Frank was class President, Steve Rice served as vice-president, Connie Beckwith was secre- tary and Ken Tucker, treasurer. Our first venture into fund raising found us staging a financially successful record hop with the assistance of our advisors, Mr. Vogelg- sang, Mrs. Barlow, and Mrs. Jeffords. Sophomore status increased our self-confidence and we sponsored another success- ful class dance. Our officers that year were Bill Root, president, Jane O’Wyatt, vice- president, and Betsy Castaldy, treasurer. Connie Money replaced Clifford Cummings as secretary after Clifford moved away. We acquired new advisors, Miss Mowry, Mr. Tefft and Mr. Vogelgsang. Selecting our class rings made us feel terribly superior in our junior year. We were busy selling magazines to help defray expenses for our wonderful Junior Prom, Blue Hawaii. Mrs. Detweiler and Miss Mowry were our faculty advisors and our offi- cers were Ronnie Beckwith, president, Dave Race, vice-president, Judy Clark, sec- retary, and Carolyn Miles, treasurer. Although we had frequently doubted its arrival, our Senior year finally loomed on the horizon. Ronnie remained as our president, with Zoe Carkuff second-in-command; Carolyn Miles continued as custodian of our finances and Connie Money took over class secretary. Mr. Buhner joined Mrs. Detweiler and Miss Mowry to guide us through our Senior year. We sold pins and candy galore to raise money for our class banquet and for our commencement caps and gowns which we chose in red for the girls and black for the boys. Graduation cards and announcements were pored over and hotly discussed; class colors, lavender and white were chosen and the orchid designated as our class flower. Now we await graduation and as we leave these famil- iar surroundings to enter a new phase, be it college, marriage or industry, we will endeavor to remember our class motto, The path of duty is the way to glory.
