T reamurer RALPH I. GRIER OXFORD SCHOOL BOARD Congratulations to the Class of '51 and every good wish for your success. If what shines afar so grand Turns to nothing in your hand, On again! the virtue lies In the struggle, not the prize. 5 TO THE SENIGRS Graduation is just around the corner-eleven years and seven months down and two months to go. I, personally, and on behalf of your other teachers, extend to you hearty congratulations. I hope this yearbook will please all of you and that in future years it will be a kind of fairy bridge over which your dreams may glide to that happy land of youth gleaming on the other side. It pleases me to see you so calm in these uncertain days. I think often, as do you, of that one from your class who enlisted in the navy to serve his country. If you have further schooling in mind get to it now. The light of knowledge is easily extinguished and diHicult to rekindle. You have lived through great events which are shaping the world of tomorrow. The first 50 years of this century witnessed the death of more persons in warfare than all of the other centuries of man's recorded experience. The instruments of warfare are now so perfected that there is the sobering influence that the next war could be the last. Men must learn to live together and to get along with each other. May I recall to you what General McArthur said to the Congress on April 19 about war? I have long advocated its complete abolition, as its very destructiveness on both friend and foe has rendered it useless as a means of settling international disputes. If mankind will develop a way of cooperation between nations, the tragedy of war can be avoided. A richer life will be had by many. Medical science will protect your health so that you will live much longer. Inventions will make living easier and more enjoyable. Machines will relieve men and women of much drudgery. Housing will be improved. Art, music, literature, and recreation will be cultivated. The atomic age may well be that age of which men have dreamed for centuries. I. W. MCMULLEN 4 FUREWORD We, the class of Nineteen Hundred and F ifty-one, have tried to present the activities of our school year in a nutshell. We have chosen the most interesting and out-standing events of the year, hop- ing that We might enable our classmates to remember our school as we attended it. THE EDITORS 5 APPRECIATION. Behind us, the cherished years we've spent, The moments so sweet we surrender, The happy days, the friends we've made, All for the unknown splendor. We know the way will be weary, For those of us who aspire To find our star, to reach new goals, To set the standards higher. We go with hearts that are loyal and true To the ideals these years we've been taught 3 We go from our loved ones, their tender care To the fray, unknown, unfought. These thoughts are sad, and yet must be The inner, urging cry, That drives and says, Go on. Go on, Our purpose must not die. Let each one take unto himself. The message of this day, To begin-not end, what each intends, To succeed-the rightful way. ALICE WICHHART 56 CLASS HISTCRY Our twelve years of gaining knowledge have terminated. Some of us will go onto seek further education, and others will start now to make places for themselves in the world. During our last four years of work and fellowship some names have disappeared from the roll while new ones have been added. We can remember vividly the many happenings which took place over this period of time. In our Freshman year, some of our classmates took part in Youth Day activities around the town. We had fun on a hayride and a skating party at Avondale, but the big event of the year was the Freshman Party. Bill Short supplied the music for this affair for which the traditional Hallowe'en decorations were used. Our trip to Franklin Institute with Mrs. Barr provided both education and fun. The first real accomplishment during the Sophomore year, other than the usual studies was the Sophomore Hop. Christmas festivities brought about the theme for the decorations and the Criterions,' furnished the dance music. The skating party at the then new Merryland roller rink was a delightful success. This year many of us had the opportunity to attend our first formal, the Snowball. Cur trip to Philadel- phia this year was with Miss Senftg our destination, the Art Museum. As Iuniors we came into the spotlight 5 for our sports participants become varsity material, and we all flashed around our new class rings. We celebrated St. Patrick's Day by giving a Turnabout Dance. The long-awaited spring brought with it the excitement of the Iunior Prom. Silver and blue decorations to look