Dedication ft MISS WINIFRED MILAN THE Senior Class dedicates the 1955 Spotlight to Miss Winifred Milan, secretary to the principal, whose untiring effort has helped to keep our school running smoothly and efficiently. Having served our school for twenty years, Miss Milan performs general office duties such as filing, typing, and attending to the multitude of correspondence. In spite of her many official duties, she is never too busy to lend a helping hand to any student, teacher or school employee who seeks aid or information in carrying out his work. Miss Milan's job is not confined to the school year but includes taking the census and making out census cards in the summer. As hostess for Oxiord Academy, she receives all our guests; and they undoubtedly leave with a favorable impression, brought about by her friendly and helpful attitude. Miss Milan helps so many people and solves so many problems that an expression often heard among teachers and students alike is, Ask Miss Milan-she'll know! 3 MR. JAMES A. JOHNSON MRS. We elected Richard DeSalvo president, Patricia Castaldy vice-president, Ann McGowan secretary, and Elissa Sheets treasurer. During this year we sold Christmas wreaths and held a bake sale. This was the beginning of our class fund which we knew would be used in our activities during the four years of high school. In the fall of '52, we gathered together for our sophomore year under the guidance of the same advisors. Again we elected Richard DeSalvo president, and Elissa Sheets treasurer. New officers were Maurice Ingraham vice-president, and Betty Nichols secretary. This year we started to discuss the possibility of a senior trip, but we learned that the policy of the school had changed and that these trips were to be discontinued. Then we decided to have a yearbook. In May, we held a block dance on the blacktop behind the school which was very well-attended by grades 7-12. This dance.was part of a social schedule set up by the Student Council. We entered our junior year in '53 under the supervision of Mrs. Marble, Mrs. Nassar, Mr. Richmond and Mr. Batterman. We did it again! For the third time our class elected Richard DeSalvo president, and Elissa Sheets treasurer. Other officers elected were Donna Jones, vice-president, and Carolyn Wackford, secretary. The highlights of this year were selecting our class rings and planning and decorating for the Junior Prom. We finally chose our rings from the Balfour Company and the theme, Evening in Paris, for the prom. Much work was done on this prom, and we chose our queen from a selected group of girls in the junior and senior classes. Donna Jones, one of our juniors, was elected. The staff for the yearbook was chosen and some of the work was started. Our money in the treasury was in- creased by the sale of magazines, and we also sold tickets for a performance sponsored by the Rotary. At last, we accomplished a long-awaited dream when, in the fall of '54, the senior class was assigned to the big study hall where we were all together for the first time with Mr. Richmond, our homeroom teacher. We also had Mrs. Marble and Mrs. Ward to help us through this year. Again, and for the last time we chose Richard DeSalvo president, and Elissa Sheets treasurer. Donna Jones was re-elected vice-president, and Betty Nichols, secretary. This was to be another busy year, since early in October we started rehearsals for the senior play. Mother Is a Freshman, which was presented on November 18. Next we selected our commencement announcements from the Balfour Company. Then we chose our class motto, The Virture Lies in the Struggle, not the Prize, our class colors, blue and silver, and our class flower, a rose. The rnoney earned this year from a magician show and from the sale of our yearbook was to pay for the yearbook, our class banquet and graduation expenses. After about a year's work on the yearbook, members of the staffs, under the direction of Mrs. Ward, Mrs. Marble and Mr. Richmond, completed the 1955 edition of the Spotlight. And so, it is the end of our four years as a group. We received our diplomas on the night of June 27, but we will always hold memories of our busy times and happy moments spent together. 21 Florence Keating '55 « af.tr Will (Eestnment WE, the Class of 1955 in the County of Chenango and State of New York being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish and declare this our LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT, in manner following that is to say: Dick DeSalvo's ability to cram for Regents to Edgie Whittle...Elissa Sheets's snow shovel to Sandra Beckwith...Eugene Rapuzzi's wave to Mr. Walsh...Louzetta Whittaker's peroxide bangs to David Adams...Ronnie Martin's hopped-up Ford to Mike McEneny...Virginia Clements's reserved and demure temperament to Barbara Cooper...Paul Wright's kick-off toe to Carl Cowles...Pat Castaldy's perfect attendance to Elizabeth Hackett...Robert Roger's big feet to Michael Buckel...Mary Standish's English 3 book to Brandon Tracy... Every week during the summer he conducts the school band in a concert in Lafayette Park. During the fall, the band also marches and plays at all home football games. Currently the mem bers are raising money for their new uniforms by marching for the firemen and giving concerts at the W.R.C. Home. They also earned money last summer by winning a second prize at the Afton County Fair and a fifth prize at the Watkins Glen Firemen's Con- vention. MEMBERSHIP in the Senior Chorus totaled seventy this year. On December seven- teenth, the chorus presented its annual Christmas program. Margaret Bound accom- panied the group. From January to March, the members were very busy preparing music for the annual Susquenango Music Festival which was held at Oxford in April. Senior Chorus JUNIOR RED CROSS AND ADVISORS PEP BAND THE Pep Band is composed of a special group of band members selected by Mr. Parciany. They play for assemblies and basketball games. SCHOOL NOTES THE Junior Red Cross is a na- tional organization designed to give school children a chance to further the work of the Red Cross in its various activities at home and abroad. In connection with this, our local chapter, under the supervision of Mrs. Blanche Thorp and other faculty advisors, conducts an annual membership drive and fills boxes for disaster areas. This news is printed in a special section of the Oxford Reviews-Times. 42 JUNIOR HIGH CHORUS T UNIOR High School Chorus is open to any boy or girl in the seventh or eighth J grade who has an acceptable singing voice. Rehearsals are held once a week, and no credit is given. This year, the Junior Chorus members sang Christmas carols at the County Hospital in Preston, and caroled through the school halls. SAFETY PATROL MEMBERS of the Safety Patrol are volunteers from grades 5 and 6. The purpose of the Patrol is to protect the lives of the school children at the crosswalks. At least two representatives are se- lected each year for outstanding achievement and are given a trip, with all expenses paid, to Wash- ington, D. C. by the A.A.A. and the local P.T.A. THE Commercial Club is organ- ized under the direction of Miss Ruth Bull. It includes business students who are interested in find- ing out more about the commercial world. The members have had speakers and movies and frequently have gone on field trips in con- nection with their objective. A pin is awarded to new members each year and a bar is added to it for each year of membership. COMMERCIAL CLUB 43 THE Future Farmers of America is a national organization of boys taking voca- tional agriculture. The local club, under the direction of Mr. Vogelgsang, participates in judging, speaking and other competitive contests with various state groups. The combined F.F.A. groups of the state own and operate a camp near Crogan, New York, which consists of seventeen hundred acres, three lakes and buildings to house one hundred boys. The boys hold regular meetings, carry on social activities and plant from ten to fifteen thousand trees annually on neigh- boring farms. At the end of the school year, the senior group takes a trip to a place of their choice. A THE F.H.A. club is a group of girls that are interested in developing and improving their home- making skills. They have had several penny dances and bake sales to raise money for local charities and their own social activities. THE Audio-Visual Service Group is under the direction of Mr. Walsh. They hold periodic briefing sessions to introduce new members to the equipment and to acquaint all members with new equipment. The members carry projection equipment to and from classrooms and operate the machines whenever necessary. Some of the members have also done valuable cataloging for the depart- ment. 44 CIVIL DEFENSE THE Civil Defense group is composed of twenty volunteer students who are assigned to various posts throughout the school.
