It pleases me to know that you will graduate from one of the many public high schools that make up a segment of a vast educational enterprise that is unique in the world's history. It is the considered opinion of many that our system of free public schools, founded on the theories of our greatest pioneer statesmen-Washington, Franklin, and Jefferson-has been largely responsible for our enviable position among the nations of the earth. You are a fine class. You have helped substantially in giving to the entire school a wholesome quality of citizenship. You have made a good start in life. For this I commend you, your good parents, and your interested teachersg for what we do when we get our start marks our actions the rest of our lives. 1952 is a great year to graduate. You are graduating in the midst of what has been termed the greatest of all revolutions. It could well recall to our minds the beginning of Dickens famous novel on the French Revolution-11 Tale of Two Ci!1'e.r- It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was thehepoch otlincredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season ofdarkness, it was the spring 0 ope.-. In conclusion, I congratulate you again on your graduation, commend you for your fine qual- ities of character and the good beginning you have made in life. I extend to you my personal best wishes for much success tomorrow in those things that will help more people everywhere to live daily more satisfying lives to the end that it will be lille bex! of ffnzav and ilze ,reafon of Lzlghi. Sincerely J. W. MCMULLEN 4 J- J. FUREWORD We, the class of Nineteen Hundred and Fiftv-two have tried to select some of the acts from the program of our high school years. Since it would be im- possible for us to present all our activities in this small hook, we have chosen the most outstanding and important ones, hoping that our classmates will use it as a record to refresh memories of our happy school life and the people who made it so. T1112 Eorrous i 5 APPRECIATIUN The members of the KERNEL staff are deeply gra teiful for the encouragement and assistance rendered them in the pub- lication of this yearbook. In particular we wish to thank Mr. VV. McMullen, Nliss Betty Hawkins, Mm. S. To say good-by to teachers and friends And the times we loved the best. To say farewell to those sacred halls, Where we each our course have stated, To journey cautiously into the unknown, YVe've worked and studied and waited. But in the future we'll look back, And reminisce with fondest thought, At the fun we've had through the work we've done, We'll practice what we've been taught, YVe each must charter our own lifes course We, the Class of '52, But we'll never forget the friends we made, And the ties, that hold so true. Through the years other voices Our Alma Mater' will proudly sing, But the echo of that much loved tune, ln our hearts forever will ring. RUBY SLAUCH 57 CLA SS HISTGRY Friends, parents and teachers, 1 come not to praise the Class of 19523 1 come to record it, but it will be impossible to omit praise from the records of so worthy a class. As the history of any country may be divided into four periods-early settlement, expansion, invention and attainment-so may the history of our class lie divided into these tour periods. Un September tilith in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and forty-eight, we l,egan on a period of settlement. There assembled at the doors oftlxtord High a host ol' strangers. These strangers had been attracted by the great opportunities offered here for education. They canie frrm the smaller scheols surrounding Uxtord, all very eager for learning. As we look back upon our adventurous Freshman year, we remember the Fresh- man Party as THE event. Witli the traditional orange and black tor the decorative color scheme and the thrilling music of the Palace Royal Urchestra, we were successfully initiated to the social activities of our high school. Next on the agenda, we recall the eventful and educational trip to the Franklin Institute accompanied by Mr. Schlieder. Our year was topped with a big skating party highly enjoyed by all its participants. YVC shall always remember our most enjoyable trip to the Art hluseum with Miss Sentt in our Sophomore year. Another outstanding lieature of that year was the Sophomore llop with music provided by Tom Donahue. A successful skating party drew our tenth year to a close. The Iunior year brought forth our highly prized class rings. It was also the year ot the first formal dance for many of usfthe Iunior Prom. Once again we were for- tunate to secure Tom Donahue's music for the big event. The Research Club was elaborately decorated with paper llowers and streamers. With much anticipation, September 1951 found us assembled to enter upon the most important period of our history, that otatttainment. Realizing our need of worthy leaders we elected outstanding class ohficers and Kernel lfditors. Our Senior year brought new changes to Oxford lligh-the most radical being the shortened lunch hour. It was also the first year for the Varsity Club, a successful organization for the girls and boys who had earned at least one letter in any sport. Wye shall be proud to remember the able group who represented our school at the Nlodel Republican Nomination Convention assisted by Mr. Coates. And last but not least, we are happy to remember that the television set for O. 11. S. was pur- chased in our Senior Year. As the time for the Senior Play drew near we selected Hixlelody 1ones to show our talent. An able cast represented us, and the event proved a most