., .,,...,..i T0 THE SENIGRS Our situation recently has been a moving one. We have moved into a beautiful, new school building, and you are moving toward graduation and all that goes with that achievement. We could conclude that we have been udrivin' on . It reminds me of the old fellow who was racing his horse on the snow. Having won and returned to the starting place, he remarked to the by-standers, We were drivin' on, line in each hand, whip in the other. It pleases me that you, the Class of 1954, are to be the first class graduated from this new high school building. As I have observed you, you deserve well this distinction. As you take your leave from us who have taught you, I should like to point up to you two ideals among the many that we live by in this great land of ours. One is, We hold that men have the ability to govern themselves. The second, We hold that the citizen must be informed. The ability of men to govern themselves and to participate in the making of decisions that concern themselves in all life situations has its completing part in the duty of the individual citizen to be informed on the matters committed to his judg- ment. Long ago the founders of a New England state declared that the good Education of Children is of singular behoof and benefit to any Commonwealth. Ever since the ideal of an informed citizenry has been the basic concept upon which our whole educational system has rested. The founders of our democracy, embarking on a mo- mentous experiment in government, were not sure the experiment would succeed, but they had no doubt that it would fail if opportunity were not provided for the edu- cation of all the boys and girls of all the people. . From very humble beginnings, for more than a century and a half, we have de- veloped our system of public schools, and rightly so, to the place where youn men and women go out with their diplomas from fine, large, and beautiful school buidings where they have had the advantage of improved educational opportunities. I congratulate you on graduation from the Qxford Area High School and extend to all of you my personal best wishes for much success in those things you do which are right and good for all of us. Keep drivin' on 5 line in each hand, whip in the other. I. W. MCMULLEN
