MEMORIES That's when some girls end up taking showers with their clothes on - with a little help from their friends. That's when the powder and perfume fights begin, when lots of loud chatter, laughing and hugging each other, and horsing around goes on. And then there are the countless times everyone just sits around and Shoots the bull . Before a game the team usually tries to get psyched. Every player has made jokes about the opposing team, built up friends confidence, and bragged about how many homeruns, goals, or baskets they're going to make. These are my team-mates. This is our room -- ours until we have played our last game of our last year at Oxbow. Then we will clean out our things for the last time and pass our traditions and memories to the next group of girls who will make up another team, who will cry, joke, fight, get psyched, and laugh together - IN THIS ROOM. We have a very hard examination to go through and if you don't make ityou can go into tenth grade and have a year extra. We don't have many strict rules in Danish schools. The students are ex- pected to be able to take care of them- selves and their time. lt says in the law that the teachers are only supposed to teach to students that want to be taught. lf a student does not show up to a class the parents are not called. lf it happens too often the teacher tries to find out if the student is not comfort- able in the class. They try to solve the problem but after a couple of weeks without the student showing up they have to give detention. We are given a lot of freedom in school in Denmark. From when you start in first grade until ninth grade you are given more and more freedom each year. ln a lot of classes the teachers dis- cuss with the students what they want to learn and how they want to learn it. They are often on the same treatment level as the teachers. school is for the ages of 5 to 11 ondary school is for the ages 16. Sixth form college is for the 16 and up. From the ages of 11 we study all subjects. Then at choose 9 subjects to study for 2 At the end of the 2 years we have called O levels which are similar to the G.E.D. At 16 you may leave school to find a job or you can continue your education to gain more qualifications, or in hopes of going to University. School discipline is a lot more se- vere. The boys get cane and the girls get a ruler across the hand or suspen- sion. Before you enter a classroom you have to stand outside the door in a straight line until the teacher tells you to go in then you stand behind your chair of 14 Astrid Egerod excha to Slt students and teachers. nge en can the Joanne Hardy 5 x ! There have been times that each one of them has thought about giving up. However, as they analyzed and care- fully examined the situation, they didn't quit. They knew that they had set their minds to a goal and they were hop- ing to finish their task. lt is important that we all recognize this as an impor- tant part of our lives. Each of us has been faced with diffi- cult tasks at school, at home or at work. We will continue to be faced with difficult tasks as we grow. The real test of how we are judged as human beings is how we handle Sue Ming - Guidance . .M Kirby Nickels - Humanities these decisions. Do we rationalize and find several reasons why we shouldn't do them? Do we put off per- forming the task and at the last minute complain that we don't have the time? Or do we face the issue head on, deal with it and perform to the best of our ability and complete what we began? The decision, in the final analysis, is yours. Only you know whether you really wanted to do something or whether you just did it to please someone. I emphasize this point since l know each of you wants to succeed in whatev- er you do. Successful peo- ple do not quit! Successful people don't know the meaning of the word quit They know that one never gives up if one is going to achieve. So, the choice is yours. lf you want to succeed, and you know your goal- NEV- ER QUIT! May success be yours in your future life. He was a happy-go- lucky type of person who always loved a good joke. You could ask him any sports question and he almost always knew the answer - some people say that he was a sports dictionary. He was a good student and athlete. He participated in the making of ln- terim, the art sculpture hanging in Ox- bow's front lobby. He was also a lot of help to the 1982 Oxbow yearbook staff. Robbie was active. He was an excep- tionally good fencer, and a valuable member of the cross country team. He was also involved in the gymnastics program. Outside of school Robbie enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, playing DSD and having a good time with friends. We all miss him a lot. His sudden death has left an empty space in the hearts of all who knew him. Our mem- ories ofthe time we spent with him will live on with each of us for ever. 62 Getting plastered!! This yearls Haunted House proved to be scarier and more full of frightening friends than the years be- fore. , This year's Haunted House had something extra - live animated onsters from some unexplored Q i s f W 42, df if QV 5 1 H ,, JY' X? '7 .A plane of eerieness transformed with the aid of paper mache, chicken wire, and strangely garbed in flourescent paint. On the night before Halloween, they all marched out and crept into their new earthly abodes in the horse barn. Their intentions were clear - to scare the wits out of anyone who dared to venture into the dark barn. Any fools who dared to accept the challenge were faced with a continous row of posts in the ground with menac- ing looking lamps of clay leading to the barn. Before entering, they had to pay a small fee to the door openers who would rather think, I wonder if he'll make it through with a snicker than stop the fool before it is too late. However, in some cases of much younger participants, discretion had to be enforced. For those who had already made the commitment, it was too late to turn back. As the door was slammed on their backs, they were faced with a long dark passage. As they would muster up the courage to walk onward, a giant white creature named fly would make them regret they had come. After the fear had passed another menace loomed ahead - a large fanged creature which would jump out and expose it's bright white teet nd bl' ck mouth. We would like to thank the following people who helped us out when we needed it, even though they're tech- EDlTOR'S NCJTE nically not yearbook staff members: Tena Davidson, Laura Fenner, Tammy Sarazin, Bethanne Wright, Rose Oliver, Matt Sargent, Christina Thurston, Tom Bouffard, Robert Gaiser, Tom Rath- burn, and Mrs. Balch. and any one else who we have neglected to list here. Your help was greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank all the students and staff members who put up with all of the lost negatives, write ups, pictures 1 l l 1 l I etc . . . l ln closing we would like to thank Mal Hadley and Mr. Lavin our advisors, Mr. Rothenberg, and our company rep Marty Allen. Without the help and sup-5 port of these people, this yearbook: would not have been possible. Thank! you.