successful Senior Play. Uur Yvashington Trip is over and our examinations are completed. For some time we have looked forward to this time with joy, but now it brings a thought that we have not only attained our goal but also come to the end of all good times at Oxford High. Graduates we shall soon be. The result of this tedious labor glistens on our brows. But tomorrow some college professor or business executive will push us back again into the ranks. Iuniors, Sophomores, Freshmen, we sincerely sympathize with you in your loss. The blue and ivory tades from your sight, you lose worthy modelsestately Seniors- the Class of 1952. SIGNED AND SEALED BY TIIE CLASS or '52 40 CLASS PROPHECY Wlhen, in about ten years-1962, Skimming through this book brings back memories to you, Let your eyes linger on this page and recall YOUR plans for the futurefdid they work out at all? There are from our class efficient stenographers, they include .Vlargaret Burke, Alary Ann Vaughn, Sara Dawson, Shirley Krauss, and never exclude Thomasine Donnelly, Verna Smith, Shirley Fischell and Nlary Fite, For theirs was a goal worthy of keeping in sight. Willard Nocho and Donald White both had in mind A future in which they would operate a business of some kind. As a Truck driver, Tommy Yvright is trying his hand, XVhile YVilliam Edwards, Richard Lindsey and Wayne Clendenin are busy plowing the Billy Blackburn also is interested in raising the food we eat Unless he, along with the others, his country's service must meet. But Walter Root and Dave Wheeler aren't waiting for the draft board to call- 'l'hey'll enter the service sometime before fall. Anne Hickman, along with Florence Frampton and Josephine Shields, llas entered and is doing tine in the Nursing Field. And as George Nlason flies to Aloscow to practice Diechanical Engineering, Doris Sheline, the Airline hostess, helps him through this flight he's been fearing. In a class of this size there's a general rule That a few students will earn their bread and butter by teaching school. Our class is no different, so we say. No! for those who will try it are Jo Ann Harold, Shirley Martin and Iris Grey. Fred Cheek is working in a speed shop of some kind. But Glenn Teeter says that him, in a place like that, we'll never find. For in the wide open spaces we can see his company who Builds roads and repairs them 'till they look like new. As telephone operators two positions have been filled by Bertha Moore and Nellie Gill. So, if it's mushrooms you want and you're not in town, Ask them to connect you with Delmar or Francis Brown. Enjoying the sun at Aliami Beach, we can find Ann Aliller, .Wlildred Nloroney and Doris Snavely any old time. When asked what they do to put in time, they replied, YVork as secretaries to big executives, you know, just on the side. To kill time and review old familiar faces, Alotor out to llialeah and join Gus Rhodes at the races. Or enjoy the thrills and sights of Florida with Alilton Aiorang l'le'll show you around like nobody can. James Wilson we see climbing a high telephone pole. lle's a wonderful electrician, so we've been told. Teddy Hamilton's firm of Electric Engineering, in which he plays an important role, Furnishes the material that James places on each tall pole. Norman Sumner in physics we hear is quite skilled, And a position with the Ajax Atomico Limited he has successfully tilled. Also we see the beautiful drawings of Ruth Childs who takes part In a company that deals strictly with the finer things in art. If your 1952 model car is worn out and you're ready to sell, Drop in to see Alillard Bidwell. If he won't give vou vour price, there's just one thing to do land. Take it to Farmier's or 'l'aylor's place of employmente-they're mechanics-theynll tix it for you. Let's see what Paul AlcDowell is doing-well, do declare, lie's made his dreams come true as a professional football player. And Violette Ferguson is studying music at college. Wonder what she'll do with all that knowledge? Let's not overlook one definite aim Ol' all females-to change their last names. 'lien girls in our class will vouch that it's true, So keep on reading and they,ll be named lor you. Lynn llauber, Charlotte Browning, Dorothy llarper and Marie McNeill Pat Smith, Peggy llarold, Connie Wingate and Mary Ann McFann Janet Nlelrath, Alice Jackson. And behold, Nick Penn Yvants a wife and a family of eight or ten. Paul Propst is another businessman from our crowd, And one of whom we can all be proud. While Dave Franklin has found his interest, of course, In a college education and then the Air Force. If, after struggling through these ten years, your hair looks like a mop. just step in Aiaryana Caldwell's or Doris O'Connor's beauty shop. Or, if along the way, stumbling has caused you to fall, Remed it by seeing Sandra Epsteinfshe's practicing law. Well, tliiiere it is down in black and white, So let what you've said guide you like a beacon light. And to all in this wonderful class of 1952. May God bless and keep you-whatever you do. 41 SARA DAWSON wr .flofl Papuvar M. XYAUGIIN and D -FRANKLIN dM 910b,-4 Ifflff Dam'L'1'.r S. KRAUSS and F. Cul-:ER Z , - ... 11 Q. Leib, each member was assigned to a station, to which he reported a few minutes before the bell between every class. Again this year, the system of alternating patrols was tried and found to be very successful. Two patrols were appointed, one of girls and one of boys. This gives each patrol a break and eliminates the monotony. The Hall Patrol of the Class of '52 wishes all future members the best of luck. 68 . w. ,v0 ' Art. ., Sports. . . Finance lficlitor. .
