Supervising Principal r 3, .l. W. IVICMULLEN To the Seniors: When the three young ladies asked me to write something for their yearbook, I asked them, g'What is your theme? They replied, Country Gardensf, For this subject I had an immediate interest for at an early age I was a gardener in a real Country Garden down beyond the Big Elk Creek, There, in addition to the vegetables and fruits, I remember a variety of flowers planted in good order. The urge to plant a garden and Watch it grow is as widespread as the soil itself. This urge is shared by all mankind- savage and civilized, ancient and modern, poor and rich. The occupation of gardening fits people of all ages, no one is too old or too young for it. Interest in it grows with knowledge and manifests a different charm at varying ages. From my study of literature, I recall that Tennyson calls Father Adam Hthe grand old gardenerwg and Shakespeare says, There are no ancient gentlemen but gardenersf, From history I learn that the Egyptians had irrigated gardens as early as 2,000 B.C. I have no doubt that your history teacher pointed out to you-especially the boys-the fact that in order to gratify the beautiful girl he took for a wife, Nebuchadnezzar built the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. To Amuhia, who had come from the Land of the Medes where there were hills and trees, these beautiful gardens were a breath of home. Much can be learned from gardens and gardening. A garden is a wonderful school. In it all the instructors teach by silent but interesting object lessons, and all the pupils 'clearn to do by doing. Cultivation of the garden gives physical benefit through the healthful outdoor exercise, and the exer- cise has the added value of being creative. A garden teaches regard for the rights of others, because one who has cared for a plant from its seedtime to maturity understands what ownership means. The gardener learns that success comes from work. In the good garden there is an orderliness which has brought forth the comment that gardening is the oldest of the arts. We in the Oxford Area High School have been ugardeningw with the Class of 1957 for twelve years. As we harvest our Ucropv at graduation, we shall be looking for big stalksi'-fine specimens of physi- cal fitness and full earedv with the knowledge that as we sow so shall we reap. Sow to reap an acceptable Personality, good Character, Initiative, Determination, Leadership and Reverence. Best wishes for much success in worthwhile things.