at, cake and punch to eat, Tom Donahue's orchestra to dance to-all made it a perfect night for us. This year again we had a skating party at the Merryland rink. In our Senior year we did something unprecedented-we held a Hobo Hop, which was a howling success. Most of our last semester was spent working on the yearbook and practising for the Senior play, Mother Is a F reshmanf' Like many former classes, we had a wonderful time in Washington. After we got over all our final exams, we came into the limelight in the community as we held our Baccalaureate services, our Class Night program and Commencement exercises. To many of us this seems like the end of learning and good time. We are told by people much older and wiser than we that this is only the beginning of our life out in the world. We hope that each member of our class will live, act and work in such a way that he will prove to the world that Oxford is a wonderful place to live. 57 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT EDNA ADAMS, leave my place on the newspaper staff to Mary Ann Vaughn. Besides discovering that the busy waitresses are Dorothy Coomes, Margaret McClain and Grace Reyburn, they find that among them they know quite a bit about how the class of '51 is getting along. Mary Brubaker is combining marriage with a career of teaching music in a school in Philadelphia. Sam Sweeney is also successful along this line 5 his mellow voice and his smooth dance band, of which lim Lupton is featured trumpet soloist, are gaining tremendous popularity. A surprising thing is the number of secretaries which the class produced. The office force of the DuPont corporation includes the following girls: Edna Adams, Frances Brown, Mary Evans, Sally Hover and Mary Morrison. Hazel McCoury and Iennie McCoury and Iean Nocho are affiliated with local firms. Lois Thomas is doing secretarial work at the Pennsylvania Military College. Liz Mason is working her way up in the People's Bank. Sam Coates has estab- lished himself a reputation as a fine draftsman in New York and Bob Sumner is travel- ing over the United States as an engineer. Heath Warden is editor of a flourishing local newspaper, Heathie's Herald. Robert Pierson and Bob Todd are his crack reporters, and Barbara Davis and Ieanne Reynolds are Heath's office girls. Chester County is being supplied with mushrooms grown by Buddy Ward, Wilmer McDowell, and Harold Broomell. These mushrooms are delivered by Harmon Weaver, Clem Kent and Ollie Hagy, who are veteran truck drivers. Barry Eshelman is at the wheel of a mail truck and Herrell Curry is hauling milk throughout this part of the country. Those who entered the nursing field are Nancy Adams, Mary Greer, Ianet Mc- Coury, Iane Phillips and Jean Wharton. The outcome of the high school engagements was very favorable. Arlene Broom- all, Iuanita Smith, and Iane Ewell, are now res ectively, Mrs. William Moll, Mrs. Robert Dunfee, and Mrs. Raymond Broomell. Aqso enjoying happy married lives are Teddy Cochran, Alma Shields, Wanda Stetler, and Alice Wichhart. There is uite a representation of our class serving Uncle Sam. Frank Bowman is a Marine pilot. Buzz Dorety, Iessie Dolinger, Iim Willis, and Skip Gray have also joined him in his search for adventure. Bob Whiteside, Kelcie Grey, Philip Hayes, and Bill Purcell are sailing the seven seas in the navy. Bob Walters graduated from West Point with high honors and now has a high position in the Army. We also have a few patriotic girls in the class of '51. Dorothy Frampton, Frances McCall, and Ruth Ann Sheline are Lady Leathernecksf' In the field of art, Elma Iaynes and Ierry Maule have made names for themselves as commercial artists. Doris Maxwell is drawing advertisements for the famous dress designer, Dorothy Duncan. Head ty ist in Miss Duncan's firm is Iane Maley and Doris Kirk is one of her most efficientlbookkeepers. Anna Greenway owns an ultra-modern beauty salon and employs Mildred Bard, Florence Fischel, and Sara Iones. Richie Farmer is at the head of a big chain store concern. Branch managers are Bob Cleaver and Harold Phillips. Last but far from least, Fred McMichael and Harold Roney, are using their knowledge acquired through F.F.A. work to make themselves the best farmers around. When all is said and done, we have done ourselves roud and we will continue to d P o so. 42 UNUL IT C145 3,15 GX fwig 6 fY'm ' i. Those elected were Richard Farmer, president, Orville Iones, vice president, Mary Evans, secretary, and Elizabeth Mason, treasurer. Although the A.A. subscriptions were low this year, the organization had a very eventful year. They sponsored three dances, all of which were a great success.
