While the time we have attended the new school seems short, the experience has been one which will not be soon forgotten. For we have had an opportunity to complete our twelfth year in a new institution of higher learning which should inspire those who follow with an incentive to make the most of their school days. Graduates we shall soon be. This will mark the completion of twelve years of study. The time has come when we must move on to higher fields of education, or as some will do, pursue our chosen vocations and become active citizens in their community. As we each go our separate ways, our memory of school days at Oxford will go with us, for it was here that we received the training for becoming and assuming the duties of a good citizen in a country which needs the efforts of each to stay strong and free. NANCY DIEM Editor 5 WE DEIJICATE MARGARET P. HINDMAN Even those who haven't been fortunate enough to have Mrs. Hindman in class will long remember her as a true friend and ad- viser. Her understanding ways and very friendly disposition have made her respected and admired by all who know her. 4 GUR KERNEL C. FRANCIS COATES Mr. Coates' interest in our problems and his un- biased manner have been greatly appreciated. His principle that education should prepare us to face life, as well as his gentle satirical humor, have made im- pressions never to be forgotten. 5 ,J I. ,Q -1 NJA , Q4 1, . ,lj 1, LV, . , Xu ,px M F ,'2n F15 4 sf i-1. .- K . . ,V ' . . MCGOUGH Wle, the Oxford Area Board of Education, extend to the Class of 1954, our hear- liest congratulations and our very best wishes for success in the future. May you always feel that great honor and privilege has been yours to be the first class to receive your diploma within the walls of our fine new institution of learning. For this, the whole Oxford Area has striven long and arduously, to give to you and to all those who follow after you, the comfort and advantages you deserve. Play God bless you and guide you as you go your separate ways into whatever the future holds for you, 8 ., .,,...,..i T0 THE SENIGRS Our situation recently has been a moving one. We have moved into a beautiful, new school building, and you are moving toward graduation and all that goes with that achievement. We could conclude that we have been udrivin' on . It reminds me of the old fellow who was racing his horse on the snow. Having won and returned to the starting place, he remarked to the by-standers, We were drivin' on, line in each hand, whip in the other. It pleases me that you, the Class of 1954, are to be the first class graduated from this new high school building. As I have observed you, you deserve well this distinction. As you take your leave from us who have taught you, I should like to point up to you two ideals among the many that we live by in this great land of ours. One is, We hold that men have the ability to govern themselves. The second, We hold that the citizen must be informed. The ability of men to govern themselves and to participate in the making of decisions that concern themselves in all life situations has its completing part in the duty of the individual citizen to be informed on the matters committed to his judg- ment. Long ago the founders of a New England state declared that the good Education of Children is of singular behoof and benefit to any Commonwealth. Ever since the ideal of an informed citizenry has been the basic concept upon which our whole educational system has rested. The founders of our democracy, embarking on a mo- mentous experiment in government, were not sure the experiment would succeed, but they had no doubt that it would fail if opportunity were not provided for the edu- cation of all the boys and girls of all the people. . From very humble beginnings, for more than a century and a half, we have de- veloped our system of public schools, and rightly so, to the place where youn men and women go out with their diplomas from fine, large, and beautiful school buidings where they have had the advantage of improved educational opportunities. I congratulate you on graduation from the Qxford Area High School and extend to all of you my personal best wishes for much success in those things you do which are right and good for all of us. Keep drivin' on 5 line in each hand, whip in the other. I. W. MCMULLEN TO THE SEN IDRS You are the first Seniors to enter the new junior-senior high school building and the first class to graduate from this magnificent structure. You should be proud, as I am, that such a wonderful building has been constructed in the community. Let this be an incentive to each of you to build a fine character and to strive to become an outstanding citizen in the community of which you may become a part. As Cicero said, No one has lived a short life who has performed his duties with unblemished characterf, To all of you I wish the best that life offers. Sincerely I. M. THOMPSON Principal 10 FOREWORD To produce a Kernel of the people and events of the class of 1954 has been the aim of the staff. Into it we have put ourselves, our hopes, our joys, and our ideals with a feeling that this might be a worthy memento of our class. You alone can decide if we have ac- complished our purpose. Our only hope is that you may be able to derive as much enjoyment in reading it as the staff has had in producing it. If you do enjoy it, then the class of 1954 has been a success. 11 , 4 .,.. 2' .,.. . I P 'Y Nirs. Ethel R. Yerkes Nirs. Lila P. Xvilde Wir. This year we were delighted with the whole-hearted support given by the students to the A. A., and we sincerely hope next year will be as successful. 50 CHEERLEADERS lust as in years past, the '54 cheerleaders have kept up the morale of our O. A. H. S. teams. At all the soccer and basketball games they led Oxford students in the cheers. The squad, with Nancy Brown as their captain, is made up of four seniors and two juniors: NANCY BROWN, SR. MARI,YN LUPTON, SR. ERMA SLAUCH, SR. SHIRLEY BRUCE, IR. META BAILY, SR. CONNIE GOLT, IR. The girls did a good job this year, and they wish to thank all those who attended the games. The Seniors wish all the future O. A. H. S. cheerleaders the best of success. 51 VARSITY CLUB The Varsity Club is a very active club in Oxford Area lligh School. It is comprisecl ot all boys and girls who participate on the varsity teams. Nlr. Iames is our aclviser and through his helpful cooperation with the president, Gary Cummings, the club has been able to use various ways of raising moneyg for example, sponsoring a bake, selling Christmas carcls and selling tags. The most successful alliair was a dance. IDI?-l'l.dt'l'If. , . . . ciARY Cmmiwos IMI-e Prvmfefzl. . . . . . ROBERT BADGIER 1y't'HJ'lll't'l' ..., , . . NVe wish to congratulate these people for their time and effort spent during the past year. 55 VARSITY HQCKEY September brought forth sunny skies, hrisk air, and energetic girls who were anxious to get hold of a hockey stick once again. Our schedule was limited to five games. llowever, our girls managed to win two, tie one, and lose one out of these five. Our last game was canceled because of the early arrival of jack frost. Although we will lose eight out of the eleven players this year, we feel that the material on hand for next year will be good enough to produce an excellent team. 54 JUNIOR VARSITY HUCKEY Since the varsity team loses 8 of its 11 players this year, here are the stars of to- morrow. We know that they will be a good team, for when the last whistle blew, it ended a quite successful season for Oxford's little ll. With further practice and experience, this junior varsity team will become Ox- fordys finest varsity team. JO GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL The Girls' Basketball team started out with a bang this year by defeating the Alumni for the first time in five years. Even though the team was well organized and played a good game of basketball, they were defeated in the next five games. This year we will lose Nancy Brown fforwardj, Mazie Simons fforwardb, Marlyn Lupton fforwardj, Sue Shoun fforwardb, Gail Hodgson tguardb, Meta Baily fguardj and Shirley Neff fguardb. We wish the future varsity team much success, 56 GIRLS' JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL The V. team this year was macle up of many new members. They clicl very well and are good prospects for U. A. H. S. in the coming years. They won three of their games and lost two. Their experience this year will prove an asset to them in their forthcoming seasons. 57 VARSITY BASKETBALL Oxford had a schedule Of fifteen games this year, compiling a record of five wins and ten defeats. Many of the games were lost by a few points. This year six seniors will be leaving the team. We are sure that the up and coming Iunior Varsity players will fill their vacancies. Although there was only one letter man back this year, there were a lot of promising prospects out for the team. The Hornets played twelve games this season. 62 SGCCER This year the soccer team showed tremendous effort in all their games.
